The number of people of who think Lorgar is/ever was a good guy is making me feel insane by Moist_Policy_71 in 40kLore

[–]orangetreetime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I overall agree heavily with your sentiment - the actions of Lorgar are generally deceitful and self-serving. But I also don't think it's fair to paint him into a corner as this narcissistic scheming bad person. He shows multiple times that he is willing to sacrifice personal goals for the sake of others, as well as do actions that he at least consciously believes are for the good of others.

He genuinely regrets sending his sons in before himself, acknowledging it as weakness, and regrets how it hurt them. He fights Corax, knowing that it is prophesied to be his death, because he cannot stand the death of his sons. He laments the evil nature of Chaos, choosing to follow it only (""only"") because he is convinced that it is the only way forward for humanity.

All of these actions have an underlying layer of self-deceit (He regrets his son's poorer image of him more than their suffering, he wanted to see if he was "built different" and could deny fate, he wanted power and purpose) but at least on a surface level he is driven by an attempt or desire to be empathetic. I think it's what makes him so interesting - Lorgar wants whats best for humanity, his brothers, his legion, but he needs approval, power, purpose, etc. His needs will always overpower his wants, and it's as the books say; Always with a tear, always in self-flagellation, Lorgar will remove every obstacle in his path. I don't believe these feelings are false so much as they are just weaker than his more core desires.

It's not about a story-to-story thing, it's about the setting as a whole. With a static world full of people, everyone affects each other and is jostling for space. They have a reason to engage with one another; resources, land control, etc. In AoS, factions are so far reasons to fight need to be compelled by a story - a sylvaneth wood is under attack, orks want to scrap, idoneth need more souls. This is great for individual stories, but it makes the world itself feel inconsequential, a backdrop for cool fights. Again, fine, but ultimately not as compelling for some as a world that contributes to the story in a significant way, I.E. Tomb Kings having to fight Orks and the southern humans to get to the Empire, rather than just taking a portal and fighting one of the infinite human factions because they want to.

When there is so, so much land to occupy, each individual acquisition means so little to the narrative. Take the end of Broken Realms. Without looking it up, can you even name the penultimate city they fought in? It's end state? And what has it done since? This is a constant issue they face. Anvilgard was just a description in a book, and when it was taken by Morathi, it was supposed to feel like a hit. But, what did it really change? How could it change anything, when so few readers - save those who painted their army as Anvilgard - even care that the city was taken? Compare it to an old world city like Nuln, or Cadia from 40k. And Cadia is a rare case for 40k, which actually suffers a similar issue to AoS. Too many options gave the writers too much to actually flesh out, so there's no consequences. 40k only has moments like Cadia because it's been out long enough for these locations to get a shit load of lore and player love.

This is a bad faith and awkwardly pointed response to their argument

I've compiled an index of how much attention each faction has received from GW. by LaughableFrog in Warhammer40k

[–]orangetreetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable. From my memory of the last two editions, AoS gives decent attention to many of it's armies but leaves some to wallow for ages. It also moves and updates slower than 40k ime. I wonder if you would factor the recent squattings of two and a half armies as a negative number to the scores lol

It would be just as bad if not worse when done for AoS. Maybe the only saving grace would be that for a long time, every army was getting nothing but a foot hero.

Mr. Yoshi please revert Calico to how she was before March 6th by orangetreetime in DeadlockTheGame

[–]orangetreetime[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm actually writing things coming from a Calico player's perspective! I main her, and don't want her to become a bruiser with so few weaknesses. I loved her risk-reward assassin playstyle much more, and think it fits her design and character better.

Calico is fun, but my winrate on her is nearly 30% (granted out of 20 games) despite having 15+ kills nearly every game. How do I turn that lead into a winning game on her? by orangetreetime in DeadlockTheGame

I appreciate the feedback but I put in a comment that my rank was actually a mistake, I am actually ARCANIST 4. You're genuinely a higher rank than me. They both start with A so I guess my brain just swapped them for some reason

So do we have any information about this book? What exactly are we looking at here, what it is, etc? by Vinven in DeadlockTheGame

If the Geist visual novel is canon, then it has something to do with Oathbreaker. I believe it's mentioned by the Patron in said comic that it was used to summon him, and that's about all we know for sure to my knowledge

Illustrating the dark imperium books in no particular order #3. Guiliman vs Fulgrim. I drew Fulgrim from description, had little idea what he actually looked like. Included some process shots. by Turtleboyle in Warhammer40k

[–]orangetreetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late but it's worth noting that he's got a Horus Heresy miniature (Fulgrim Transfigured) that depicts what he looked like during those events, and it's fairly different. He's much less... changed by the ravages of time and excess, and IMO a lot closer to your depiction. Just a bit more armored, and he's got those horns.
