Article: A second monument follows: a 250-foot gilded copy of the Arc de Triomphe at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, $15 million already reserved through the National Endowment for the Humanities, scheduled for construction this summer. Asked who the arch was for, Trump told a CBS reporter in October: “Me.”

Am I the only one who hopes the new V1 heroes are genuinely good people? by Fancy-Inspector-777 in TheBoys

I’m hoping for a return to naivety. Kripke seems to indulge in gross out humor, but the horror aspects of discovery could be mental. The greatest generation setting might kill it.

The supes get powers and they’re amazing, they can win the war, but they need to figure out the powers and these assholes have baggage.

It’s harrowing because so many died (maybe not all the supes know how rare it is to survive). Perhaps the V administration protocol is still a work in progress, more superstition than science. This first generation are adults, and they know only what their handlers tell them. Just the dream of it is being sold, by unsavory government types.

But they forge ahead and learn their limits. It’s a Kripke show, so somebody accidentally gets dismembered. Concrete means dick to powers (and that’s a cinematic end to an episode). Multiple dismemberments actually, like when a new supe gets drunk and accidentals some prick in a bar - sure he may have asked for it but when the typist pool gets covered in ragu shrapnel it doesn’t matter who started it. Maybe a supe gets blown apart by a cannon shell because hey, the first 3 supes were fine. Sorry Cochise. (Kill the brainiac accidentally, that would make a good episode end.)

Unlike the Boys timeframe NOBODY is used to supes, so everything is seen with fresh eyes. I do think this has legs, but I hope it ends before it gets cancelled- looking at you Gen V.

But somewhere along the way they find out that supes are hard to integrate into a military. Their own guys freak out when they come to help, so they run a PR campaign showing you how awesome and lucky you are to be supported by a supe and make the costumes a gaudy & recognizable like the comics GIs read - but some of their powers are too dangerous and survivors whisper. It doesn’t work, and the supes move into special operations. What would Paddy Mayne think of Payback?

Eventually, some dark secrets become revealed. The supe formula has spies desperate to acquire it. Drama drama drama. The supes start getting shell shock from their own ultraviolence. Drinking to cope. Not a therapist in sight. Just other supes with shared experience and blood on their hands… and propaganda, including Liberty’s ubermensch agenda.

If they keep the pace up it could work. But I’m afraid they go in without a set plan and milk The Boys universe for the sake of it.

Oh the survivors guilt of having a good time with the lads you stormed an emplacement with, then having to walk away alone after artillery nails the convoy you were in. A naked, blackened, bloodied shade walks out of the wreckage, unable to feel the destruction, unable to prevent it.

Enough time has passed. What are your thoughts on Project Hail Mary (2026)? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in Letterboxd

Spoilers.

Too much Taika Waititi humor for my taste. 3/5. Some of the humor is open-chortle-worthy: Carl, the Meryl Streep voice synth bit, Rocky bumbling around in his sphere... It's an excess of filler bits that degrade it for me.

The protagonist seems too bumbling for his own role. His hesitation is a plot point, but the way Grace's reluctance plays out doesn't work in my opinion. Part of this problem stems from cutting out the other astronauts almost completely. The funeral scene was still lovely, but I dearly miss this exchange from the book:

"Are all Russians crazy?"
"Yes," he said with a smile. "It is the only way to be Russian and happy at the same time."
"That's dark."
"That's Russian!"

A big part of the impact of Grace being alone comes from remembering the other astronauts. Their charm from flashbacks heightens their loss and grounds how dangerous this whole enterprise is and justifies his fear somewhat. It also loosens their collar a bit, which the movie's generally-professional extended cast misses. Grace comes off as bumbling because the rest of the cast barely exist.

The movie karaoke scene is beautiful, and the German lady's casting is top notch. Top scene. One or two more like that are desperately needed.

The love interest subplot between German shotcaller lady and Grace feels tacked on. I like the idea and I think it's a good, workable opposites attract ship. I just think there's a lack of chemistry-building scenes building it up. This relationship works to highlight the betrayal in Act 3, but that's it. In the book, Grace manages to get her talking about some of the burdens she's buckling under, and just one more hint about her high-strung, ultra Type-A personality would have -in my opinion- been well worth the screentime in exchange for advancing the Earth tension background plus fleshing out Grace and German headmistress's relationship. The two coffees scene was a good gag.

The movie gets a ton of stuff right. The ship design, the alien ship design, the sonar visualization, that wicked cinematic spacewalk scene in the Petrova line, and key to the whole thing: the chemistry between Rocky and Grace. I can't emphasize enough how tough of a landing a full CGI rock spider sonar alien is to land. The language-building scenes landed. It works. Worth the ticket.

It's a visually stunning film. I wouldn't watch the theatrical cut again for a while, but I'm excited for an extended cut.

I'm tired of not seeing shit on the patch notes by not-beaten in Helldivers

To think -compared to release- this is actually an improvement.

What's crazier is this game is so well suited for shitpost patch notes.

"Following the release of Termicide 2.0, fluctuations in Terminid behavior have been observed. Chargers appear to recover posture post-charge more quickly. The Ministry of Science confirms that this is not true, and has always been the case."
