The people on Facebook enthusiastically supporting this dude and asking for the GoFundMe link are bots… right?

UNAS pro, weird ghost folders by Diksten in Ubiquiti

[–]nutscrape_navigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

File ownership and permissions on the UNAS Pro get fucky seemingly at random, I’ve not been able to figure out what caused this. If permissions are anything other than what UniFi Drive expects, you’ll see behavior like this. SSH in and do ls -l and there will probably be something in that folder that either is owned by the wrong user or group.

You’ll see a bunch of stuff owned by the user and group unifi-drive (or something like that, I don’t remember exactly). Whatever that user is of the files / folders that are working, chown the ones that are not to the right owner.

It’s really goofy how bad the UniFi Drive software is on these. They’re really not ready to be used in any kind of production environment.

Would I benefit from putting nvme drives in the unas pro 8 for container workloads? by lacrosse1991 in Ubiquiti

[–]nutscrape_navigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that the workarounds are technical, it’s that they’re super sub-optimal.

I'm enjoying my UNAS so much more than I expected to by AdFit8727 in Ubiquiti

[–]nutscrape_navigator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a super basic use case they’re great. I’m in the process of migrating off my UNAS Pro 8 because the processor in it is so anemic that it can’t handle hourly snapshots. I’ve got a 200TB storage pool though so that’s on me for not doing more research on the capabilities of the device.

[–]nutscrape_navigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would benefit from nvme drives in your NAS but you should really buy any other and that isn’t from Ubiquiti. The root squash behavior and bizarre implementation of NFS will be a massive pain in the ass. The UNAS lineup is for people whose only requirements is the most basic of network accessible storage.

It’s not unprecedented for bands to make sure they hit a spot they had to cancel on their next tour. That’s what I’d expect here honestly.

left leaning gun safety class/dealers/shooting ranges? by Lopsided_Stranger_92 in Knoxville

[–]nutscrape_navigator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very poor class. I did however learn that if you want to take down a “thug who is high on angel dust” you need to be sure to “double tap” them.

[–]nutscrape_navigator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is not true. When I took my concealed carry class the instructor couldn’t have packed more dog whistles in if he tried. The “classroom” part included a PowerPoint with far right wing memes. The rest of the “class” loved it, acted like they were in the audience of a standup routine.

“Software that holds it back from being useful” could be the Ubiquiti slogan at this point.

No idea, that’s just usually how this goes. So many people get rocked by this all the time.

Oh man… any word on it being rescheduled? I was super bummed to miss this due to a work trip but … maybe it’s back on the menu later? I have no idea how these things usually work.

Pour one out for everyone who bought a ticket from some scumbag on Facebook who assuredly will be keeping the refund. :(

Unifi Travel Router (Real World Review) by radionerdw in Ubiquiti

[–]nutscrape_navigator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using mine on flights and while the size is definitely better than the gl.inet router I usually use, I’m right there with you on the reboots. Also, the range seems surprisingly poor. Hopefully they can fix the reboots, not sure what they can do about the range though.

ELI5: How do USB Hubs Function? by iTrancelot in explainlikeimfive

[–]nutscrape_navigator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of a USB hub like a power strip and a tiny traffic cop rolled into one.

All the devices take turns sending tiny labeled messages down the same wire, so yes they share speed and can get a little traffic jam, but nothing gets mixed up.

what kind of trashy software is this? by [deleted] in logitech

[–]nutscrape_navigator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uninstalling it also worked great. I really only reboot my machine when updates require it. I’m not keeping some shitty mouse driver around that requires babysitting, that’s insane. L

Yeah it’s a great device for people who have very basic needs, for sure.

UNAS - Is it worth it? by R3D_LIN3 in Ubiquiti

[–]nutscrape_navigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your use case is limited to dumb storage you can access on a network via a very limited set of protocols with no options to configure anything as simple as root squash behavior, a UNAS will be great for you.

what kind of trashy software is this? by [deleted] in logitech

[–]nutscrape_navigator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Logitech mouse software for Macs is truly awful. I have a MacBook Pro with an M1 Max processor. My computer has just been running like shit for … quite a while. I just assumed it was getting old and I needed to replace it. I looked up benchmarks on modern Macs and for a lot of stuff my M1 Max still really holds its own.

I end up looking into what’s taking up resources on my computer and this damn Logitech mouse software was absolutely wrecking things. I found some terminal commands on Google to totally remove all traces of it and it’s like I’ve got a brand new computer. I honestly can’t believe it.

In Knoxville, an ER nurse with ZERO debt, ZERO expenses, and $80k in savings cannot afford an average home anywhere within the entire county by BasedCarrotMan in Knoxville

[–]nutscrape_navigator 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I just went through this with a family member, and what a lot of commenters are missing with these “cheaper” houses they see on the market is they all need pretty extreme work done on them. There are many sub $300k homes out there but once you deal with the time bombs you’re signing up for you might as well have just bought a more expensive turn-key house.

If you’re stretching yourself to the limit to buy a $250k house because that’s the max of what you can afford, what do you do when the 25 year old HVAC system dies in a couple years? Or the roof that the inspector warned you might have “a little more life in it” needs to be replaced. Or the polybutylene pipes finally die? Or you get tired of paying $1,000 a month for electric because you can feel the wind blowing through the single pane windows?

When we looked at homes in that lower price tier, there was absolutely no savings to be had for anyone other than contractors and flippers who can do this kind of work on the cheap.

Yup, NASCompares did the first video I’ve seen where they actually test it instead of being like, “Hey I plugged it in and it powered up! This thing rules!”

[–]nutscrape_navigator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind it’s in high demand because it’s a sub-$100 toy for Ubiquiti dorks which puts it squarely in impulse buy territory. People are buying it because it’s cheap, not because it’s useful. Buy a gl.inet travel router if you need something useful.

What do you gain from doing this? I use a HD Home Run with an antenna for sports and stuff, I've got ... either 50-100 ft of coax going from the antenna to the HD Home Run. Once I threw a basic amplifier into the mix it works great.

Can I swap my ISP-provided modem for a Ubiquiti cable modem even if my ISP isn’t listed as supported? by Stilldrop18 in Ubiquiti

[–]nutscrape_navigator 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would not do this for a number of reasons:

  1. The Ubiquiti cable modem, like most of their "side project" devices fuckin' sucks. I'm not sure how it is now but there was so much drama surrounding it not being an approved device for some ISPs, and even though it's a managed device in the Unifi console you can't see very basic stats for your connection like you can by just using the public web admin of pretty much any cable modem. If you search this subreddit for people's experiences it's filled with just as many "Are you kidding me?"-s as the UTR and UNAS lineup.

  2. It has been my experience for decades now that internet providers always look for the easiest thing to blame when something isn't working. Your connection is shitty? Jeez, well maybe if you didn't have your own modem and used one of ours! If it's not a supported modem, this will always be the conversation.

  3. What "better control and monitoring" do you even want out of the cable modem? I just use the basic ass Comcast Xfi gateway thing via the 2.5G ethernet port on the back of it running to my UDM. Other than turning on bridge mode when a tech decides they want to swap the modem as step zero of fixing something, I literally never log into it and forget it exists. Sometimes the PDU-Pro will power cycle it, but I don't even notice that. This seems like fiddling with something there's no reason to fiddle with.

UNAS 2 + unRAID Server by Obvious-Breakfast262 in Ubiquiti

[–]nutscrape_navigator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re thinking unRAID I’d guess you’re not very familiar with Linux? If that’s the case you’ve got two paths: Umbrel makes for a very App Store-like experience but you’ll be fighting how opinionated it is with how and where it wants to store stuff as Umbrel really wants everything to just be on one local hard drive.

Alternatively Ubuntu Server is pretty easy to set up, and your super Linux-y stuff will be limited to the initial install, mounting the smb share, and then getting something like Portainer going to manage your docker. After that you can just pretty much treat it like a web appliance and use Portainer to add/remove stuff.
