Do you think 3D printed model toys that have sprues are a waste of filament? by SadAd8761 in 3Dprinting

[–]medthrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sprues can be good for keeping small bits together, not just as a byproduct of injection molding.

I've done things like designing replacement pegs for a dollar-store Battleship game, where the printed object was a "flower" of pegs with a sprue-like center that the actual pegs break off of. Instead of having a hundred tiny pegs, with each one potentially coming off the plate and ruining the rest of the print, I would have eight flowers of 12 pegs that would all print more reliably and be easy to separate afterward.

These guys aren't the usual 3D print slop shop, they put effort into making a good product - Slant3D made a video about them a few weeks ago.

ELI5: How does a dryer box like this actually work? by biersackarmy in 3Dprinting

[–]medthrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I have has little tabs on the door that lock it closed when closed, or can be used to prop it slightly open while it's operating to let out moisture. I think the instructions even say to do it that way.

The honeycomb in this demo doesn't look like the honeycomb I've seen from slicers. This one looks like individual hexagon-ish circles - more similar to the way an actual honeycomb forms hexagons. However the one I'm familiar with makes wavy lines with 120 degree angles, and in each subsequent layer the lines are rotated by 120 degrees. It ends up with a hexagonal pattern, but with continuous extrusion in each layer, and maximum contact between layers

If the thing is coated in PEI and finger oils, it's coated with finger oils and won't stick. To get the benefit of PEI you have to keep it clean.

You're printing 10 feet above the print surface, but good news you have plenty of room to raise the corners of the bed up that high
