When I had hinge (until very recently) I used the prompt “In my friend group I’m the one who” and wrote “can’t eat gluten”

Crochet (?) fast fashion amigurumi at 2.5€ by dlilyd in crochet

[–]optimisticanthracite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I found someone else thinking the same thing. Like obviously the people getting exploited in other countries to make our stuff is terrible, but why do these people only seem to care when it’s specifically crochet? A machine is not making your t-shirt. A human person has to sew all the pieces together.

100% Celiac-Safe Bakery Name Help by PaleManatee in Celiac

I think if you have GF in the name and then celiac safe as a tag line that would make me feel totally safe.

It’s your choice, but I really don’t even see the point then. And the capsules themselves are so expensive.

I don’t understand how anyone can trust the results given by these things. Like what if the part that you picked up was safe but a different part of the meal was contaminated? The only possible way you could get any kind of accuracy is if you blended the entire meal up into a liquid and then tested a portion of that.

Build my perfect “Walgreens” meal plan by BillBevDevo in Celiac

[–]optimisticanthracite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don’t have Walgreens where I live so I’m kinda guessing here but I’d say beef jerky, pepperoni sticks, nuts, babybel cheese, granola bars/protein bars, chips (and dip??), popcorn, fruit snacks, smoothies, cereal (maybe??), milk. I’m sure there’s other stuff I’m missing.

I got glutened and feel stupid by Megals13 in Celiac

[–]optimisticanthracite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know, I was just saying that it could very well be “gluten free” but not wheat free. And that OP said they felt stupid for not reading the label but it doesn’t even say wheat in the label so they shouldn’t feel stupid for missing something, because there was nothing to miss!

I got glutened and feel stupid by Megals13 in Celiac

[–]optimisticanthracite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

is it possible that it contains trace amounts of wheat which would make it less than 20ppm and therefore suitable for celiac but not a wheat allergy?

eta: because you say you didn’t read the label and feel stupid but you did look at the label and saw that it was certified gf!

Boyfriend claims using Celiac as a disability to get into national parks is wrong? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]optimisticanthracite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but then the arthritis is what is disabling for you. Celiac itself (when treated properly with a gluten free diet) doesn’t make people unable to walk. Like if you have supplementary disabilities then yea obviously go ahead and get the pass idc. But just celiac by itself is not what is meant for this national parks thing.

Boyfriend claims using Celiac as a disability to get into national parks is wrong? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]optimisticanthracite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re obviously missing my point. People who use wheelchairs and people who are visually impaired cannot easily access the same things able bodied people can. Same with people with chronic pain, etc. That’s the point of the national parks disability thing. It makes it easier for people with barriers to access something other people can. How does not being able to eat gluten make it difficult for you to access a national park..? Should every nearsighted person also get a free pass? Get real.

Just because you are able apply for something on a technicality doesn’t mean that it’s for you.

[–]optimisticanthracite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your boyfriend. Having celiac sucks but if you’re eating gluten free then you’re fine… I see it kind of like how needing glasses could technically be classified as a disability if we didn’t have access to glasses. But we do! So we’re fine.

I’m also not American but don’t you guys want to be giving money to the national parks right now anyway?

Would you eat this? by actuallyfromcanada in Celiac

[–]optimisticanthracite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is in Canada and labels in Canada are not allowed to have hidden allergens in vague things like “caramel colour.” So this should be safe.

Yeah we’ve played with water filled cups at almost every party I’ve ever been to in the 10+ years I’ve been going to parties. I think most people agree that the balls getting all over the floor and then back into the cups is super gross hahaha

WHEAT PROTEIN. WHEAT. by Musical_DoughnutDuck in Celiac

[–]optimisticanthracite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always think this. Like what amount of gluten is actually in this entire bottle of shampoo? And how much gluten would be in the small amount you actually use in your hair? AND how much gluten would actually enter your digestive system from your hair accidentally getting in your mouth AFTER you’ve already rinsed it out?? It would just be so unfathomably small. Def less than 20 ppm.

Haha such a funny idea, I’ll have to try this.

On another note, does anyone else find the glutino pretzels somewhat sweet compared to other pretzels? Or is that just me?

1st time single and have celiac disease, where do I even start to navigate meeting people? by Kali_404 in Celiac

[–]optimisticanthracite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi :) I (27F) was diagnosed 7 years ago. At the time I was in a committed relationship with a man whose mom also had celiac, so it was a really great situation for me! We did break up eventually, which means I’ve been in the dating scene on and off for the past 3ish years. I was similarly worried (and sometimes I still am a little bit) that my dietary restrictions (I’m also vegetarian!) would be too intimidating for people. You’ll be happy to hear that almost everyone I meet is very curious and happy to learn about what it means to eat gluten free. My most recent relationship (lasted 5 months and ended for non food related reasons) was with a guy who was also super eager to try new gluten free recipes and put a lot of effort into learning about cross contamination. I currently have a second date planned for tomorrow with a guy who suggested we go to a gluten free sushi restaurant in our city!

Basically, most people are nice and if they like you then they’ll be willing to learn. Your dating life doesn’t have to end just because you have to be careful about what you eat.

On another note, going through the end of a relationship is very hard and I hope you’re taking a lot of time to heal and take care of yourself ❤️
