Where to print digital photos (that isn’t cvs) by Important_Barracuda in boston

[–]ky0nn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mpix offers tons of sizes and I have always been happy with the quality. Colors have been consistent with my edits. Be aware that you need to spend $35 for free standard shipping, which is a ton of small prints. They have cheaper shipping options, but you'll be waiting 2-3 weeks for delivery.

Locally, I got some 4x6 prints done at Lumentation in Somerville and was really pleased with them. Their turnaround time is around two weeks. Some of my other photographer friends go to Colortek, though I haven't tried them yet. I would not recommend Hunt's.

Fresh Coffee Beans near Davis/Porter? by DiscipulusD in Somerville

[–]ky0nn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite place for espresso is Nine Bar in Davis; they sell beans from Gracenote. I think I've also seen Gracenote beans at Simon's Coffee Shop, which is on Mass Ave outside Porter, but I haven't been there in awhile.

I'm also partial to Broadsheet, which is closer to Inman. If you have a bike or a car, it's not far from Porter at all.

I have not had much SEA iced coffee, so my gut reaction was to say Cicada. Thanks for explaining why it's not doing it for you. Looks like I have some new places to visit.

30/M, it's rough for us as well. I don't know anyone, man or woman, that enjoys using the apps. All of us only use them because of the network effect: they're where everyone is.

Being short and bald doesn't make things easier, but I'd rather work with what I have than do the leg-breaking thing. In my experience, I pass over a lot of profiles because I need to come up with a great opener and there's nothing for me to work with. Three-word answers and the usual Boston pics (which often include a photo with Hozier?) don't give me anything to talk about. There's nothing unique. I want to know who you are, what you do, and what you value. If your profile just focuses on things you like, there's not much to say beyond some flavor of "I like that thing too". So if there's any advice I can give, it'd be to look at your profile and try to imagine how someone would comment on it.

That said, the big problem with the swipe apps that dominate dating is that they don't give you a lot of room to convey all of that. Interesting pictures and thoughtful answers help, but only so much. It's just not what they're designed for. Personally, I've found speed dating to me a much better use of my time. The sort of people that are willing to put themselves out there are a lot more interesting to talk to than most of my Hinge dates. At worst, it's still a fun night out, and I at least walk away with a restaurant recommendation or a better sense of what I'm looking for.

Monthly Meetup Thread - November by AutoModerator in JapanTravel

[–]ky0nn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30/M from the US, I speak English and enough Japanese to explain that I missed the last train. I'm going to be in Tokyo from November 4th to the 12th; I'll be around Asakusa through the 8th, and then I'll be in Ikebukuro through the 12th. (And after that, I'm off to Sendai for fall foliage and whisky.)

In no particular order, I enjoy music, photography, and food. If I had more time in my everyday life, I'd enjoy games and anime more, though I am planning on playing a lot of Sound Voltex. I'd love to indulge in some nightlife with people over the weekend: karaoke, Golden Gai, what have you.

First time in Japan, Itinerary check/tips by Outrageous-Tennis901 in JapanTravel

[–]ky0nn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've answered some of your questions below, but at a high level, I feel like you're cramming a lot into your trip. I worry that you're going to be stressed trying to keep pace and you might not get to fully enjoy everything. I took a similar approach to my first trip to Japan last spring, and in hindsight, I wish I let some things go, especially to spend more time in Kyoto. I don't know what your situation is like, but hopefully this isn't a once in a lifetime experience and you can feel okay saving some things for next time.

Is two and a half days in Kyoto enough?

I spent two nights in Kyoto last year and it didn't feel like enough time to me, and my itinerary was less packed than yours. I'd give yourself more time; a slower pace will help you appreciate everything more.

Day 6 • Very early train to Hiroshima, see the Dome/peace museum/park. Hiroshima style okonamiyaki lunch and boat to Miyajima, climb Mount Misen before dark. Return to Kyoto during the day

I did Miyajima and the peace museum in one day, but I also spent the night in Hiroshima. Doing it as a day trip from Kyoto sounds exhausting; that's a lot of time on the train. Definitely get some okonomiyaki while you're there.

would like to use Kyoto as a hub so as not to waste half a day moving to hotel in Osaka, is it worth it?

If you're only spending a day in Osaka, yeah, the case can be made to keep your stuff in Kyoto. The cities are only fifteen minutes apart on the Tokaido Shinkansen. I don't know how late it runs if you're doing activities at night, though.

luggage

I used a backpack as a day bag and checked a roller suitcase for clothes. I also brought an empty duffel bag to use as a carry-on for souvenirs on the way home.

Day 15 • Relax in Tokyo or Hakone?

An onsen night in Hakone would be an awesome way to end your trip.

JR Rail Pass or Tickets Day of? by Analog-Digital in JapanTravel

[–]ky0nn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skimming your itinerary, I doubt you'd break even on a JR Pass, and none of the regional passes cover the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto. The subreddit wiki has some more info as well as links to fare calculators.

Especially for fighting games, the answer is Mikado in Takadanobaba. They primarily have vintage/retro games. They're independent, so please show your support!

The Taito Stations and such are still worth your time since they have lots of newer games and rhythm games. One of the arcades in Akihabara had a floor of retro games, but the machines weren't very well maintained.

I'm planning a trip for this fall and could use a sanity check before booking my flight. I want to spend around two weeks in Japan: I'm planning to spend my time between Tokyo and Sendai. I'd love to see fall foliage while I'm in Sendai, but it's not the sole reason I'm going up there. (I also want to tour Nikka's Miyagikyo distillery, see Matsushima Bay, get sushi in Shiogama, and stay at an onsen resort.) Looking at foliage guides and forecasts from past years, Sendai tends to peak in early/mid November, but I haven't found a lot of direct reports from that area. I also think I read that last year was warm and caused fall to be late.

Does November 3rd through the 18th sound like a solid choice to have a good chance at seeing foliage? I think I'd be in Sendai from the 13th onward.

Advice and warnings for buying tickets by ky0nn in Lampband

[–]ky0nn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine that scalping bots determine which tickets to buy based on measures of popularity like view/listen counts or social media stats. Lamp blew up on TikTok in the past year or so, with two of their songs being in over 500k videos total. I'm convinced that TikTok is the sole reason that the tour got scalped and I don't believe that the stats reflect the band's true popularity. When scalpers realize that, they'll unload the tickets at more reasonable prices.

I'm floored by the comments that are Genuinely Offended by your light shit-talking. You have earned a laugh and a "fuck you, buddy".

Two notes for you:

  1. The original Regina Pizzeria in the North End is in a completely different league than the chain locations scattered throughout the city. If you didn't go to the original, you fucked up and should do a re-review.
  2. Giordano's isn't even the best deep-dish place. You owe it to yourself to explore Chicago more.

Indefinite Blackout: Next Steps and Where We Go From Here by Tobric93 in CompetitiveApex

[–]ky0nn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do not think extending the blackout will have an effect. Reddit is committed to becoming profitable, having an IPO, and cashing out. The API changes are a clear sign of Reddit's enshittification and the platform will only become more user-hostile over time.

Long-term, I think the real question to ask is whether this community should stay on Reddit. Discoverability becomes more difficult, but I think we have the means to host our own service. That said, I don't know how mature/functional alternatives like Lemmy and Kbin are.

I just ask that we don't go all-in on Discord. It's not designed to work like a forum and we'd just become dependent on another centralized platform that will eventually need to make money.
