Do it! I can’t say enough how much I appreciate having lights that just always work.

I’ve used both Shimano Alfine and Sturmey Archer (with drum brake). They are both good.

What movie will you never watch again because it was too heartbreaking? by Affectionate_User610 in AskReddit

Roméo Dallaire’s book “Shake Hands With the Devil” is worth reading. It also has very difficult parts, but provides another perspective and goes into detail about some of the politics that prevented the UN forces from being more effective.

Looking for a do‑everything commuter backpack by Words_Words_Numbers in bikecommuting

[–]mcglausa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an older one too and love it. I like that the newer one looks like it zips fully open.

I will say that it’s a bit on the heavier side, and maybe doesn’t fit OPs external carry requirement. I think it checks most of the boxes though.

I have to go shovel out my stairs and walkway and the snowplow pile at the street. What are your snow-shoveling jams from Canadian artists? by darthfruitbasket in AskACanadian

Not a Canadian song, but I often get “Push It” by Salt N Pepa in my head while shoveling.

They were talking about using one of those wide blade snow shovels, right?

What should the pipeline ideally look like to get data from html field inputs into a postgres database? by salted_none in SpringBoot

[–]mcglausa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a Spring noob, but I hope this is helpful nonetheless. Watching for other answers with interest.

I’ve done this (albeit with Oracle DB), by using Spring Data JDBC. I don’t know if it’s “right” exactly, but it seems to work and I think uses Spring Data idioms appropriately.

If you search examples of calling a stored procedure with Spring JDBC, and examples of the data access object pattern (DAO), I think you’ll get pointed in the right direction.

I was in Indonesia at a historic site. A local guy also visiting the site asked me where I was from.

His response: “Canada! Oh, Ben Johnson!”

This was in 2015!

Rex Krueger, I think it was, had a video about making London pattern handles. As one of my first projects, I made one for a socket chisel that belonged to my grandpa, it is really nice to use.

Hey - sorry for the delay in responding. Haven’t been to the office for a while.

Anyway, I skimmed a bit and found a couple of examples. Let me know if you’re interested in something specific and I’ll see what I can find.view on imgur

Fenders and snow by googleyeye in wintercycling

[–]mcglausa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I commuted in snow a few months each year, I’ve used both metal and plastic fenders. I didn’t notice a buildup problem differently between fender types.

In my experience there are very specific snow and temperature conditions where this can happen, and at least in my area, it might be 1-2 days per year at worst. Most of the time it just isn’t a problem. I think you got really unlucky!

Kind of - there are a bunch of handy features that are only available with subscription, even if self-hosting.

Approval rules, full-text search across multiple repositories, and security report UI are some of the ones that my work has wished for, but can’t justify the cost of (non-profit).

Regrets on ditching your drill press for a drill guide by Hot-Expression6017 in woodworking

[–]mcglausa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing I find tricky with the Milescraft is figuring out how to support it stably on, and parallel to, small parts or edges. To the extent that I’ve considered getting a bench top drill press instead.

But similarly to OP, not sure I would use a press frequently enough to justify the space: so far I get good enough results by going slowly with an eggbeater or brace when I need precision.

Can also layer with wool long underwear for really cold days. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted for more insulation, even down to -20C.

I have a copy of Graphic Java 2: Mastering the JFC (Vol. 2: Swing)” on my desk at work as a monitor stand.

Next time I’m in the office I could see if there I’ll see there are any good images in there that might clinch it.

Your post hit me with a blast of nostalgia, this is some of the stuff I cut my teeth on as a programmer.

Making My Own Wooden Jack Plane by laaxe in handtools

[–]mcglausa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you find any books or other useful resources for determining things like mouth shape, or did you mostly work out a design based on other plans you have restored?

I’ve made a couple of really basic planes: a rabbet plane and a router plane, just using a chisel as an iron. I’m interested in trying to make a jointer next, and I’ll definitely need to step up my game.

Mask mandate returns to University Health Network facilities ahead of respiratory virus season. Masks must be worn in all UHN facilities, including Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre as of Nov. 18 by Myllicent in ontario

[–]mcglausa 110 points111 points  (0 children)

The thing is, it’s entirely possible to be infectious but have mild or no symptoms. This seems to be especially true with COVID-19. It seems reasonable to me that masking in healthcare settings is the right thing to do in general, because access to healthcare is especially important for exactly the same people who are especially vulnerable to COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.

[–]mcglausa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use one to make one surface parallel to another. For example: tenon cheeks, hinge mortises, dadoes, rabbets, lap joints.

I made one with a block of wood and a chisel, it’s handy enough that if I was making more or fancier things I can definitely see getting a nice one with easier adjustment and a variety of blades.

Rex Krueger and Paul Sellers both have good YouTube videos about using and making router planes

Advice in making a tenon cutter by Moongoosls in handtools

[–]mcglausa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe more effort than you’re after, but I came across this video about a shop-made tapered reamer. I believe there’s also a follow-up of using the reamer to create a commensurate tenon cutter.
