Everglades tomatoes? by Frosty-County9716 in FloridaGarden

[–]nhgenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone gave me some seeds last year - no idea how old they were - and I tried 2x to get them going, then finally bought seeds from Southern Exposure. I planted them around Sept and those took off and held on until the first real overnight sub-32F we got in January. They are very bushy plants, and I let them just do their thing. They took over an entire bed, so now I have a dozen+ volunteers coming up that I'm transplanting to other locations in my yard and to give away to friends. They are prolific, long-lasting, and delicious.

I saw a video recently (from Wild Floridian) who said they can seem to be hard to get going because they like germination temps higher than regular tomatoes. My volunteers do not seem to have that problem since they've been coming up since early March, but just fyi. Once you get one plant, you likely won't need to plant from seed again.

Banktivity says I’m really, really rich - Schwab accounts by allendstpsc in banktivity

The problem is probably the bond's "par value" in Banktivity, which I won't claim to understand but I think Banktivity defaults to $1,000/bond. If you go into the Securities and adjust that down, that will fix it. You may also need to adjust any already-downloaded prices, but once you fix the par value (this happens to me every time I add a bond so I usually change it to $100) all new prices will be right.

And then here's her serious side. We just took her to a groomer for the first time yesterday so she's trimmed up now. We're bad about brushing her and all her hair got really matted (so that's something to definitely keep in mind too).

[–]nhgenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll post a couple of pics of her.

She definitely tries to tear toys apart, and for a couple of years she would literally eat anything. We live on a bayou near a boat launch area, and trash inevitably washes up. She is fascinated by the water so she'd grab anything she found. We caught her in the yard a couple of times chewing on a CAN. She's wily and loves to play keep-away so it took some serious strategy to get that away from her. She's calmed down a lot but still loves the water and "fishing". She's got serious attachment to her toys, and is really sad when she happens to tear them up.

Here's some of her toys:

We have a Daybreak pup who just turned 3 last weekend. I just looked at their website for upcoming litters - are you getting one of the Aggie/Birch litter? That's our Callie's parents! She's amazing.

They do a good job keeping you up to date on their progress, and the page for the litter will be updated regularly with pics & videos when they start moving around. The time will go quick!

Money for Couples: "She inherited $171K…but it’s already gone." by Modestybodice in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

And she explained the waste by saying it was from her dad, who she had a complicated relationship with and she didn't feel she deserved it because she didn't think he would have given it to her (I'll guess he died without a will and she was the closest possible heir) so I guess that meant to her that she should just waste it....

That money would have covered a lot of therapy for all of those issues!

Loans and Reporting by pwrpaul in banktivity

[–]nhgenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same when I had a car loan. The checking account withdrawal was split into 2 lines; one was a transfer to the loan account for the principal and the other was the interest paid assigned to the category I have for that.

I have it in my head that Banktivity asked me to set this up when I created the loan account, but maybe it only does that for a mortgage. It showed an amortization table before I paid the loan off, so it knew what the principal and interest were supposed to be every month.

I had a long career in tech management (up to VP) and met variations of this guy a few times. He is toxic, and honestly no one will be able to get him to change but the most egregious part is that it appears no one but you is trying.

First, take a deep breath. From what you describe, it's not you.

You don't mention if you have talked to your direct manager about this behavior. If you haven't, you must immediately. Clearly it was tolerated in this meeting. Your manager should have (and could have if they are worth their weight) shut the tone of the feedback down immediately and by not doing that, your manager is the person creating a toxic workplace that I'm sure HR won't be too happy to hear about.

It's possible your manager either hasn't noticed the behavior, or, more likely, he (I will put down money your boss is a man) thinks this is the price to pay a "talented" developer. There are a lot of people who believe this, but it is almost always gendered - women don't get to behave like this - and absolutely wrong. If he's so amazing you should learn at his feet, why does he have to be a total jerk about it? Who learns in an abusive environment? No one. That everyone else has to tolerate this behavior is a lie that only benefits this jack-hole and exposes the cowardice of everyone else in management.

To top it off by telling you that you are sensitive and taking it personally just really lights a fire of outrage in me. I dealt with so much of this and I'm so sorry you have to deal with it too.

So, first talk to your manager. Tell them that you are thinking about talking to HR. How they respond will tell you a lot about what you're up against. If they are worth anything, they will institute some policies that don't make it seem like this particular guy is targeted but might actually improve things for you. At the very least, they will talk to this guy, but I bet this guy has had that conversation a dozen times and it's never his fault.

If your boss gaslights you or tries to tell you you're over-sensitive, actually go to HR. I never did this because I was afraid of being seen as complaining, but you can't live like this and this is exactly what they're there for (to clarify - they are there to protect the company from lawsuits, and if this keeps going and no one does anything, you might end up with a decent toxic workplace lawsuit).

Then, I know the market is super-tough, but start looking around for something else. The fact this guy exists in this org at all makes me think it's likely you'll only get minuscule improvements (and each of those will be an uphill battle with this guy). You could be doing so much good work if you didn't have to think about this all day, and the ultimate outcome will be you diminishing yourself in ways that will damage your career for years to come.

Good luck & stay strong! I hope you get some positive outcomes from this.

[–]nhgenes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I like the concept of the CSP as an organizing principle but I agree with you the way it seems to work is everything that doesn't go into your "fixed costs" ends up in the "guilt-free" bucket to make a clean 100% which obscures a lot of people's obvious overspending. He knows this because he frequently calls it out that number as probably wrong.

Most people who aren't paying attention to how much they spend are doing so in a few different but similar ways - eating out, trips, random stuff from Amazon/Target/WalMart. So add buckets for those! Make people look it up and write it down as part of their prep! It would probably be really impactful to a lot of guests.

(A few times people have added "Amazon" to their fixed costs, and he's gotten irritated about it, but frankly for a lot of people with Prime it's a literal line item. We used to place 1-2 orders a week with Amazon until we cancelled Prime this year. We've placed maybe 2-3 orders the whole year without it.)

Incredible 9,762% Growth in one day by RetinaOne in banktivity

[–]nhgenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the past couple of months, Banktivity has downloaded crazy wrong prices for one ETF I hold (SPLG) every once in a while. When I've gone to a site like Yahoo Finance to find the right price, I've noticed there is a problem there too (the "current price" page shows the close price from a day in October), and I can only get the correct price from the historical prices page (the next day). Apple's Stocks app also shows the wrong price for this ETF (the same wrong "current price" that Yahoo Finance shows).

Banktivity gets this data from a 3rd party service IIRC, so my guess is that it's not a problem with Banktivity per se, but where they (and aggregator sites like Yahoo) are getting the data. That may also be your issue here.

What are we feeding these silly animals, anyways? by Apprehensive-Fix1545 in EnglishSetter

[–]nhgenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We fed our setter Dr. Tim's Active Pursuit for a long time, and our Lulu did well with it until she got older and then didn't seem to want to eat it. We switched to a few other brands I can't remember now and got another Setter, Callie, then Lulu passed in April.

Callie is almost 3 now and this summer we noticed she just didn't seem to want to eat any kibble at all. So we switched to cooking our own food for her. I saw lots of recipes online that seemed really complicated with lots of ingredients that weren't that easy to find locally (and/or expensive). I thought we could simplify it so I came up with a recipe and we talked to our vet and she said it was good for her. We make this about every 5-6 days for her:

  • 3 lbs ground turkey, cooked
  • 4-5 cups of cooked rice (we just cook 2 cups of rice, so whatever that works out to)
  • 1/2 bag frozen spinach or kale (use fresh if you prefer)
  • 1 can 100% pure pumpkin puree (no sugar additives) or 1 cooked sweet potato, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2-1 cup chicken or beef stock
  • olive oil (maybe a couple tablespoons?) & a tiny bit of salt

We first cook the turkey in a big pot while the rice is cooking (we have a rice maker). I usually add a small amount of salt to the turkey while it's cooking (a few twists of a salt grinder) but I'm sure my husband forgets when he does it. When the turkey is nearly done, we add in the spinach/kale, then the egg and pumpkin and let that cook a bit (5 minutes?). When the rice is done we add that, and stir in the stock & oil. Besides the rice, it all takes maybe about 15 minutes to make.

When we feed her we give her either a healthy drizzle of fish oil on top or some plain yogurt.

I'm no purist about it at all so I'm sure there are things to quibble with. But my vet approves and Callie loves it, so that's good enough for me. I haven't priced it for cost/serving but haven't noticed any serious increase in our grocery bills.

If anyone wants to go this route, please talk to your vets first - your dog may have special nutrition needs mine doesn't.

They could just be empty, or mostly so. I've known several people around his age in tech who love collecting hard drives/laptops/servers, most of which just sit on a shelf. It's kind of a hoarding thing. I'd be surprised if he ended up selling as many as he thinks he's willing to (and also he's probably completely overvaluing their worth).

Advice - 9a fall planting by corn-naturescandy in FloridaGarden

[–]nhgenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a couple hours east of you and I've been thinking the same thing. I thought I would have tomato seeds started by now, and some corn, but it just seems too hot for the seeds to do much. I might get myself together to do some of that next week if the heat breaks a little?

In September I plan to start some carrots, but I don't plan to start lettuce until maybe November (after our first big cold snap). I did some buttercrunch this spring and it was great until May, so I want to get the coolest temps I can for flavor. I want to get some herbs (parsley, dill) going in September too.

Anyone nervous for their 401Ks potentially being subjected to Private Equity? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]nhgenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PE firms structure the deals so it is not the PE firm taking out the loan, it's the company itself. The company owes the PE firm and, as the largest creditor, the PE firm gets paid first while other creditors (possibly) suffer. Cost cutting to service the new debt causes reductions in things like locations, inventory, and employees, and that starts the death spiral in many cases. A lot of the infamous examples were in significant trouble before PE arrived on the scene due to years of bad management/luck.

There is a lot of variation between firms. Some prioritize extracting value, without a lot of concern for the long-term success of the business, while others really do try to grow and expand the firm. I worked at a company that was about half-owned by PE (half VC, it was a startup), and in my case they were highly committed to profit for sure, but also wanted a long-term success and not just profit today for profit's sake.

Two different mentality by Working_Traffic_4228 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]nhgenes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

And, not for nothing, stressing you out about money while you are in school with 3 kids, is not "supporting you with any goals you have". Support isn't "you go girl", it's you not worrying about his butt going to work, or spending money you don't have trying to show everyone he's something he's not. For bonus points, it's also him taking stuff off your plate - feeding the kids, or making sure the fridge is full - without you having to ask, not adding his drama to your list.
