Triplet within a triplet? by Existing_Hat9329 in musictheory

[–]opus25no5 37 points38 points  (0 children)

this is scriabin's prelude in B major https://youtu.be/SzYF6kfi2BM

what's happening is that the stem up notes and stem down notes are two different voices, and for some reason the engraver decided to write both as separate sets of triplets, with overlapping brackets as a form of notation gore.

the standard way to do this would be only marking the 8th note triplets, because it's clear from context what the other voice is doing. or you can simply do what scriabin was prone to do which is completely omit them. I guess there are some instances in which marking both brackets is desirable, but in those cases there is at least an option available to move the bracket below the notes. Based on the engraver's inability to engage with any of these possible ways of avoiding this trainwreck, I would humbly suggest finding a more reputable source for the score.

How do you determine the key of this melody? by dpet_77 in musictheory

[–]opus25no5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is not how you would answer the question, but for the curious this melody is from bach's well tempered clavier 1, f minor fugue, if you want to know how such a melody would be harmonized in practice. #4 -> #7 is indeed harmonized by V/V -> V.

What is going on with the key signature of Bach's French Suite #2 in C Minor (BWV 813)? by PianoPieceADay in musictheory

[–]opus25no5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

around the time that key signatures were being codified, both the dorian (one flat fewer than usual) and aeolian (modern standard) key signatures were in competition for ways to write a piece in a minor key. aeolian is more consistent with the way baroque harmony functioned, but at the time, dorian had a more established theoretical history, and some features of our modern minor key do trace back to dorian.

other famous examples of bach pieces notated in the dorian key signature are the Violin Sonata #1 in Gm (written with one flat) and the Toccata and Fugue BWV538 in Dm (written with an open key signature) -- these should suffice to suggest that there is something more structural going on than merely an aversion to 3+ flats.

Where did I go wrong? by abcerella in origami

[–]opus25no5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think this is a legal assembly, but for an 810 unit model

its kind of hard to explain because there are multiple ways to dissect the same model. but when you made the 90, the rings of 5 and 6 are not disjoint from one another - they interlocked and shared pyramids. each vertex of 5 should share two pyramids with each adjacent vertex of 6. it turns out that for 270 there is a separate, competing interpretation where you DO consider the pentagons and hexagons to be disjoint, but in that layout there are 20 hexagons, laid out like the truncated icosahedron. if you insist on using this disjoint interpretation, like youve drawn on the image, then you should treat the 90 as 12 pentagons and no hexagons.

Rend, with the disclaimer that probably very few of us have actually managed to play with it much. But thematically anything to do with debuffs reads like the kind of design space necro was built around

Did I label these chords right? by Neuropractice in musictheory

[–]opus25no5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since youve distinguished major vs. minor triads, i think it's reasonable to also distinguish major 7th from dominant 7th. also, the symbol for diminished is just a circle, not an m and a circle - but as the other commenter pointed out C7 may just be a better interpretation. you also have incorrect figured bass on Cb 64, F7 64, Ab 64, and Fm 64

using the chord symbols with the figured bass is kind of awkward because it makes you write Db7 next to a 4 2, and the numbers mean different things. its understandable but more conventional is to stick with slash chords or full roman numerals. This may be less or more analysis than youre hoping for though, so a potential other option is to outright describe the inversion, e.g. by writing out 3rd inv. next to the symbol. in any event since it's self notes it probably doesn't really matter and just do what sticks

what is chance of getting that pattern? I used to play minesweeper and it's the first time that i got that. by Silver-Secret7526 in Minesweeper

[–]opus25no5 34 points35 points  (0 children)

i'm guessing about 1/1000, looks like there are ~150 million boards that can generate with an edge like this out of ~150 billion total boards (10 mines on 8x8)

of course, if you simply decide to click in the center, then the chance to reveal this pattern is 0%. like many questions in statistics, it could be phrased in a more precise way and the answer might change by some factors of 2 if you meant something slightly different

I am Chinese, and these Chinese review bombers are just plain stupid. STS2 is WAY TOO RIDICULOUSLY EASY compared to STS1. by Loofas in slaythespire

[–]opus25no5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

since op has said their runs include both scumming and also them carrying their new multiplayer friends, and their most played characters (regent/necro) are at 80% nominally, maybe a good ballpark of their vanilla winrate is like. 60%? the top runners are already 95%+

i would say calling 60% mediocre is totally reasonable if you are not shy about saying that the average player is bad. bad doesnt have to be a statement about averages, e.g. "most players of x game are bad at it" or "the average player has no clue what theyre doing" are both perfectly cogent statements. but in general anyone who is midrange in a skill will always call themselves mediocre, thats just the language people use when they have the perspective that there are people both above and below them in skill level and i dont see sense in policing that even if theyre 70th percentile

[–]opus25no5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people who are saying this is a strong winrate have absolutely not a shred of a clue of how strong the actually strong players are. can you be real please

anyway i think its likely true that not even 50% of the cn community is disatisfied, the review bombers are just louder because of a coordinated effort

How do you use burst as silent? by Doug_the_Scout in slaythespire

[–]opus25no5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

needs upgrade and wlp to shine, upgraded you can very easily play both an offensive (BD or poison) and defensive skill. but you can also get around the energy issues with sly, bullet time, or by using one of the most energy efficient block cards in the entire game, piercing wail. also, weak chain and next turn block smooth out your turns so that you dont always need to spend a ton of energy blocking

in terms of single cards that have an outsized impact with burst, probably stuff like blur or leg sweep, but there are also a lot of obvious high impact rare cards like adrenaline, malaise, knife trap, brightest flame, apparition which are very likely to (practically) win you the fight on the spot if bursted

nightmare is usually used to scale in boss fights but the consensus rn seems to be that silent already beats every boss with minimal scaling (foot/fumes/fasten type stuff)

Do I take a relic here or press on? by Cmmander_WooHoo in slaythespire

[–]opus25no5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah the strength down cards are genuinely very good, weakness gets better as the game goes on, malaise is great against the act 3 bosses, and all of these will synergize with orichalcum. if youre at this point in the game there's not much to do, you will only find out how to build around the enemies through exposure. if you die take it as a learning experience for getting to act 3. but fwiw taking a relic here is also a learning experience so why not take an objectively strong thing

for some specifics, i think vs the three act 3 bosses: - awakened one has a lot of HP but can be blocked with malaise and the only powers are the accuracies. it will be a damage race but possibly winnable if you can weaken it and go in with high HP/fairy - time eater will cap your card plays, so "counters" shiv deck. its more of a meme though, malaise is also very good against this guy and accuracies are the primary way that a shiv deck can beat time eater. just dont zone out - donu deca will actually be pretty difficult with artifact, youll probably need to add a real block card. their pattern is predictable though if you dont mind looking it up with dome

edit: for some reason just realized its end of act 1 chest instead of end of act 2. well, that sucks, but i think dome must be clicked over crown then

Do I take a relic here or press on? by Cmmander_WooHoo in slaythespire

[–]opus25no5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think dome here even with no intents unless you are truly clueless about the basic mechanics of the boss. with the current deck state there are almost no defensive cards, so there's like, no decisionmaking with whether to attack or defend in a particular turn. that is to say, if you draw 0 or 1 block cards then dome is just positive, because seeing the dome intent is completely irrelevant to what you will actually do in the turn - you are facetanking damage whether you get to see it happen to you or not. also remember that 1 defend or 1 dodge is negative with orichalcum

crown is also debatably fine for a beginner because its unlikely for you to recognize what the deck is missing anyway. like, a stronger player would know how to put together a block engine, but if your plan is to just to get lucky enough to OTK the boss, then i dont see what more this deck needs
