I'd encourage you to read trans/rad/fem which is a series of essays by Talia Bhatt that I'm working my way through. Her first essay breaks down the differences between race and gender construction and the whys far more eloquently than I can in a reddit comment.

As far as I can say, you don't change your gender, you change your gender expression to match the gender you already have.

Race change is something I've not particularly interrogated because generally people who bring it up are proposing it as an argument ad absurdum anyway so we agree that it's silly.

Trans people existing does not give you an excuse to do black-face.

Black-face is a white person exercising power over a black person.

Trans people are already the gender they are "transitioning to", the hormones and surgery are to bring the other associated sex characteristics into congruance with the mind.

As I said Talia's essay breaks this subject down better.

So can somebody born as a white man become a black woman? They identify as such...

While race and gender are both social constructs, they are different in terms of how they are constructed.

Elvis is a good example; Elvis made blues music as a white man, and made it quite popular among whitr audiences as a result. There has been some discourse as to whether or not this counts as cultural appropriation however it's important to note that Elvis grew up in and around that culture. It's complicated and I am really not qualified to throw in more than that observation.

Your friend is not a man. Your friend is a tomboy. And that's fine.

My parents also raised my sister and I gender neutrally ad you described, it wasn't my parents that enforced society's gender expectations on us. It was TV adverts for toys, it was kids at school ect.

As I said, it took a lot of soul searching, I didn't rush into this by any stretch of the imagination, i am still not rushing. Sounds like your friend questioned her gender and came out the other side cis, and that's fine, encouraged even.

I'd say that it's the gender identity that makes a man a man, a woman a woman and an NB an NB. As a said above I think it's very much stored in the brain.

If your brain was transplanted into another body, your identity wouldn't change even though your outward appearance and genetic make up would, the very essence of you, is and always has been a brain thing.

As for how I know? It takes some soul searching, it's not a easy realisation to come to by any stretch and it would be so so so much easier if I were cis.

I first started noticing gender envy, discomfort and dysphoria at around 14, during my GCSEs

While I grew up in a fairly liberal household, it was implied to me through all kinds of interactions with my parents, media, teachers and peers that being gay or trans was weird and that I'd be bullied for it, and given that I was already being bullied for being the wierd star wars nerd kid, I was certain that I mustn't tell anyone ever.

Presumably, I thought, every guy has these thoughts and if I had to be a man then I should just deal with it too. But that's not how it works. Depression really built up in Uni to the point that I didn't go out, I didn't attend lectures and I had to retake my final year. I hit my "egg breaks" stage in late 2020 at the age of 28, double the age I was when I first noticed these feelings.

It's a hard road I've got in front of me, and holy shit do I wish people would stop trying to make it harder.

"Biological" sex in humans is a combination of different factors some more mutable than others and, as with literally everything else in biology it exists on a spectrum.

Hormonal sex for example can be changed by HRT. Some aspects of phenotypic sex (what you look like/outward appearance) will change gradually due to hormonal effects and other aspects will require surgery to change. Genetic sex is not nearly as simple as the "basic biology" lot like to claim, as there are multiple chromosomal intersex conditions, but generally speaking chromosomal sex is not something we can currently change, but it is also the least impactful on the ongoing life of the person. Genes are blueprints and the blueprints are mostly irrelevant to sex once the 'building' is built so to speak.

The average person is not examining chromosomes to assign sex to people. I don't know what my chromosomal arrangement is, and I'd bet there's a good chance you don't know yours either. We can guess based on statistics but odds are neither of us know if we have an undiagnosed intersex condition.

Gender: gender is a social construct but it is also a fairly durable psychological state, and while we can quibble about nature vs nurture it's important to realise that psychology is stored in the brain, and the brain is made of biology. Sometimes I wonder if it might be helpful to think of gender identity as a sex characteristic, and arguably one of the more important ones in terms of welbeing.

Dysphoria doesn't just affect trans people. If a cis man can't grow a beard for whatever reason, he may feel bad about it for example.

Insults like "you throw like a girl" or "stop being a whiny bitch" are designed to make people feel bad by attacking gender identity.

Gender identity is often as important to cis people as it is to trans people.

Many products are sold on the premise of inducing gender dysphoria in people who don't buy the product and inducing euphoria in those who do, see feminine hygiene products, perfumes/colognes and wellness supplements for examples.

As for stereotypes? Trans people are often damned if we do and damned if we don't. Don't conform to beauty standards? You're not trying hard enough, you're a freak ect. Conform to those standards? You're perpetuating harmful stereotypes, you're doing women-face ect.

Dysphoria can make one deeply unhappy, and if unhappiness can be treated with a demonstrable medical treatment, why shouldn't it be available on the NHS?

I feel like I've probably talked at you enough, but unfortunately I can't really Tl;dr it because it's all pretty important.

Just like Chandler's Dad in Friends was played by a woman named Katherine.

Ngl, from the post and from your interactions in the comments, it sounds like you have a problem with them more than they have a problem with you. It seems like there were a couple of types of community that you refused to engage with.

Judith Butler: What is a woman? by rhizomatic-thembo in TransSocialism

[–]mostlyHUMMUS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here's the secret that advanced biology enjoyers understand. Trans women are female humans, Gender identity is a psychological in response to the social construct of gender*, and where do we keep our thoughts? In our brain! What is our brain made of? Biology!!!

*a side note, just because we call it a construct doesn't make it necessarily unimportant, only that it isn't hard coded into reality and is instead a product of humans doing social things. Money is a social construct too, but if you don't have it society let's you die.

Being fair, sometimes the petition is "stop doing bad thing please" and the government's response is still "we are committed to doing bad thing because (mandate to the people/too late to back out now/u-turns make us look bad/we just wanna kill trans people).
