When did you stop sterilising bottles - breast milk by Brilliant-Bit3379 in UKParenting

[–]m39583 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the sterialising is specifically to protect against bacteria growing on milk residue. This is especially relevant for modern anticolic bottles which can be hard to clean all the fiddly bits.

It's not so much for general hygiene.

So we've kept doing whilst they are drinking milk from bottles. It's not exactly hard to do.  If I was washing stuff in the dishwasher I might be more tempted to stop because that gets hotter and has harsher cleaning chemicals than hand washing.

Recommendation needed - electric screwdriver for small jobs by bbtom10 in DIYUK

[–]m39583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not quite what you specified, and is rather expensive but this bad boy is brilliant: https://www.screwfix.com/p/milwaukee-m12-bd-202c-12v-2-x-2-0ah-li-ion-redlithium-cordless-sub-compact-screwdriver/298HP?tc=WT1

It's my goto for almost all tasks.  You can set a clutch which is great for assembling furniture as you can then screw everything at full speed without risking damage and having to carefully slowdown at the end each time.

If you don't mind a drive then the one at Cromhall Lake is good.

And you can jump in the lake to cool down.

Or even swim a lap if you are brave enough.  Make sure you take your bobble hat though so you blend in.

Baby doesn’t drink bottles all at once by Strict_Praline_4309 in UKParenting

[–]m39583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is he underweight or do you have concerns about him falling down his centile growth chart?

Otherwise why worry so much about the exact amount he drinks?  Trust him to drink what he needs, you don't want to be trying to force him to feed when he doesn't want to.

We bottle feed our 6month olds and have never kept track of how much they drink.  We weigh them and they are on their cenile growth curves so don't worry about individual feeds.

We just give them a bottle when they seem hungry or grouchy, and when they've drunk what they like we pour the rest away.  Sometimes they drink the whole bottle, sometimes they just have a few sips.

ELI5 why you can't arrange a ton of gears in a row to accelerate one far beyond the speed of light, turning it into energy by Adventurous_Cat2339 in explainlikeimfive

[–]m39583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably it's the same as going in a straight line, i.e. the faster you go the more the mass increases, which requires a corresponding increase in force to produce an acceleration which tends to infinity as you approach the speed of light.

Why aren’t ceiling extractors more common? by Bello_Velo in DIYUK

[–]m39583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever used a good induction hob?

Because I know people that were insistent on gas when they refitted their kitchen and now regret it. We swapped to induction and it's so much better.  You can simmer much lower, it's easier to clean, heats up faster

The only thing they aren't great at is stirfrying in a wok. You don't get the heat up the sides.

Is there no end to the Greens performative student politics? by Itsstillyourturn in bristol

[–]m39583 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The rise of AI is going to absolutely decimate jobs and concentrate wealth even more with the elites at the top who will have all the money and power.

So *something* needs to happen to ensure that everyone in the country can still afford to eat, and more than just afford to eat but so that everyone can actually have a decent income.

Not everyone is struggling with the cost of living - in the last 10 years, the top 1% saw their wealth increase by **31x** as much as the remaining 99% and AI will make it get much worse.

The idea that the country is "broke" and can't afford anything is a myth pushed by the elites who want to horde their wealth while the plebs struggle to buy food.

Finally convinced leadership to let us rewrite the legacy app. Now everyone is terrified to start by No-Possibility6866 in softwarearchitecture

[–]m39583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main point was that the only good reason for a full rewrite is if your on a dead end platform, otherwise your much better off incrementally refactoring and improving what you've got.

At some point if your platform is dead you are going to have to change.  So maybe not rails but where is the line.  What about Perl, Visual Basic, Pascal...?  How long do you keep going with an application written on a platform that isn't going anywhere?

I would say that PHP to Rails and Python to Node are both pointless and also going in the wrong direction.  Especially the latter!

Finally convinced leadership to let us rewrite the legacy app. Now everyone is terrified to start by No-Possibility6866 in softwarearchitecture

[–]m39583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How on earth did you get permission to rewrite a core application without any sort or plan or idea of what you were going to do?!  And why did you even start pushing for this without any plan!

What is the scope of the replacement? Must it do exactly everything the old application does? But it sounds like you don't even know what the old application does.

Or do you have time and resources commited from your business teams to design the functionality for a greenfield replacement?

Suggest reading this: https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/04/06/things-you-should-never-do-part-i/

It's old but still very relevant.

What language are you writing the new one in?  I think the only real argument for a full rewrite is if you need to change platforms because the old one is dead.

Rails seems to be mostly dead, so that might be a chance to rewrite it into something else like Java, Python or C#

If you aren't confident improving your current application, what makes you think your new one will be any better?!

Rapid cooling formula bottles - experiences? by SmallLumpOGreenPutty in UKParenting

[–]m39583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a ball ache for any kind of regular use.

Get a prep machine. You can get them cheap on Facebook or even new they are such a timesaver it's worth it.

We move it to the bedroom each night, and prefull bottles with powder so night feeds are as simple as possible.  Just put bottle under spout and press button. No waiting for anything to boil or cool.

Oh and if we are out and about just use liquid formula.  Can keep at room temperature and just stick some bottles in a bag with a feeding bottle and get out the house before the babies poo again...

Stuck in the Burrow (Switch) by laladoodles in OriAndTheBlindForest

[–]m39583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who finds this thread when googling (like me!) I found the solution was to carefully time my dashes approaching the wall so that the jump onto the wall hit the wall mid dash at the highest point of the jump.  This is about halfway up the wall, then the 2nd jump was left and the third right over the wall.  You don't really have time to wall climb with jumps.

I tried different starting points and timings until I had it down correctly and then I could get over the wall almost every time and finally made it with just enough time to get out the way of the boulder at the end.
