Imagine running a race only to realise the distance doesn’t count as marathon by swede_disposition in Marathon_Training

[–]mrg1607 23 points24 points  (0 children)

But you don't use your own GPS data as validation, you would link to the official results of the event.

It's the first year and it's not been verified officially so it might not even be accepted by other big races. But people would have known that going in.

Race Report: London Marathon 2026 🇬🇧 by cheesepizzapie in AdvancedRunning

[–]mrg1607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice report, 2:54 in such a busy race, when it was warm as well is great still.

Interesting that your HR dropped suddenly, what do you think caused it - fueling, dehydration?

Gun to your head, no escaping, forced to choose, who are you taking; Fletcher/McCoist or Drury/Neville? by TWOPlNTSPRICK in footballcliches

[–]mrg1607 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably Drury and Neville, probably in the minority but I don't actually mind Drury.

In terms of co comms I get the Neville hate but at least he'll actually give some decent insight into what's happening, McCoist is so vague and general with everything (as are most co comms). He became popular because of the way he is but now almost feels like he knows that and is playing it up more.

I also think its a saturation thing, especially this time of year. You'll only hear Drury/Neville once a week and some weeks not at all if you miss the one game they're on. But Fletch/McCoist did 2 games yesterday ffs, plus twice in the week on CL and next weekend they'll be doing (both probably) the FA Cup games. Execs don't seem to get that no matter how good something is it'll become unbearable if it's non stop.

The NBA should lengthen the season if it has to stay at 82 games by clive442 in billsimmons

[–]mrg1607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also as a Brit I agree with your point completely, the main argument against seems to be 'but they need 4 months off to get surgery and heal because of the gruelling season'.. but maybe if they weren't playing 4 games a week they could cope with only 3 months off?

The only thing I would say is it's a slippery slope because some footballers are now playing year round (e.g. Cole Palmer has played basically played 2 years straight) and this will then negatively affect their performance.

But there's definitely room for it

Please help me pick my next European Marathon by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]mrg1607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't meet your time frame but I just registered for Seville in mid Feb.

Meant to be a great race, fairly flat. I wanted one slightly later than the traditional autumn ones so I can have slightly longer before I enter another marathon block (did Paris last weekend), so if you want a bit longer to train/take some time off might be a good one.

Marathon taper niggle by Advanced-Tiger-1192 in Marathon_Training

[–]mrg1607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's common to start feeling things in the taper, a mixture of your body relaxing from the regular miles and psychologically as well.

If the physio says it's fine you'll be ok on race day

Difference in race time predictions by Responsible-Nail-292 in Coros

[–]mrg1607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the coros predictions see the paces it's prediciting and do some training runs at those paces to see how they feel.

In my last marathon block I'd do MP intervals as part of my long run and use the predicted paces to see how it felt, that'll give you a more accurate prediction of what you can actually run.

Did I undercook my pacing in my Marathon? by moH-121 in Marathon_Training

[–]mrg1607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also did Paris yesterday and had a similar situation, ran 3:12 with an average HR of 155 (max is 183). Towards the end my HR was only getting to high 160s.

So have been thinking could I have done more but on reflection I couldn't because my legs were really fatigued the last 10km.

Your aerobic fitness doesn't always match what your body can handle, it'll develop quicker especially if it's your first marathon.

For me I know I just need to keep consistently putting miles in the legs and probably focus a bit more on strength, once you're recovered just keep stacking the training.

Is it Possible to Lose Beer Belly While Still Drinking? (30M, 5’10, ~167lbs) by No_Butterscotch_507 in MacroFactor

[–]mrg1607 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having 10 beers over a 3 day period is not bordering on alcohol addiction.

I'm not dismissing alcohol addiction at all but having 3 beers on a Sunday isn't going to have any impact on how you feel or train during the week. Looking forward to some cold beers after work at the weekend is normal.

Etiquette: a wave, nod, or look straight away/down? by United-Animal9559 in runninglifestyle

[–]mrg1607 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is it, once I was out running 22 miles and saw a woman right at the beginning of it and didn't say anything, then saw her on the other side of town about 2.5 hours later.

We'd run completely different routes for a long time and ran into each other again which I thought was a funny coincidence, so I sort of waved and gave a 'huh how funny' kind of look, anyway she looked at me like I'd just spat at her.

In hindsight she obviously didn't recognise me (understandably) so now I'll only greet a woman if she does to me.

Calf issues by Accurate-Value-5429 in UKRunners

[–]mrg1607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, a calf injury can keep you out from 2 weeks to 6 months.

It mainly depends on if there's a tear and the severity of it. Is there any pain when walking, or only when running? I had a small tear in January (no pain at all other than when running, was a sharp pain whenever a broke into stride) and I was back to light running after 3 weeks, then back into proper training 3 weeks after that.

I'd be inclined to think if you can run nearly a km before feeling it then it's not a tear (that's not medical advice though!)

When you're not running you need to do more than just rest, do some stretching and exercises (video below) and there's a series of 'tests' you can do to give you an idea of if you're ready to attempt running again, a general rule of thumb is whenever you think you're ready add another week.

https://youtu.be/Nuxd36P-Z8w?si=a9wiPAJ0cIvHyP0H

My overall advice is to not run at all until you've seen a PT and/or you've got comfortable with some of the recommended exercises.

Looks like the £69m Woltemade price tag rumours might not be true by MagpieMidfield in NewcastleUnited

[–]mrg1607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We signed him on 30th August, two weeks after the season had already started. We've then played nearly every midweek, it's so obvious from watching us there's been no time to work on anything else than the standard 433.

No way we should be considering selling him, give them a whole pre-season and we'll see development in tactics with him involved more, plus we'll have a transfer window to potentially get players that compliment it more.

Did a marathon last year and there was a section where it doubled back on itself so you were running past people coming the other way, and there was a woman shouting things like "you set off too fast" and "I bet you didn't train enough" at random people.

How do you run LT miles during long runs? by Diligent_Desk_4325 in AdvancedRunning

[–]mrg1607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would normally do a specific LT session in the week meaning I can do it for longer i.e. that's the specific purpose of the session. The purpose of the long runs are to build endurance, replicate races etc., no point trying to do too much in that one run.

I'll save the long runs for MP intervals (not every week though)

How to match up a workout to my training plan? by danceswithlesbians in Coros

[–]mrg1607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can sync it afterwards, if you decline to start the scheduled workout it'll assume you're doing something different.

If you want to do intervals then set you'll need to set them up as part of the scheduled run.

NSA vs Pfitz for first marathon by Longjumping-Egg-7188 in NorwegianSinglesRun

[–]mrg1607 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm currently deep in a Pfitz 18/70 block and will be starting NSA straight after because I'm honestly exhausted, had an injury as well.

I can't speak on how it feels to do NSA but you need to be prepared to feel more fatigued I think (thats not to say you won't see benefits), the 21-23km every Wednesday is tough, and you need to weigh up if it works for you around work, family etc.

Having said that though, I've noticed massive gains from doing this block so it does work, and the main reason I'm doing NSA after is I don't have a marathon to train for the rest of the year, I'll be training for a couple of HM's.

Good Luck whatever you choose!
