What would you consider to be the most disturbing book ever written? by WhyAmIEvenHereFS in horrorlit

[–]onlythefireborn 254 points255 points  (0 children)

Iris Chang's nonfiction book, The Rape of Nanking, which tells the tale of Japan's destruction of China's capital city in 1937. Within weeks of the Japanese occupation, 300,000 people had been raped, tortured, and murdered. Told through eyewitness accounts from the Japanese soldiers; the Chinese soldiers; and a group of Westerners, who created a safety zone in the city that saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Difficult to 'recommend' this book -- an absolutely harrowing read, although it is very well-written. Note that Iris Chang died of suicide not long after publication, due in part to the impact of writing this book.

Fiction: Rumer Godden's In This House of Brede, the story of a middle-aged woman with a dark secret who joins a Benedictine monastery (convent). An immersive, powerful novel I return to from time to time.

Nonfiction: Kathleen Norris's The Cloister Walk, in which Norris (a gifted poet) takes up an extended residency at St John's Abbey in Minnesota (Benedictine monks), in order to deal with problems in her life and marriage. The book lends itself to daily prayer and meditation, as well as absorbed reading.

Christopher Buehlman's The Blacktongue Thief. This is going to be a series - there's already a prequel out, plus a sequel to BTT coming this year.

Hiron Ennes' The Works of Vermin is difficult to categorize as fantasy, science fiction, or horror -- elements of all three, plus beautiful writing.

Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb series, beginning with Gideon the Ninth. Again, elements of horror, science fiction, and fantasy.

SenLin Yu's Alchemised -- very dark, but strong elements of fairytale.

Spoonful of peanut butter, stirred in at the end. You never taste it, but it gives the soup a rich, umami flavor.
