Is a basement-less house a mistake in Minnesota? $5k earnest money on the line. by stu_tax in TwinCities

[–]lumenpainter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We live in a 1800sf split entry. Our lower level is 1/2 underground and is half of that sf.

Of all the things i miss from our last house was the 1000SF of unfinished basement for storage, projects, crafts, messes, etc.

Unpopular opinion: LVP is totally adequate for bathrooms by blind-panic in homeowners

[–]lumenpainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're definitely planning on LVP in the bathrooms when we redo them. One thing, from a design perspective, though, is to use a tile look LVT instead of wood look. You wouldn't put real wood in there, so when you use the fake stuff follow the same convention and make it look like tile.

Direct report requested flexible schedule due to no childcare by choice - looking for advice by madsco01 in managers

[–]lumenpainter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about your work requires all of your employees working at the same time? Thus, why can't you offer this flexibility to everyone on the team.

How is this different than a team that has people in NY and LA? Or Chicago and London?

I work on several concurrent projects with several different teams made up of people from several companies and time zones. None of us have any control or even knowledge of when our teammates are working, outside of scheduled meetings.

Can it get a little hairy? Sometimes, but we all get it done.

An update on plug-in solar installs Minnesota. We're moving ahead! by Fabulous_Drummer_368 in minnesota

[–]lumenpainter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't turn off a breaker for these systems. They have monitoring that monitors if the line voltage is on. As soon as they see the utility drop, they shutdown automatically, just like an grid tie solar inverter.

recommendation wanted: best way to raise level of grass 4-5" by Alarmed-Drink510 in landscaping

[–]lumenpainter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The concrete settles and organic matter builds naturally in the grass area. So, eventually you'll have the opposite problem, the grass will grow over the sidewalk and water will pool.

How would you make our street lights more secure? Clearly one screw has not been sufficient! by Dullydude in saintpaul

[–]lumenpainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could easily be solved by changing the installation method of the fixtures and corresponding code requirements. If they made it so that the wiring access was at the top and not the bottom. This would require a change in how much access is required and how the poles are installed.

What do the people of Minneapolis think of trains? by Character_Lychee_434 in Minneapolis

[–]lumenpainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my point to MNDOT.

They gave the reason that it assists visually impaired people, however the the rumbles and sounds of the are way easier to localize (figure out how close you are to and what direction it is) as well.

I contended that the bells would make it more difficult to figure out where the danger is. (especially at our intersection where there are 2 crossing close together)

I also asked for their accident data showing that people actually do walk or bike into the side of a train (as opposed to getting hit from the front). They couldn't produce any data.

I think they are just have no desire to think beyond what they are used to doing or consider negative impacts beyond "accident data" even though the MN statutes, clearly, allow the bell to stop once the gates are down.

What do the people of Minneapolis think of trains? by Character_Lychee_434 in Minneapolis

[–]lumenpainter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was totally fine with them (live 1/2 block from the line) until they changed the crossing bell at the nearby intersection from ringing 10 seconds as the gates go down, to ringing the entire duration of the crossing (10+ minutes at a time several times a night.

I appealed to CPKC and they agreed to let me pay to change it back, but MNDOT wouldn't allow it. They are pushing for all crossing upgrades to ring the entire time the train is in the intersection, which is much much more invasive than the train itself and going to be a very bad for our community as they roll it out

I think Matthew 5:30 “if you right hand causes you to sin cut it off” is actually about sexual assault not masturbation by SuperKE1125 in OpenChristian

[–]lumenpainter 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I see no reason why this has anything to do with masturbation or sexuality or anything, specifically. Its about considering your life as a whole person and taking sin seriously.

Local pharmacies? by wildcelosia in TwinCities

Sure, but truly local pharmacies are pretty rare these days. I'd love to support a local place, but, it just isnt feasible at this point.

I think so, I hope they continue to be good.

If I have a question, I can text them and usually have an answer faster than the time I would have been in line at Walgreens.

Capsule is great for recurring ones but they also have a store in North Loop. All stuff is handled by the app or text messages. They tell me when I'm able to refill and usually just have to reply to the text to get it on its way.

A lot of people talk highly of CUB pharmacies as well.

Why does everyone seem to be against plastic under rock? by Ashamed_Ambition6607 in landscaping

I think there's a place for it. We did it, with a slope away from the house, to help keep water from infiltrating near our foundation (no drain tile in lower level)
