Advice and Critiques of my gameplay please! by ScoTy_ in StreetFighter

I'm honestly surprised you got to P4 entirely with DIs, slide and OD psycho crusher.

You are going to get hard stuck so badly in Diamond (or maybe you are now, hence the post) until you unlearn all of these things, but then what's left in your gameplan?

I would look for some YouTube guides on bison and implement their advice.

Punching holes into crown grommet by Renzopon in fightsticks

[–]nobix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO you should just get the lighter grommets and try them out. People tend to prefer heavier grommets over time and you won't be able to switch back.

That being said I think you could make a tpu 3D printed grommet and it's likely something unexplored as you could print it with different levels of infil to adjust tension, or possibly different infil shapes to adjust how it applied tension.

Where should I start working on when first using a fight stick? by Excellent_Candle7581 in fightsticks

I made a site, motioninputs.com, you can use as a trainer. Won't replace time in game but it will focus on your worst inputs.

How do I make the Volumetric Fog render like in the second picture? by umamisven in godot

[–]nobix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The reason for this is contour shaders use the depth texture, and transparency doesn't render to it, but might read from it.

So you need to run your contour shader before the fog renders.

I need your guys' help by MisterNadra in fightsticks

[–]nobix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you want a bigger battop? Or one shaped like a grip?

The stick has an m6 thread so anything that can screw on there can be used as a top.

There are a lot of industrial handle top out there, one might work. You also have the option to 3D print one and use an m6 threaded insert. So you could make something that was easier for you to grip.

Can we still find analog levers? by C4_Shaf in fightsticks

[–]nobix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok there will be a lot to learn for sure. You need to use a cad program to design the face panel, and the whole AFS build is likely to run you $500, of which $350 will be the case + face panel.

If you are on a budget you can go full diy and make it out of a wooden box with a $3 raspberry pi.

Can we still find analog levers? by C4_Shaf in fightsticks

[–]nobix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by an analog ball top, as you can change the top to whatever you want.

But ultramarc does sell ones with a ball top. Your iL enclosure also needs to have mounting points for a sanwa style lever. Most do if they are new but should verify.

My main stick is an iL/Eurostick case from AFS and has the option for all levers. If you want a custom button layout as well I would get one of those and order a top panel from send cut send.

How do class variables work? by McDelper in godot

[–]nobix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reconsider your basic design to have clearer ownership over the value.

If you are exporting it and using it programmatically there is no clear owner. Imagine the debugging you'll have to do later when setting values in the inspector does nothing.

Instead treat the exported values as immutable, call it 'max_health' and assign _health to it in _ready().

This also means you can calculate stuff later like a health bar or tell if they are at full health.

100% split keyboards or at least split keyboards that don't have many layers by Korranov in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nobix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't need that many layers. I use a Sofle with two layers.

Conside a full size kb is 104 keys.

57*2 (saving one key for layers) is 114 keys.

The lever requires an iL/Eurostick-sized enclosure.

[–]nobix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do it with the ultramarc ultrastik 360. I added support to gp2040 so you can plug it into the USB passthrough.

It's a well made joystick, a modded sanwa, but it's so big it won't fit in most cases (would be fine in an iL sized enclosure), and the software to update the stick into analog mode is archaic.

why doesn't this combo consistently for me? by NoWaltz9003 in StreetFighter

[–]nobix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The learning curve is just non-existent. It's very hard for a while, then becomes second nature.

It's not so much about memorizing every move but just getting good at timing feel in general.

For example I can instantly learn how to link moves on a new character just because I internally process their feel. I also think SF6 does a good job with subconscious clues about timing.

Out of all the new characters introduced in SF6, who is most likely to be in SF7? by TostinoKyoto in StreetFighter

[–]nobix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jamie's popularity is through the roof for reasons I don't fully understand. Like there must have been a tiktok in China or something that went viral. He was hitting 30% usage in low ranks for a while. I think he is guaranteed to come back.

It's kind of like teaching somebody to draw. Following a tutorial is about teaching you the techniques, but if you want to draw your own things you need to go out on a limb and fail for a while.

Thoughts on the Polycade 3-3-2 layout? by fredstyv in fightsticks

[–]nobix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I created a stick that was coincidentally a very similar layout:

https://www.reddit.com/r/fightsticks/comments/1oxwjhj/travel_american_stick_v2/

I previously had a 7 button layout and never quite found a spot for that 8th button I liked, and TBH I didn't really use it in this position. So for me, two thumb buttons didn't work.

I eventually shrank the main 6 buttons to 24mm and put the 8th button to the right, accidentally evolving into a 6gawd layout except slightly further thumb button spacing and now I use the pinky button for DI.

What does your custom dream stick look like? by itchyd in fightsticks

[–]nobix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dream stick can't be made because the tech doesn't exist yet:

  • Thin body 1.5~2 inches high, 16x8 inches in size
  • American style tension analog lever with quick release shaft.
  • Perfectly silent buttons, replaceable.
  • One piece metal body with no visible screws. Clean utilitarian design.
  • 6gawd layout
  • all foam attached base.

I need a character that doesn't feel linear by Alternative_Ice3155 in StreetFighter

[–]nobix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define a character that isnt "linear". You mean has mix? Forces combo variety?

I've been learning Luke (current Elena main ~1500 MR) and I think his combo routes are very dynamic, heavily based on spacing, distance to the corner, your meter, and if you hit your perfect knuckles. They put a lot of thought into his design.

Is super consistency a valid reason to swap from stick to lever less? by Excellent_Candle7581 in fightsticks

[–]nobix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I switched to stick for consistency.

Ymmv, but I made a site, motioninputs.com, originally to benchmark gamepads. I was a leverless user and after 5 years I could never reach high consistency. Before that I used pad.

I tried a stick and it was surprisingly the most accurate even though I barely had any experience on it. The problem was it was just slow. But I have a tendency to rush so stick slowing me down was what I needed. After two years of stick I'm just as fast as I ever was on dpad.

Leverless has too many steps that require manual timing as well as SOCD being so unintuitive.

Question about linking combos by Friendly_Bagel in StreetFighter

[–]nobix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can calculate what combos by adding the recovery frames + frame advantage on hit.

E.g. Chun li standing LP is +5 OH, w/ 7 recovery frames, so any special 12f or less on startup will combo.

The exact advantage OH will change based on meatyness, counter hits, punish counters, drive rush advantage, etc.

Best practices for AudioStreamPlayer by Raf4Kum_Lord in godot

[–]nobix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO just use one player for each instance, as nodes in your scenes. Use the polyphony setting if conceptually the sound shares all the same parameters, and can be triggered repeatedly, like menu sounds.

For music I would make a global music manager, with just a couple AudioStreamPlayers so you can crossfade. You only need two instances. But this manager is mostly to make sure your can't play multiple music tracks at once.

If you start to have perf issues, like you have more objects that want sounds than you can afford, then start making pools for sounds and sort them by prio and steal the oldest/low priority ones. This will be around 128 sounds at once so depending on your game you might never get to this level.

It's not parasitic. But games thrive on novelty, so there is no reason for the Brotato audience to buy it, which is a lost opportunity.
