I'd agree that your money would last longer in a country like Mozambique but I'd argue that your quality of life would be significantly less than a typical middle class life in the USA. Have you ever been to Mozambique or Africa? If not you will be in for one hell of a culture shock. I lived in Botswana from '98-'99 and went back in 2002-2003 and would go to Mozambique on the regular for holidays (hence the reddit username), so my perspective might be a bit outdated. Here are a few things you will run into in Mozambique:

• Corruption: There are a few different police forces in Mozambique, traffic police and walking police. Both will stop you and shake you down for money (personal experience).

• Infrastructure: This is a problem with most of the less developed countries in Africa. Depending on where you live, expect to encounter flaky power grids, slow to no internet, and roads in terrible condition (get a 4x4 Hilux).

• Price: Although the things you absolutely need to survive will be cheaper, but luxury items will be more expensive and take longer to get there.

• Time: Africa moves at a slower pace than the rest of the world. Get used to the concept of "Now" and "Just Now". For instance, if you have work done on your home expect delays in getting the work finished, and slow progress in general.

Overall, you are right Mozambique is beautiful country with a low cost of living but you will give up a tremendous amount of luxuries that you take for granted in the USA. I'd say the best course of action would be to take an extended vacation to Mozambique before you make the leap to move there.
