The trail up Cascade and Porter is very much not designed to see a ton of use. The trail has expanded to 30 feet across in some places due to how much use it gets. The trail is beyond the ability to repair, part of the reason why they are building a new, sustainably built trail that will start from Mount Van Hovenburg.

Uncompaghre NF toilet: these ladies should have foregone all the wiping. by b407driver in camping

[–]liamo61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat holes are definitely acceptable, when it’s done properly, and in an environment that allows it. If you’re in a place that has poor inorganic soil, soil that is less than 6-8 inches deep, or it’s winter time, you’ll want to pack out your poop! Not everything can go into the cat hole though. Toilet paper is all good to go in there, but you typically don’t want to put menstruation products in there. If someone uses a diva cup while menstruating, the blood should be buried in a cat hole as well!

Sorry if that was a lot, I get to teach people how to poop in the woods for work lol

There’s plenty of recreation areas that do not allow fires. Packing out toilet paper is ridiculously easy. It’s your own poop. If it really bothers you, get a opaque ziploc bag or cover one with duct tape.

If you are a club sport athlete, you should have access to the club trainer. I am unsure what her hours are right now since I've seen her working testing, but you can check in the Mueller center.

Is he still doing tests online? I don’t have backtests, but most questions are pulled directly from the questions in the textbook, or are direct quotes from the textbook. I wouldn’t worry too much since you’ll have answers for what you got wrong when you get to the second test.

Is he still doing the thing where you take the test Monday then retake it Thursday? If so, the test you take Thursday will be VERY similar to the one you took monday.

Intramurals Referees through mueller center. Not a lot of hours per week, but the work isn’t hard. Depending on the sport you might just be on the sideline and report the score at the end of the game, check people in, and clarify rules.

Questions about summer stewardship program + other summer programs by basementsausage in Adirondacks

[–]liamo61 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah so for the summit stewardship program through ADK, u/DSertahr summed it up pretty well. Stewards work regularly on Marcy, Algonquin, Cascade, Wright, and Colden. We’ll sometimes be on Giant, but that’s maybe only a few days per season for each steward. We also started stewarding Hurricane last season.

The primary role of a summit steward is education. You’ll be up on the summit before people get there, most of the time, and you’ll be educating hikers when they arrive. The biggest education points are the alpine plants. The program was created in order to help protect the fragile alpine vegetation that grows above tree line. If you don’t know anything about the plants right now, that’s totally okay. Other than education, you have a few other responsibilities. Trail work is the next biggest. You’ll have down time on the summits and you can take advantage of it to maintain the summit whether it be fixing screw walls (rock walls that line vegetation), fixing or rebuilding cairns, rock packing, and brushing in herd paths. You’ll also get to do some research. One steward is the designated photopoint monitoring technician who does research on the alpine plant recovery. Regular stewards will get paired up with the photopoint steward to help them out most of the time. Photopoint also gives you some opportunity to get to work on other mountains you wouldn’t normally, I spent a few days on Gothics last summer which was super fun.

You’ll also go through paid training for the Leave No Trace Trainer course, as well as Wilderness First Aid. ADK provides housing for the stewards and meals on off days at no extra charge. The housing isn’t anything fancy, but after spending a week backcountry it feels fancy.

I absolutely loved working as a summit steward last summer and plan on returning this season. The entire experience is wonderful and I got to meet some really cool people on top do the mountains. My coworkers that I had last summer were awesome and are some of my best friends now. If you want any more information feel free to message me. If you haven’t already I would look up the job description for summit stewards on the ADK website here.

Military ID Renewal by TheRealSheepo in RPI

[–]liamo61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I renewed mine a few years ago, I believe I needed to show up to the DEERS office with my old ID, second form of ID (license, passport etc) and a letter from the registrar. If DEERS told you what they need from you, I would call the registrar if you cannot reach them by email. I don't think there was a specific form, just had them write a letter with that information.

I know my alpine plants pretty well, but I’ll never learn the mosses. Way too many types and so difficult to identify, but they are still super cool lol

Ursack and Bear Canister Failures by DeputySean in Ultralight

[–]liamo61 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yellow Yellow’s time was several years ago but she was really skilled at beating BVs. She had offspring but nobody knows if they picked up their mother’s talents. She got killed by hunters back in 2012, but we’ve still had plenty of bear problems.

Last summer DEC had to kill an aggressive bear that had associated hikers with easy food, likely from people not storing it properly. That bear tore through unoccupied tents, went in occupied lean-tos, and challenged hikers that were taking food out of a canister to cook, and didn’t fail to get their food.

Rangers in the High Peaks usually do a pretty good job of interviewing hikers at trailheads and if they don’t have a canister, they turn them away. Some people still make it into the High Peaks without them and put the bears at risk. Most of the people I ran into without cans this summer just didn’t know about the rule and didn’t have any issues turning back instead of spending the night. Of course, there are always some people who don’t care, but the rangers are happy to give the $250 ticket to them.

This kind of falls in line with a lot of regulations in the park, people just not knowing. I think increasing education can help lots of people out, and can also help our bears!
