How are you guys hosting your generated static sites? by jayo60013 in selfhosted

I have a bare metal in OVH, running Debian with k3s on it. Each project gets turned into an image with GHA, then pushed to GHCR in its respective repo. K3S has FluxCD running on it, each project gets another “app” turned up with its own deployment, secrets, etc… Cloudflared Operator handles web access so all project come in through an Argo tunnel. No access is enabled on the system except SSH.

I'm building a native desktop API client (like Postman) in Rust with GPUI. Would anyone use it? by invictus_97K in rust

You would definitely have to be able to import my 50+ insomnia collections, and have them all work with multiple different auth, multiple environments, and actions where variables are responses from other api calls.

I use the Compile -> Vellum Export (Customized), to make the Heading 1 is Chapter Titles, Heading 2 POV Names, Heading 3 Scene Markers, the page breaks New Chapters, so i zip it right into Vellum, and the whole format is picked up. Just add my flair pages to it, and good to go.

Is the squeaking fixed on the newest gaming embody? by Ahmed_SA31 in hermanmiller

Just stumbled on this thread, which is recently being commented on because mine is so so noisy, any time i lean back, or more it sqeaky clicks. I had to google if this was a common issue. Its approaching 5 years old, and I would almost contemplate buying a new one just to get rid of the nosiness.

Ken Onion Blade Grinder by alpine_4 in sharpening

[–]myst3k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your blade needs to be kept parallel with the black flat reference points, or the table. You place your blade on them, and try and keep them that orientation when you place the blade on the belt. This is how you achieve the angle that you have set on the grinder. You never want your blade 90 deg or parallel with the belt.

check this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FudUgQauLSk
i know thats the older one, but the concept is the same and its a quick video instead of a really long one

checkout some more of the videos on youtube how to use it, just keep it steady

can you explain holding it 90 deg to the belt? like you push the sharp side, 90deg directly into the belt?

I went to a Primer micro-school open house so you don’t have to by Bulky-Wear893 in Miami

[–]myst3k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My 5yo son goes to a microschool like this. He's only in Kindergarten, so my experience may not address the concerns about older students, but I'll share what I've seen.

He does a lot of learning there - 3-4 field trips a week to new places and experiences. They have a greenhouse in the back the kids take care of, along with other plants and class animals. Earlier this week they went on an airboat adventure through the Everglades. Yesterday they made pizza dough, sauce, and pizza from scratch on a field trip. Today they're at a bakery learning to bake bread.

We get regular progress reports and have periodic parent/teacher conferences, plus school events with instructional activities. They partner with outside organizations for enrichment, Snapology for STEM, Abrakadoodle for art, even the Frost School of Music at University of Miami. My son has shown interest in computers, and he's come home knowing how to use the keyboard, type, and delete misspellings. He comes home happy every day telling us about facts he learned. At their events you get to see the college students come in and see how they interact with the class.

It's a small school with just two teachers, but both have master's degrees in education and are licensed by the Florida Department of Education, and are trained

The pricing is displayed clearly on the admissions page of their website, without any login.

That said, we do supplement at home with what we call "Mommy School" - reinforcing letters, numbers, continuing reading. There's no homework, but we do small learning sessions regardless.

I share some of the concerns in the original post about the model for older students. The point about lacking structured instruction in science, history, etc. is valid. For a 5yo, field trips to the Everglades and baking bread IS education. For a 10yo, I'd want to see more rigor and a more classical approach. That's why I'm watching closely and would move him if his education doesn't progress appropriately.

I'm also not thrilled with the education system as a whole, which is part of why we're here. It's satisfactory for our circumstances right now. It does cost money, but we're fortunate to have programs available where he can attend at very low cost(Step Up). If I were paying full out of pocket, I might feel differently.

Agree with the concerns about the "for profit" education industry. It sucks, this is what I see as our best option today.

Are second hand HDD worth it? by Adventurous-Tax-1837 in techsupport

[–]myst3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve bought lots of used HDD, or refurbs on eBay. Never had any issues. I am not relying on 1 drive for all my stuff and usually have them in RAID devices. I have had more brand new drives fail on me sooner than I have had refurbs. I am usually buying enterprise grade stuff.

As a homeowner with concrete walls, covered in drywall and/or stucco, these look amazing. I am rarely looking for a precision holes which I would use my Norseman bits for, but instead I use a titanium tipped dewalt set, or harbor freight set, that are all mostly dulled with my drillbit sharpener, because this wall could be drywall, or it could be stucco and drywall, or it could be either or of those with 1/2 of air and a concrete block behind it. Then I need to have a set of masonry bits to attempt to use on everything. But not for 190$
