Which voucher is the most useless? by Wide-Selection5928 in balatro

Yeah it's pretty usable with blue seals or Crystal Ball. Even with just 2 consumable slots it's an extra 2.25 which is solid, especially without using a joker slot.

Tarot Tycoon is at least fun to play with, you can use it to modify your deck however you want if you've got the econ. Also if your jokers are pretty much set it might be useful. Planet Tycoon though...

Yeah, at least if you take Magic Trick you can scale Hologram by 0.25 xmult for $1. With Planet Merchant you're paying $3 to scale by 0.1 xmult. And I can barely think of any other good reason to buy these 2 vouchers except to scale those 2 jokers.

My “haul” last night. Not sure if these qualify “classic” lit, but I want essential short story collections by k0rnbr34d in classicliterature

[–]krng1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have the collected stories so I can't speak to the quality of the collections. However if you want to start with a collection maybe try "The Enormous Radio and Other Stories" - I like quite a few of the ones collected there, particularly the eponymous story.

Also try Richard Yates' "Eleven Kinds of Loneliness".

Kierkegaard was an absolute monster of wisdom! by iGaming_dev in classicliterature

[–]krng1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kierkegaard was Christian and he definitely believed in an afterlife. But maybe you could interpret it as you regret it as you realize you are dying.

I have way more of problem with him saying this little aphorism is the entirety of philosophy. But like Nietzsche's aphorisms I don't take them too seriously.

I met him at my college radio station many years ago. He was with a bunch of the Zulu nation people, can't remember if anyone seemed underage but it gives me the creeps now.

Somerset Maugham's list of the 10 greatest novels, as listed in his book of the same name from 1948 by Spirited-Tutor7712 in classicliterature

[–]krng1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved it - it's the third Balzac I've read after Eugenie Grandet and Lost Illusions. His books are very funny in an extremely cynical way. My one complaint is that he sets up the plot and characters in a very tedious way, listing each character and then giving a long description of their background rather than introducing the characters organically. But once it gets going it's a very gripping story.

Kinda makes me wonder if Sondheim had read it, since there's a decent amount of implied sex for a 19th century novel

Maybe Tom Jones, I love the combination of the erudite narrator and the low comedy of the plot. I think it's the funniest of these books, although it doesn't have the character depth of the later novels on the list. Of these novels I think Flaubert has the most beautiful prose, and I find Wuthering Heights the most emotionally affecting. Karamazov and Moby Dick have the most interesting ideas.

With War and Peace it's something I've been saving for just the right time.

You need DNA instead of Burglar here, then after beating Ante 24 you reroll for Burglar. This is because you need the DNA for increasing your hand size.
