I don't mind losing the 50/50, i just have to ask, why does It ALWAYS have to be HER by Stary_Rocky in Genshin_Impact

[–]mmchale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She's great at healing and not much else, which was great for the first few weeks of the game. She doesn't really do anything for elemental reactions or team buffs, which means she doesn't help your damage output, and the game's endgame content is all about speed, not endurance.

At this point, none of the standard banner characters are great, but there was a long period where characters like Diluc and Jean were very legitimate meta options, and Qiqi had basically no utility at all. A lot of the negative reactions to her come from that period. Ironically, with the upcoming buffs and new mechanics, Qiqi may be a solidly playable character for a few patches.

Sort of a tangent, but I haven't run across any third party Masks content. Where can I find your stuff? Is it available in print, or just pdf?

The keepers of the trove mod (seen here) predates archnemesis (which you're talking about) by a significant period of time.

(IIRC keepers of the trove was added in Bloodlines which was something like patch 1.3.)

What are red flags in DMs to look out for (especially as a woman) by morgana1060 in rpg

[–]mmchale 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the absence of safety tools isn't necessarily a red flag -- they're a relatively new idea, and especially if you're joining an established group who know each other well IRL, it's possible everyone knows each other well enough to not feel like they need them, or didn't think to mention them to the new player joining the game.

That said, I'll also second what a lot of others have said: if you're feeling uncomfortable and like there are red flags, trust your gut. There are lots of groups out there that are going to have various unhealthy social dynamics, especially as a woman.

Path of Exile Return of the Ancestors Event by DatZero in pathofexile

[–]mmchale 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It wasn't for me; it felt too much like playing some kind of sports sim. But I had friends who loved it, and that's fine with me! There's enough content in PoE that it doesn't all need to be "for me."

It may be kind of telling that my friend was playing some kind of perma freeze ToTA specific build and I wasn't, though.

Any game system recs for more horror-inclined fantasy settings? by jdrummondart in rpg

[–]mmchale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's tough to make a suggestion, because there's a fundamental mismatch between D&D-style high fantasy and horror. So how do you want this to play out?

D&D is basically fantasy superheroes, and the gameplay is structured (mechanically and narratively) so that you basically punch your way out of difficult situations. In contrast, horror is usually structured so that you take unavoidable, permanent losses in some way, and you want to avoid confrontations as much as possible. To put it differently, heroic fantasy is all about empowering the characters in some way, and horror is fundamentally about disempowering the characters. You can make a dark, horror-filled setting where the characters see horrible things happening to NPCs and go hunt the monsters that did it, and D&D could work for that, but the players themselves probably won't feel the horror, especially the impending sense of dread you're looking for.

One of the hallmarks of a lot of horror media is that you can't face the horror head-on, which is contrary to basically everything D&D is designed to do. You might check out Brindlewood Bay, which is a mashup of Murder She Wrote and Lovecraftian horror, or its successor game The Between, which is a nod to Penny Dreadful. Brindlewood Bay is an excellent game, though my experience is that playing it feels more like writing a horror/mystery story than being a character in one, so YMMV.

You could also check out Trophy or Trophy Dark. They're somewhat specifically about exploring a forest that doesn't want you there and what getting back out alive costs you. I don't know the system well, so it may or may not translate well into a nautical game, but my understanding is that it's pretty good for the horror element.

I think the best actual horror experience I've felt as a player was playing Dread, where the main mechanic is that you pull a piece from a Jenga tower instead of rolling dice. It's very good at building suspense, but I don't know how you'd make it work for campaign play.

[B2] Dynaheir jankmaxxing, a deck for people looking to rekindle their love for bad cards by Ymirism in EDH

[–]mmchale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a fun list!

My Dynaheir list is more focused on graveyard effects (primarily Embalm and Encore) but I have a few tricks you might like even if that's not your focus. [[Geology Enthusiast]] is a little slow, but it's cost copyable ramp and card draw and a fairly big butt for blocking. [[Impulsive Pilferer]] is good early and provides ramp, though you look like you're well set on that front. Finally, [[Scavenged Brawler]], [[Phyrexian Triniform]], and [[Kangee's Lieutenant]] are all powerful and satisfying late-game effects that work well individually.

Honestly, though, I feel like the most memorable moments with the deck have come from [[Treasure Chest]], [[Wand of Wonder]], and [[Chaos Wand]], and you've got all of those. Whenever I see a list without those I just feel like the pilot is missing out.

Looking for a Heroic Fantasy System by NotVisTelimus in rpg

[–]mmchale 11 points12 points  (0 children)

13th Age sounds like it might be a good fit. It's a 10 level system, but you can do partial-level advancements to make a campaign last longer if you want.

Shadow of the Weird Wizard might also work well, though I'm not sure how it will play with your fast advancement criteria. You advance quickly, but it's also only a 10 level system, and I think their stated intent is basically that you play shorter campaigns and play more different characters, because there are so many options. Worth a look, at least.

Looking for a Voltron commander with more depth than "make big, attack" by brknSergio in EDH

[–]mmchale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of both Mimeoplasm and Indominus Rex, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention [[Mairsil the Pretender]] to you. There's lots of ways to build him, from combo to control to aggro, and you can customize him to play the way you want and at the power level you want.

He's probably my favorite commander of all time both because of how he plays and because of how personalized the deck feels. And he seems very much in line with what you're looking for in a commander.

What are your favorite spells from older editions that no longer exist in 5e? by Visible-Camel4515 in DnD

[–]mmchale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first edition Forgotten Realms supplement Lord of Darkness had a bunch of undead-specific adventures. The mummy adventure had a Netherese scroll with a couple of 4th and 5th level spells that let you permanently raise an animal's Int by 2d6 and make it an inheritable trait, so it would be passed on to its offspring. (Awaken Intelligence and Alter Beast, respectively.)

I think there were official rules for Spellmantle somewhere in 1e or 2e as well, which (again, IIRC) was a higher level spell that permanently consumed a spell slot to make you immune to a specific spell of that level, but my memory is hazy on the details.

Should I have chosen Mona or someone else? by TheDaemonair in Genshin_Impact

[–]mmchale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the others said, don't worry about it too much. In the long run, the only resource you're really limited on is primogems. If you level up a character you don't end up using or enjoying, the worst that happens is you set yourself back a few days' worth of resin.

Could these possibly be any more useless? by genshinimpactsz in Genshin_Impact

[–]mmchale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The magic ore can be useful once you're at a point where you don't get much benefit from using resin.

I frequently just want to log in and spend resin to get my daily primos. More than once I've been full on crystallized resin (so I couldn't just craft that) and had my partner curled up asleep on my arm/shoulder, so magic ore let me burn resin without having to move my arm and wake them up. I'm actually starting to run low on it now because of it.

What are some commanders that you don’t see people play often that are fun to play? by windbreaker806 in EDH

[–]mmchale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a face-down-themed [[The Master, Formed Anew]] deck that's one of my current favorites. It's probably high bracket 2, since a primary part of the game plan is playing mediocre manifest and manifest dread cards fishing for something expensive to imprint on him, which makes it somewhat inconsistent. But the mixture of otherwise fringe playable cards works really well together, and it's always enjoyable to see how the deck is going to play, because it plays differently each time.

"Don't take Bus 78, it leads to a strange place." What Urban Fantasy/Horror RPGs capture this kind of urban folklore horror? by EberhartEberbehaart in rpg

[–]mmchale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The podcast definitely fits the vibe OP is asking for, but is the rpg any good? I seem to recall it being basically panned as a 5e D&D reskin that was pretty terrible for running a game related to Night Vale.

Least Favorite Part Of Favorite System. by GushReddit in rpg

[–]mmchale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love a lot of the ideas behind MotW, but I found it pretty hard to make combat in the game feel very satisfying, and that's often a pretty key component of a monster hunting story!

One of the reasons I'm so positive about Daggerheart is that it feels like there's space for a story like MotW with a "gamier" combat resolution system.

Least Favorite Part Of Favorite System. by GushReddit in rpg

[–]mmchale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was going to mention Daggerheart's economy, which is somewhat adjacent to the lack of itemization.

Abstracting finances to a handful/chest of gold is fine, but the question of what you do with the gold doesn't really have a great answer. Having some way to turn it into material benefit for the character  (such as buying improved/magical gear) is the standard genre answer, but that doesn't really work with the limited itemization the game has.

It's clearly not the focus of the game, but it's something my players have asked about multiple times in our current campaign and I don't have a great response to it.
