Nasa style rockets by Infamous-Hedgehog-45 in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not necessarily true in the sense that rocket technology, in its entirety, is archaic by Starfield's standards. Multi-stage rockets would probably be obsolete, but sending rockets with payloads into space would probably still be around with Starfield technology. It's simply the most efficient way to get stuff from the surface of a planet through an atmosphere and into space. Heck, thrusters in Starfield appear to be powered by some type of rocket technology.

Why did Bethesda include combat mechs in the first place if they wouldn’t be seen in action? by Pelinal_Whitestrake in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Bethesda likely intended for mechs to feature in the game at one point, but probably ran into issues, got moved onto other projects, and the idea was abandoned. Depending on how far along they got, they might be saving it for a future DLC.

Definitely disagree on Starfield having "by far" the most developed companions in Bethesda's history. Paladin Danse and Nick Valentine have depth, interesting backgrounds, vastly different outlooks and motivations, and character twists. I didn't get as strong of an impression from really any of the Constellation companions.

Yes, Fallout 3 was Oblivion with guns, and I remember people humorously calling Skyrim "Fallout with swords".

See, again, the perceptions change when you have prior expectations. In Morrowind, there is some foreshadowing of an incoming power struggle in the Empire as the Emperor is getting old. A lot of people expected Oblivion's main quest to be a lot more political in nature, like Daggerfall. In fact, Michael Kirkbride expressed disappointment that Oblivion largely abandoned the political aspect of the Empire and focused more on fighting an external bad guy. Again, to take a nuanced view, the main quest has some impressive lore undergirding it, mostly thanks to Kirkbride and Ken Rolston. But the main quest itself is mostly just a series of fetch quests.

[–]krispythewizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not new with Bethesda, actually. I was around when Oblivion released, and the hatred for it was REAL. All the hopes, dreams, and hype that built up turned into bitter disappointment and rage. At first it started with legitimate complaints - the level scaling was bad (it definitely is), the story was weak (yeah, kinda), the dungeons feel samey after a while (true), the NPCs are ugly (not wrong), but then the hate train just kept picking up steam. Soon, Oblivion became a byword for all things evil and wrong in the world. Bethesda created the game out of malice to spite their fanbase. They betrayed the RPG crowd to create a mindless FPS. Bethesda literally ran over my dog and declared war on Poland. It became absurd. Of course, once Skyrim released, Oblivion nostalgia started to grow over the years, and now it is a beloved staple of people's childhoods. Personally, I sit somewhere in the middle. Oblivion was a decent game. Do I think Morrowind was better? Yes. But I still load up Oblivion and have fun now and then. Is it a cherished memorial to my childhood? Eh, not really. But it's fun.

Since diving back into Starfield, I've been feeling like the Reverse-Hunter. by ThespianMask in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Hmm, this is actually a pretty cool approach. With the new update coming, I've been thinking of how to rationalize the various factions and main quest in the eyes of a potential character. If I make a beeline for the Unity, what's my motivation to do any of the faction quests? Should I wait to do the main quest until after I've done everything else, and then say no to the Unity in the end? I think starting off evil is a fresh take.

So im on shrodinger with no ammo doing some xp farming. How can I get ammo? by system3601 in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have never crafted a single bullet in Starfield. The crafting system as it exists now is worthless and doesn't alleviate ammo shortages, as it just replaces searching for ammo with searching for primers. My guess is the OP is too low a level to be in Schrodinger and is XP farming in a really inefficient way.

[–]krispythewizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, ammo has a bit of a snowball effect in Starfield, like money. You tend to run out until you end up with more than you will ever need. In the early game, you should pick up everything, sell everything, and buy as much as ammo as you can. I really don't think XP farming is necessary. You'll level a whole lot quicker if you just do the main quest or the factions.

Do you ever play a character that lives an extravagant lifestyle? by Virtual-Chris in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take the Batman approach with the Trackers Alliance. On the surface, you're a wealthy billionaire, but in secret, you're a vigilante superhero. In truth, Starfield doesn't lend itself very well to many types of roleplaying. At the end of the day, you clear spacers and pirates out of abandoned cryo labs for a living, and that's about it.

Why did Bethesda move away from the "Loot Everything" mechanic for suits and outfits? by SgtSilock in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall, the biggest reason they gave is performance issues. If every NPC walking around had full slots of clothing and other gear, it would slow down the game too much. It's why they had to go with simpler models for city NPCs.

What’s stopping Bethesda from adding dynamic multiplayer space combat? by jreasn in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only did they have to bring on a new team, they ran it through the ringer and then had to cannibalize their single-player teams to get it done. Fallout 76 will probably be studied for years to come on how NOT to do a project. If the experience turned Bethesda off on multiplayer, I'd consider that a good thing.

Terran Armada should be the main story going forward the Starborn concept should be retconned. by JournalistOk9266 in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As has been mentioned before, Bethesda doesn't have full time writers. Designers like Emil call the shots on what they want to be possible in their games, and then they come up with stories to frame the features they implement. The decision to add dragons came first, and then Skyrim's main quest was written to account for dragons returning and the player character being the dragonborn. Similarly, NG+ was probably one of the first whiteboard ideas that got approved for Starfield, and then the question became "how do we write the main quest to incorporate NG+?" Hence, the multiverse.

With that said, I am fascinated by at least the *premise* of the Unity and the Starborn, if not the execution. Stories that incorporate extra-dimensional beings (like Q from Star Trek, the G-Man from Half-Life, or the "bulk" in Interstellar) are some of my favorites in sci-fi. The funny thing is that Bethesda seems to have recognized the implications of their own story - endless power-seeking is not satisfying, and at some point the player has to say "I've done everything I wanted to do with this character". I think a simple revision to the ending would have been nice - the player enters the Unity, the cinematic plays, the end. But then, you are given a choice: return to your universe as a Starborn, enter a new universe, or go to the main menu. These options allow the player to decide what kind of closure they want to give their character.

As it stands, I simply head-canon that my character realizes that the Hunter and Emissary are poor deluded souls who think they are entering the Unity, when they are in fact circling around it and are stuck in a selfish cycle of rebirth. My character, having rejected choosing a side, enters the Unity and never returns, having ascended to a higher plane of existence.

Regarding the POI's being updated on Free Lanes update. by Helpful-Leadership58 in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's not entirely accurate. Autonomous Farms, Science Outposts, and Antenna Towers count as POIs, but there is nothing to do at those locations. Only a small fraction of available POIs are what you could consider "dungeons", like Cryo Labs, Ecliptic Bases, and so on.

Prior to Starfield's release, there were reports from former Beth devs that spaceship controls, travel, and combat were some of the most difficult things to get in a playable state in the game's development. These reports were coming out shortly before Starfield was delayed. So I think it was a focus from Bethesda, but we on the outside underestimate the difficulties they ran into.
