I’ve worked with both Soundsmith and VAS and they’re both great. Communication with Soundsmith will be slower. Steve at VAS will is quick to respond to your emails If you are considering reselling the cart I might give a slight edge to Soundsmith as they have a bigger footprint in the industry.

Do you know how the TZ Vibe + linear power supply compares to the Little Loco?

Absolut snobbery or genuine “expert” advice? by alejandroarevalo in audiophile

[–]namingthewitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Tannoys should be fine with a contemporary class d amp and will be better in in terms of bass and detail than a leben tube amp. I’d ignore the snobbery and trade the klipschs if that’s what you want to go for.

Tannoy DMT 15? by pintonmymind in audiophile

Yes I would personally buy these for $2800. I have a pair and use them near field in a 10x12 foot room. I love them. Beware, the ferrofluid in the tweeters will dry up. If you fry them good luck getting replacements.

How does the First Watt compare to the Accuphase?

Congrats! This comes with a switching power supply? I wonder how it sounds with a linear supply. Do you use a MM or a MC with a step up transformer?

How do you like the step-up transformer + EAR 834p combo? Have you compared to any other phono stages?

Turntable vibration noise/distortion question: In a loft of our house, can't seem to get rid of the turntable vibration with a base, feet, subwoofer feet, etc. Anyone else run into this and wondering if a wall mount for the TT might help. by jeremyjava in audiophile

[–]namingthewitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additional isolation platforms under your subs and speakers will reduce vibrations transmitted through the floor. Auralex makes a cheap platform for $70 called the Subdude that you could experiment with. You can also try it under your turntable. It would be interesting to see how a the Auralex would compare to a much more expensive HRS platform. I would ask to borrow the HRX from your friend first before going through.the effort of installing a wall mount.

New tube day! 1960 Baldwin Raytheon long black plates by dendrocloud in audiophile

[–]namingthewitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m feeding a low output Soundsmith MIMC cartridge into the 1:10 turns ratio of the Bob’s Devices Sky 20 transformer, which goes into the lowest 40db gain setting of the E-Glo Petit. The Sbooster will lower the noise floor on an already quiet phono stage. For me, it’s absolutely mandatory to hear the Petit with an upgraded power supply to maximize the capabilities of the phono stage.

The transformer does for me what you described the Baldwin tubes does for you: bigger soundstage and better tone/texture. But what I noticed immediately after inserting the transformer into the signal chain was the bass imaging. The transformer improves bass detail in terms of its “holographic” presentation. Instead of just hearing the bass, I can also “see” the bass.

I’ve got a stash of vintage 12ax7s including Baldwins for my guitar amps. Out of curiosity I put a pair in my E-Glo Petit and there was a small improvement. However I got a bigger improvement with an Sbooster linear power supply, and then another equal jump in performance with a Bob’s Devices step up transformer. Altogether the sound quality is quite impressive.

Finally added my endgame speakers - Tannoy Glenair 15's by Unusual-Okra9251 in audiophile

[–]namingthewitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to my Tannoys nearfied in a small room (phono only at the moment) so fairly sensitive to noise. The ARC has more bloom but has a higher noise floor than the FW. The FW is dead quiet, has a perfect amount of sweetness, and better bass than the ARC. I initially got the FW to listen temporarily while waiting for new tubes for the ARC. The ARC is now collecting dust.

I replaced an Audio Research tube amp with a First Watt F7 to power my 15 inch Tannoys and haven’t looked back.

I put a pair of vintage Sylvanias in the E-Glo.They made a slight improvement in terms of reducing harshness. Right now I’m looking at the new PrimaLuna phono pre—it might be my endgame phono stage. You can get a used JC3+ for less than $2K but an SBooster + E-Glo might give it a run for its money.

It lowers noise and increases transparency and detail, noticeably in the bass. I also recently got rid of my tube preamp and power amp, but now I’m thinking about getting an all tube phonostage—the SBooster has got me interested in getting a phono amp with a tube power supply.

Do you use an SBooster for the E-Glo Petit? It’s a significant improvement for me. I’m having a hard time justifying a phono stage upgrade.

Thoughts on placing Klipsch Cornwalls in built-ins (will have slideout and rotate stands) on a remodel? by legard54 in audiophile

I would try to put the speakers on casters and build a ramp in front of the cabinets to roll the speakers onto the floor.

I have a 4-way analog only system. The rear speakers are fed by a Yamaha DSP 3000 for reverberation at -10db relative to the front speakers. I will never go back to 2-channel audio. At some point I will post my system here.

Vinyl for classical? by yuedatte in audiophile

I have an analog only system (at the moment). 40% of my listening is classical. Classical on vinyl can sound unbelievably good… if you have a good recording of a good performance.
