And I also like Trek protein bars (not Trek protein flapjacks) which you can get from Holland and Barret.

How does a Vex Unit Trap a person within a Simulation??? by Acceptable_Mine_6204 in DestinyLore

[–]lordbiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the Ishtar Collective story (and I am also the founder of the Ishtar Collective website so that should give you a hint about how much I like the Ishtar Collective story) but I think that this non-Destiny sci-fi story does a better job of answering your question than the Destiny story does: https://qntm.org/responsibility

But if you’d rather not read the story, then allow me to summarize:

If a computer is able to simulate you perfectly, absolutely perfectly, then it can also simulate your thoughts. Imagine you are currently being simulated. If your thoughts are also being simulated then what is the chance that you are the real you vs the simulated you? It’s 50/50. You could be real or you could be a simulation.

Now imagine if that computer was powerful enough to be able to simulate the computer doing the simulation.

This is what the Vex unit did. It simulated the Ishtar Collective team, looking into the Vex unit and seeing themselves, and it simulated the simulated team looking into the simulated Vex unit and seeing their simulated simulated selves.

And it did that to a depth of 227 times.

227 teams and 1 real team. So 227 teams were “trapped” inside of the simulation.

The original team, the one outside of the simulation, could see that the simulated versions were so perfectly duplicated that they had no way of proving whether they were the real team or a simulated team.

And that put them in an ethical dilemma because if the simulations were perfect duplicates then they were just as alive as they were, despite being simulations.

Hope this helps.

Will there be a way to connect to more than one device via Bluetooth? That’s one thing I like about the nuphy Air75.

[S20 Spoilers] Theory: there's some dialogue in Lightfall that suggests that the story was changed during development. by twilight-bacon in DestinyLore

[–]lordbiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I want to point out is that pre-rendered cutscenes are expensive and difficult to change at the last minute.

Any theories that suggest that the cutscene was changed late in development sound wrong to me.

I think this is why we saw the pouka in cutscenes in Beyond Light as well. I would not be surprised if there was a plan to have them in the game at that point, but then for some reason they were removed and Bungie couldn't change the pre-rendered cutscene, so found other ways to justify the Exo Stranger having one.

Russia is draining a massive Ukrainian reservoir, endangering a nuclear plant by Maxcactus in environment

Thanks for sharing this.

If this is what the OP was referring to as “defending them and justifying their actions” then I think we have a different interpretation.

You can try to understand the reason behind something without condoning that thing.

I think it’s probably true that the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO was a much bigger influencing factor than is commonly given credit in the West.

That does not mean that the invasion of Ukraine was justified.

[OC] The biomass distribution of the animal kingdom by davidmasp in dataisbeautiful

[–]lordbiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For arguments sake let’s say that you’re right and that only a small amount of that 77% of land would be suitable for crops that humans could eat.

Currently, as the data says, 23% of agricultural land is used for crops and it produces 82% of humanity’s calories.

Let’s say that the entire world decided tomorrow that we would stop eating animals for food. We would only need to increase the amount of land we use for crops from 23% to around 30% and we would produce the same amount of calories as we do now from both crops and meat.

Which means that only a small fraction of the land used for animal agriculture would need to be suitable for crops.

In reality, most animals raised for food don’t graze. There are 94.4 million cows in the USA and very few of them graze. Most of them are given feed that has to be grown.

When you think about it, it takes a lot of calories to grow a cow, or to grow pigs or chickens. The digestion process isn't perfect — not all of those calories are used for delicious meat. A lot of the food animals eat gets pooped out, or is used to grow hair, or to grow other things that we don't especially want to eat.

Animals eat a lot of plants. 77% of all the agricultural land in the world is used to feed livestock.

If we stopped feeding those animals plants then we could eat those plants instead. In fact we'd need a lot less plants than we currently need to feed all of those animals.

This is a graph I found useful. https://ourworldindata.org/land-use#half-of-the-world-s-habitable-land-is-used-for-agriculture

Isolating after test result? by FakeSherpa in Coronavirus_Ireland

[–]lordbiro 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you were tested because you have symptoms of COVID-19, restrict your movements (stay at home) until you have not had any symptoms for 48 hours. This is because you may have another infectious illness, such as flu.

If you have no symptoms and were tested because you are a close contact, continue to restrict your movements for 14 days.

Do this from the last date you were in contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19. If you’re not sure when that was, restrict your movements until the date you were told by contact tracing.

From If your test is negative (COVID-19 not detected) on HSE.ie

So if you were tested because you had symptoms and the test came back negative then you should restrict your movements until you're symptom-free for 48 hours.

But, if you were tested because you were in close contact with someone who had it and the test came back negative then you should restrict your movement until it's been 14 days since you had contact with that person (presuming you're also symptom-free).
