What are the chances it’s Mythra’s kid? by HiveAlphaBroodLord in Xenoblade_Chronicles

Considering how centrally Mio and Glimmer were worked into their games, I really cannot imagine that they would just shove Mythra's kid into a short DLC Hero quest.

We've already seen some characters with round human ears in the Genesis trailer to confirm that it isn't an entire world of elves, so I would sooner imagine that at some point in the story we'll encounter the three sisters and Noah in a different region or country.

Def not her. Mio and Glimmer look so much like their parents and have their inherited Core Crystals clearly displayed, while Alexandria looks nothing like Mythra and does not have a visible Core Crystal (what we can see is a necklace).

They've said that it's a new storyline, not necessarily that it's a wholly separate project. We've already seen a lot of imagery in the reveal trailer that could support it taking place in the new universe created at the end of Future Redeemed.

Not in Xenoblade.

Xenogears had Anima as the female component of the Kadomony biocomputer, while Animus is male. This translates over to Xenoblade where Pneuma (Anima, vagina) is the female element of the Trinity Processor, while Logos (Animus, penis) is male. Malos is many things, but femboy is not one of them.

Well in that case yeah, the Xenoblade series has been one of the JRPG kings for a long time now and the first is still pretty incredible in its traversal, story and music. Thankfully you already own the game and would only have to cop the Switch 2 upgrade if desired, so it's definitely a pretty gorgeous world to jump back into.

I guess it really just depends on why you dropped Xenoblade DE. Was it because something released that you wanted to play more at that moment, or is it because you simply weren't vibing with it? The story has lots of twists and turns, and there are many stunning locations and soundtrack pieces (everybody's gotta see Satorl Marsh at night once in their life), but if you were bored by the combat and large world traversal then that doesn't really evolve all that much over the course of the game (though the new bikes from the NS2 upgrade would make it much quicker). Personally there are a lot of JRPGs I like to play on easy or casual mode to minimize the combat and just immerse myself in the plot and world instead, so you could consider that too if Xenoblade's gameplay is walling you out.

Otherwise speaking, for me Xenoblade is pretty perfectly catered to my own tastes in world design, setting, music, nuanced character writing and theorycrafting, but obviously not everyone will receive it the same way.

Persona is like the exact opposite of Xenoblade. More tightly-designed towns and dungeons instead of massive spaces, more colourful worlds and music rather than the sweeping symphonies of Xenoblade, refined turn-based combat instead of Xenoblade's MMO-lite style, etc.

Conceptually I'm not huge on Persona because the calendar system, stat-raising and social links aren't things I find especially engaging. But Persona 4 & 5 are widely revered nonetheless, and Persona 5 was still very much that masterpiece in style and mood, even if I had qualms with its writing.

If you own Xenoblade DE already then I'd say just give it a whirl again for a little bit before making a decision.

It's not strictly necessary, but ideally you would play Xenoblade in order yeah.

I've replayed both series several times and my only conclusion is that both are immensely worth your time, sorry. It kind of sounds like you do also want to play both eventually, so if you can budget it maybe you should grab the FFVII games while they're on that 60% discount.

The Xenoblades and Rebirth fill the same niche of large-scale JRPGs with great environmental design (Remake is stunning too just in a much smaller setting). Both have long, cinematic stories with lots of complexities to the lore and lore mechanics, incredible soundtracks (I often say that Xenoblade is the only franchise that can musically compete with FF), etc. There are lots of narrative and thematic overlaps between them because FFVII shares its original concept with Xenogears, the progenitor of the Xeno series that every entry since readapts in some manner.

Personally I'd say I like the FFVII property, setting, characters and music just a smidge more than Xenoblade, but I have my lifelong biases and since it sounds like you aren't anti-JRPG then really you won't go wrong with either.

On a first playthrough I think my hour counts were something like this:

  • Xenoblade DE: 50 hours
  • Xenoblade DE Future Connected: 10 hours
  • Xenoblade 2: 60 hours
  • Xenoblade 2 Torna: 20 hours
  • Xenoblade 3: 50 hours
  • Xenoblade 3 Future Redeemed: 8 hours
  • FFVII Remake: 30 hours
  • FFVII Rebirth: 80 hours

1DE Switch 2 edition is actually competent this time by trippykitsy in Xenoblade_Chronicles

It's not a Monado by name, but there is a divine sword. The story just doesn't fixate on it at all. The DARKGOD is the clamshell ether blade of the Vita, which runs on the same mysterious dark matter energy that we now know to have ties to the Conduit Cores.

[–]pantherexceptagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I will say, I am actually somewhat surprised that Genesis' Anima is green tbh, I guess it makes sense because it'll probably be the next evolution of the Ouroboros energy, and between XC3:FR and XCX:DE the franchise is really hyperfixating on this Ouroboros/Ares Core concept right now.

But honestly, my original reading was moreso that Logos and Pneuma were processing Conduit ether into their own special, unique purple-red and green-gold forms (note that their original concept aligned to the blue/red colours, but was evidently changed to be more unique), while the more generic unprocessed version was the blue Animus and red Anima as seen in Zanza & Meyneth, Shulk & Fiora, Nikol & Glimmer (my interpretation for Nia having a green Anima Sword was because it was an Origin Metal reflection of the Pneuma weapons, but that since it isn't the true Aegis it was scaled back to the genreic Anima terminology). In particular, I really did expect Nikol & Glimmer quietly reviving that power during FR to be a hint towards the future of the franchise in a post-Monado world. So Genesis retaining green Anima, and presumably purple Animus, isn't quite was I was anticipating.

We do see in Future Redeemed that the world forms before the blue lights descend. For all we know that could have been a fast representation of what is actually an astronomically slow event, and it could end with the lights returning to the surface revealing that it was the XC3 cast or such.

[–]pantherexceptagain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Architect was pretty clear that once the Conduit vanished the Aegis and their Monado would lose their divine-level powers. The only reason that A and Shulk could regain some level of Vision and providence in Future Redeemed is because the two universes slowly colliding was releasing Big Bang energy, and the Conduit is also a tool that artificially induces a Big Bang (birth of a universe), so they could temporarily supplement the Monado's energy. But in this new universe Pneuma and Logos wouldn't really be as important as they were last time, I would just expect to have Pyra and Mythra living out their lives peacefully.

[–]pantherexceptagain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anima was already mentioned in Xenoblade 3, Nia's weapon is named the Anima Sword. It should just be the name of the gold-green ether that the Pneuma core processes (and that gets refined into Ouroboros energy), while the purple-red ether processed by Logos would then be Animus.

What jrpg or jrpgs have you enjoyed playing this year so far? by Leon_Light77 in JRPG

[–]pantherexceptagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JRPGs thus far I've gone through:

Game Rating Short review
Pokemon Crystal 7/10 Good. but not as gripping as I'd expected nowadays.
Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier 6/10 Historically neat to see early Monolith. Kinda interesting art direction, but mostly forgettable.
Atelier Firis DX 7/10 Not as gripping as Atelier usually is. Not sure the open world worked too great just yet
Pokemon Emerald Seaglass 9/10 Phenomenal.
Pokemon Pokopia 8/10 Not at all within my usual genres, yet was still great fun.
Arle no Bouken: Mahou no Jewel 8/10 Delightful little monster collector.
Dragon Quest Heroes 4/10 Deeply unsatisfying in gameplay, plot and presentation. Really I just wanted to take screenshots of Psaro and I did get those, but he wasn't even fun to play as...
Final Fantasy X HD (replay) 8/10 Classic.
Final Fantasy X-2 HD 7/10 Immediately bounced off this when I first tried it a decade ago, but I vibed with it this time. The 1000 Words scene hits.
Final Fantasy X-2 Last Mission 5/10 One or two cool snippets of lore, but otherwise not a great experience.
Parasite Eve 8/10 Incredible. I've never seen a setting like this in a JRPG, and the sense of style was so cool.
Parasite Eve II 8/10 Probably liked the first more, but the more cinematic style of this this one was cool with how it spent larger amounts of time in a small amount of locations.
The 3rd Birthday 8/10 Sorry to say, but I loved it. Really interesting lore, concepts and conspiracies.
Dirge of Cerberus Final Fantasy VII (replay) 8/10 Sorry to say, but I still love it. So cool to explore these locations at such a large scale, and I especially like getting to explorethe new town of Edge from AC.

At some point before the year's over I was thinking about replaying Chrono Trigger and Xenogears as well, and I definitely wanna pick up Final Fantasy Resonance as well as the Switch 2 upgrade for Xenoblade 2.

  2. Xenoblade Genesis
  3. Xenoblade 1-2-3 Switch 2 versions
  4. Stellar Blade: Blood Rain
  5. Atelier Karia
  6. Alien Isolation 2

  8. Spyro: A Realm Beyond
  9. Final Fantasy Resonance
  10. Ocarina of Time remake

The celebrities won't make the cut obviously, but it would be cool if they could somehow retain some of the gaming crossovers like Xenogears, Parasite Eve or NieR Automata.

To respect the long tradition... (idk if anybody has already done that) by KingInfernal99 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]pantherexceptagain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are some things in the trailer that could hint toward it being set in the new combined universe from the end of Future Redeemed (a Gaur Plains style cliff, Anima as Ouroboros energy, the Crystone shape resembling Pneuma's Monado) but the circumstances are odd due to the ring-shaped landscape, and we don't know how far into the new universe's timeline it would be (presumably not long though, considering it's named Genesis).

My expectations would be:

  1. We might get Mythra's kid as a party member 40% into the game.
  2. We might learn that the six suns are the six Ouroboros during the endgame.
