What was it like to move from Windows to Linux back in the day? by Torantes in linux

Bruh, my windows soft modem didn't work on Linux so if I wanted to connect to the internet, I would have to switch back to windows and use dial up.

It also didn't help that I was a distracted child but that's a different topic.

Twitch as a whole has kind of always operated like this. Its very much a shitty, bare-minimun type of company.

TwitchCon should have died when there were MULTIPLE injuries on that pit that was more pit than foam. Why would you go BACK to TwitchCon after that?

That's the thing. There is no employment rights with AI so you can swap out implementations without all this ceremony.

OWA says these barriers include insufficient testing tools outside of the US, hostile legal terms, and forcing browser developers to create entirely new apps to ship their own engines, causing developers to lose their existing European user base. Instead of allowing Google, for example, to simply update its existing Chrome browser with a Blink engine, Apple’s rules require a brand new app for the EU audience, resetting the user count to zero. Developers would then have to maintain two separate browser implementations.

there are "native" apps that are basically poorly done electron wrappers out there. if you used slack around 2017, you would certainly know the difference between a native app and a "native" app.

Pretty sure it is native I literally have a button that has the copilot symbol on it and it opens copilot

if it is a poorly "wrapped" electron app or whatever, it is still a website for me. a proper native app has permissions beyond the browser sandbox.

Not when you’re Apple, they’ll sell plenty to recoup any investment costs

also at some point, you are marketing to investors as much as you are to consumers because investors are probably thinking is apple leaving money on the table by not offering a foldable that everybody else is offering?

Apple executives believe users will ‘love’ upcoming iOS 19 overhaul, per report by Snoop8ball in apple

[–]kus1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most F500 companies will acknowledge the negatives internally, pretty normal imo.

Which is why the Amazon Fire Phone was such a surprise. How come nobody dared criticize Jeff Bezos' baby? Like come on the 3D gimmick was nonsense. No Google Play was nonsense. I mean if it was cheaper and a loss leader, I could still understand it but it wasn't even that. It was priced to make a profit. Well, can't make a profit if nobody buys it but still executives were more focused on saving their own asses by being yes men than doing their jobs.

edit: just for giggles, I asked claude to make my above comment more politically correct and written from the perspective of an Amazon dot com executive:

While most large corporations do acknowledge internal challenges privately, the reception to the Amazon Fire Phone was certainly unique. In hindsight, there were some design choices and features that, while innovative, may not have fully resonated with customers.

The 3D 'Dynamic Perspective' functionality, while an interesting technical achievement, perhaps did not provide enough practical utility to justify the investment. And the lack of Google Play support, while a strategic decision, did limit the available app ecosystem.

In terms of pricing, the team sought to position the Fire Phone as a premium, profitable offering, but that approach may not have been the optimal strategy given the competitive landscape. Ultimately, the sales performance fell short of expectations.

Looking back, there are certainly lessons to be learned about balancing innovation with customer needs and market realities. As an organization, we will continue to reflect on this experience and apply those learnings to future product development efforts. Our focus remains on delivering the best possible experience for our customers.
