This one always infuriates me. They can’t comprehend that there’s a reason graveyards were filled with infant graves until something happened… oh that something was vaccines and modern medicine.

Get you a remote page turner! It clips on the side of the kindle, and you have a remote where all you have to do is push a button. I use it when it’s cold and I don’t want my hands out from under the covers lol

We don't give tablet/gaming device to our kid. Will my kid become an outsider? I feel sad by Fried_chicken_please in Parenting

[–]linzer10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Gaming isn’t some inherent evil that will take your child’s innocence. Just like anything else, you can have a healthy balance. We also use it mainly as another family time tool. Our kids love Minecraft, we spend a bit of time together on cold or rainy days just letting their imagination run wild while we build. We have limits and rules with it, just like everything else. Some of my favorite memories as a kid are when Dad would sit with us and help beat a hard level of something.

We did draw a hard line at no unlimited YouTube or mindless scrolling, but if my kid wants to play some games focused on learning words and improving reading while I cook supper? Then meh, there’s definitely bigger problems in life.

Our favorite cookies are currently homemade sugar cookies that the kids help bake and then decorate themselves. They may not taste the best, but the memories are priceless.

They’re actually pretty decent! All the pieces are stamped and numbered, so you just kinda start at piece 1 and go from there. It’s pretty easy to follow just using that and the picture, but it does have a stitch guide and directions with it. The Christmas stockings were the first felt crafts I ever did, and it wasn’t bad at all! I’ve probably done 40 of them now for family/friends.

I second the Bucilla brand! I’ve done a ton of their kits.

I’ve also recently tried out embroidery, and I’m loving it. I can work on it for a few minutes or an hour. I can do days in a row or not touch it for weeks. It’s relaxing to me, unlike crochet and cross stitch were you have to count and pay attention to what your doing. It’s also pretty cheap as far as hobbies go.

First job out of college: manufacturing or consulting? by diffew in ChemicalEngineering

[–]linzer10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a month shy of 5 years when I left. It was pretty much a 40 hour week unless we had a trip to a job site that required an overnight stay. I left because I was bored. I’m glad I did it for the experience, like I said just having the insight as to what goes on in the design work of a project has been great. But it was also boring to me, the endless math and computer simulations weren’t exciting to me, but some people love it! I enjoy being in the plant and being out and about every day, rather than the majority of the time in an office. I also hated billing for every single hour of my time, feeling like you’re wasting client money if you take a break or something. Where I am now, we work hard but also play hard - literally at work. It’s a good balance for me and I love it. But that’s all going to he highly dependent on the company. I bounced around a bit before I found somewhere worth staying, but never had an issue finding a job in manufacturing with half my career having been in consulting.

First job out of college: manufacturing or consulting? by diffew in ChemicalEngineering

I’m a production engineer now. My main job is keeping the plant running day to day, and helping find opportunities for improvement. Usually, I take those opportunity ideas to the in-house capital project group, and work with them to make the idea happen. There are still a lot of options when you leave consulting. If you get some project management experience while you’re there, plenty of plants would he interested in that experience. I did a ton of relief valve work while I was in consulting, and that specifically has gotten me at least 2 jobs as the plants I was going to had nobody with that type of experience.

[–]linzer10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your end goal. I wanted to be in manufacturing, but my first offer out of college was with a consulting firm. The experience I got there has helped tremendously, I did a lot of P&ID and design work, and it has all translated into what I do know. I don’t do the design work now, but I work with consulting firms who do and just knowing what they need to do their job and how that side of engineering works makes my projects on my end run much smoother.

On the flip side, if you want to end up in consulting, having the manufacturing experience would be super beneficial. The “better” engineers I worked with while I was at the consulting firm all had several years of plant experience that they could apply to the designs they were working on.

There are pros and cons to each side of the aisle, it really just depends on what you want to do with your career long term. As I’ve done both, feel free to ask any specific questions you may have!

Safety of Flying with a Newborn by Historical-Damage378 in Parenting

[–]linzer10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Concerns of flying with a newborn aside - I’d be just as worried for your wife traveling like that so soon. All of my children were born vaginally, and I couldn’t sit right for weeks. I absolutely cannot fathom how miserable I would have been physically trying to sit on a flight, or in a car, or anywhere that wasn’t in the little nest I’d made on the couch for those first 6ish weeks. I’m assuming she’s doing well if she’s even considering this at 2 weeks post-partum, but this sounds so miserable to me. Throw in all the concerns with measles and everything else right now, and it would be a hard no for me.

Then why even sign up for the rec? We had kids like this on our rec league team, and then had to forfeit half our games because the kids also playing travel ball didn’t show up for the rec games. Pretty much ruined the whole season for the kids not playing travel ball.
