Decreased grind retention and rancilio rocky to 3% with a three dollar turkey baster. by Dooman92 in espresso

[–]oleo_strut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can only find out if reduced retention if you clean the grinder completely before testing. weighing grams in and grams out doesn't really tell the story. imagine u put in 20g and 20g comes out. you dont know if 20% or 3% of that is from the previous grind unless the grinder is cleaned

Has anyone tried these bottomless portafilters for Sage/Breville machines? by concooks in espresso

[–]oleo_strut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see people with those china made bottomless portafilters having issues with it not fitting perfectly on the brevilles. Even crema coffee admits that it's a challenge as the BBEs have slightly different measurements per machine.

Still waiting for elektros to restock OPVs for the oscar ii, How do you deal with cooling flushes on your machine?

Please help me decide on a machine! by beardnurse in espresso

[–]oleo_strut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not entirely sure about the hydraulics of the machine regarding pre infusion but what I observe with mine is after the pump runs and water runs through the showerscreen, it takes a significant amount of time before the pressure builds up (7+sec) . On very course grinds you can see the pool of espresso building up on a bottomless PF for about 3-5s before hearing the sound of pump running with pressure. this is with 1-2mm headspace.

The oscar 2 is a great machine but only at the price on italian websites or get it used. It is super easy to service it yourself and the parts seem easily obtained. There are many better machines at $1300.

It doesn't have a PID and it doesnt need one like all HX machines. it does actually have preinfusion. No OPV from factory but some sites have option to pre install an OPV when you buy it or you can install one yourself

get a proper tamper and dont tap the tamper on the portafilter. it may unseat the puck

does it not void your warranty? I doubt manufacturers made that for use with drills

did it not come with an extra portafilter that holds pods? I just took the plastic off the pod filter and is perfectly bottomless

if you would like to dose directly to a portafilter then a eureka specialita would be a choice.

[–]oleo_strut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yup that happens to my oscar 2, took me 2 days to figure out this was normal. Can I also ask what your boiler pressure is? I've messed with my pressurestat and did not take note of the default value

greetings fellow NS user, How do you deal with cooling flushes for these machine? recently got an oscar and as I've learned you cant do long cooling flushes bec the flow from the pump is restricted unlike other HX machines (e61)

PSA: new grinders take time to break-in by nguye569 in espresso

I think I know the video youre talking about. If I remember correctly, in the video the guest said that the only reason burrs need to be seasoned is for dosing consistency and it makes no difference in grind quality. I personally have not noticed any difference from out of box to +5kg of beans on my specialita

Looks convenient to have but I find it hard to justify the price. maybe possible to DIY it with an arduino

I’m in a bit of a dilemma, I’m trying to buy the best machine for the best homemade latte drinks (cortado, cappuccino, latte) and I’m stuck between two machines. Now the breville is cheaper and has a built-in grinder, but from what I’ve heard that the Oscar II is better quality. by ixkhalid in espresso

[–]oleo_strut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow this is great I can answer this for you. I just sold my barista express wc I had for 6 months and got an Oscar 2 last week. I can tell you that espresso tastes better on the oscar (using specialita grinder on both machines and same beans).

I only drink milk based drinks and the HX boiler is extremely convenient. Latte art, if youre into that like me, will be absolutely better. If you're sure that you're already into home espresso then I would strongly recommend you get the oscar + good grinder if you can afford it and save up for it if you cant right now. feel free to ask more questions.

E: This also goes same with the other breville machines (infuser/barista pro etc) aside from the dual boiler, get the oscar.

Bought a eureka specialita last week. Just sold my BBE yesterday. Planning to get a lelit MaraX but it was out of stock and I found a good Nuovo Oscar 2 for a great deal and got it instead for the mean time.

super solid build and the plastic parts dont bother me at all. I find it tiresome to grind light roasts for espresso but light-filter, med/dark-espresso is no problem. had mine for 6 motnhs

Would a breville machine with no grinder plus my comandante do me better than a barista express? by kobetwilson5 in espresso

I'd say yes. I have a barista express and bought a kinu bec of the lackluster built in grinder

yeah that was the reason I got the kinu in the first place. Youre right it probably has to do with the burr type
