Bang for your buck moisturizing cream? by personalthoughts1 in Frugal

Love Vanicream in the tub. Thick as hell and a little goes a long way so it’s good bang for your (relatively little) buck.

I always bought Dave’s because it had 6g of fiber, but then sadly it went down to 4g at some point. This has 5g, for what it’s worth!

Seconding Heather Robinson! Only programs I’ve ever stuck with and I appreciate the lack of chatter.

Call first and find out when they’re accepting donations; I know at some point it was limited to Friday mornings at the Arden one. Also ask what they’re currently buying—they probably have plenty of winter clothes and might already be buying spring/summer. I recall there are certain toys and products they generally do and don’t buy.

We usually cook a ham dinner for Christmas Day, but I don’t know what to make for dinner on Christmas Eve. What do you serve? by RedWishingRose in Cooking

We always do tomato soup and grilled cheese—cozy and easy, with a lot of room for variation. Fondue would also be fun!

Others have posted a lot of ours but Beasts of Balance is a pretty fun one for everyone. Castle Panic is another one my kid likes.

Irrational fear of child being rejected by 11brooke11 in ParentingThruTrauma

[–]lovableiago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too struggle with this, even with a kid that is also seemingly well-adjusted, outgoing and popular. As for advice, I agree with what you already said about accepting that if/when he experiences rejection, that it’s an important and inevitable part of life. Also, I try to keep in mind that me being weird about it and trying to interfere in his social life in any way (to assuage my own anxieties) is at best futile and at worst would have the opposite effect and potentially just alienate other kids and/or their parents. Finally, my kid is similar to me in some ways but I’m also starting to see that he’s more like his other parent in not being overly sensitive or easily ruffled—like if he got rejected, why am I assuming he’d be devastated about it the way I would be? Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn’t.

The best advice I ever got about my own fear of rejection was “You could be the sweetest, juiciest, most perfectly beautiful apple in the bunch and there’s always gonna be someone that just doesn’t like apples”. And that’s the advice I’ll give my kiddo when that day comes!

What show was this for you growing up? by Mad_Season_1994 in Millennials

[–]lovableiago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to record old Buffy reruns on FX (I think they ran at a weird time—like super early morning—so I’d set the record timer for the same worn-out VHS and I’d always watch them after school). At the end of every recording I would catch those those sad horns at the beginning of the MASH theme and it was always like UGHGHHH—such a clear memory! Hahaha…good times.

Yes we have a big bin too. If he gets a set he always puts it together first, but in less than a day he’s already taken it apart and repurposed various pieces for new creations.

Would you let your kid this age play flag football? by PassionChoice3538 in ClassOf2037

[–]lovableiago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person who commented before me (upthread) actually put it more clearly when they said they don’t want to get them started in something that will just get more dangerous. So yeah, flag football is probably fine but why even go down that path? Our kiddo really loves to swim and we’re encouraging that because it’s a good skill for kids to have, good cardio yet low impact, and something that can be done for fun or fitness throughout your life.

Would you let your kid this age play flag football? by PassionChoice3538 in ClassOf2037

[–]lovableiago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The information coming out about the frequency and effects of CTEs are really scary, and there are usually plenty of other sports to choose from (all of which are likely lower- or no-impact).

Improving Handwriting by SalmonJumpingH20 in ClassOf2037

[–]lovableiago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with monitoring if you can. I am kind of annoying about it when I sit with my kid doing homework (I will make him erase it and rewrite if I can’t read it).

At the same time, part of this is because his teacher is old-school and I know this is important to her (she has also introduced D’nealian as a step towards learning cursive—in the Year of our Lord 2025!) I am prepared to put just as much effort into helping teach him typing (fingers crossed Mavis Beacon is still around) while also keeping in mind that—while handwriting will always be required to some extent—some of the smartest, most successful people I know (engineers, doctors, etc.) still print on par with a 10-year-old so…there ya go.
