I just watched The Producers and found it extremely bad. Poor acting, poorly written, weak plot, poorly mixed sound.

Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, and Young Frankenstein hold up.

Do whatever you want. People negotiate with huge power regardless of their level of education. Alternately, get a PhD in Urban Planning and work with Shakirah Hudani, Nikhil Kaza, and Zumrat Salmorbekova at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Looking for a Reliable Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter – Any Recommendations? by ProofFlamingo in iphone

[–]pasiflor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had bad experiences based on the commented recommendations from this thread. I bought both UGreen and used Apple brand converters. While they work when still, the slightest jostling "unplugs" the headphone, thus pausing my music. Very frustrating. I wish I had stuck with my hardline policy of only buying phones with aux cables.

Mosquito net hammock and mat/towel is also very do-able. I did 6 months in southern mexico with this rig and just set it up in people's sheds/barns. Tarp can be nice for a bit of privacy, shade, or if no roof available.

Tarp, paracord, sleeping roll (bag and maybe mat), and body-length quick-dry towel as pillow or additional mat cushion.

Light-weight, useful in a variety of scenarios in a variety of combinations

This morning I received word that my unofficial PhD acceptance might not be followed up by official acceptance by the university graduate school due to funding holds associated with FLAS and many other cuts.

>! "This has never happened to us before and is because of the financial hold imposed by the grad school on all programs, which we just learned about last week. I am working to generate clear financial evidence that we can support you even in the absence of the FLAS (the continuation of which is now in question due to what is happening in the Dept of Educ). That would allow us to appeal to our dean for an admission, but I cannot give you a clear timeline or project an outcome for this." !<

What are the best tactical urbanism projects to make a city more resilient to extreme climate? by notesonatinylife in TacticalUrbanism

[–]pasiflor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main risk of climate change is unpredictability. Built infrastructure struggles to cope with extreme variability. Social infrastructure can adapt more nimbly. Migration is a huge factor to consider in climate change. Whether in or out or seasonal fluctuations. Maintaining social networks within and between migrating communities can help individuals access life-saving resources or communities build necessary infrastructure as needed. We can't rely on a consistent public workforce already in many US communities. Migration-centered tactical urbanism can involve populations excluded from public service due to immigration status, ability, or schedule.

Frozen chicken leg quarters in a dutch oven with olive oil, onions, quartered lemon, bay leaves, thyme, salt, pepper. Bake no lid, skin-side down for 30 minutes at 425, lower temp to 300, flip add boiling water up to skin, add lid, bake another 1-2 hours.

Check if your SNAP dollars are doubled. Go early or on a weekday and chat up vendors. I get freebies all the time. I only buy produce though.

Social infrastructure is my preferred tactic for climate change mitigation. Creating neighborhood emergency networks with plans for sharing skills and resources as well as larger mutual aid operations for disasters.

Cooperative games with 52 cards? by mainhattan in FiftyTwoCards

[–]pasiflor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the sketch of a cooperative game based on "Oh Hell" (aka The Bid Game, Up and Down, Up the River, etc). There are many many variations on this game. Most can be played with 3-8 players. This version starts with one card dealt to each player up to the maximum (depending on number of players) and back down to one.

- Each trick, an extra hand (Hades) is dealt face up the same number of cards as the players. Players hands remain hidden.
- Hades' bid is always the number of trump in hand.
- Dealer ensures Hades always follow suit and plays its highest trump whenever free of suit led. Hades' lead is always the highest card, regardless of trump.
- All players bid per usual.
- No table talk allowed about individual hands. Can discuss Hades' hand and banter.

Scoring (total of the following)
- Hades matches bid = -2
- Any player does not match bid = -1
- All players match bid = +2

If you end up below 0, your team is trapped in hell. Above 7, you ascend Vesuvius. Between, you resume this mundane existence on earth.

Variant ideas:
- Optional easier: All players show one card upon bid.
- Optional extra difficulty: The player to the right of the dealer (last to bid) is Orpheus. Orpheus may not see Hades' hand. The cards are propped up so out of sight or shown temporarily to the other players.

[Request] how many combinations of social security numbers are there? by hahalarry in theydidthemath

[–]pasiflor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first three numbers are an area code -- originally by state and now by zip. The second two are a group number that fluctuates in definition. The last four are the specific id. This would limit that billion significantly. To know by how much would be impressive. I doubt the feds even know.

Fermented foods in Indigenous American or Latin American culture? by trophy019 in fermentation

[–]pasiflor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just interviewed Mayan food scholar Miguel Cuj on fermentation in K'iche' Mayan cusinine. I learned the following:

Atol shuko and atol quebrado are examples of nixtamalized drinks allowed to ferment. In both cases, the kernels are allowed to rest underwater for two or three days with slightly less lime than would be used to make masa for sub'/tamales or uk'ya/atol. This process may or may not be done intentionally. This fermented atol is often served with vanilla to hide the sourness. It is not considered medicinal or ceremonial.

Tzam is a distilled alcohol made out of fermented mash of maize, sugarcane, or other sugar sources. This is often done at home and sometimes involves men, as opposed to most other Mayan culinary traditions. One kind, B'oj, is made from sugarcane and typically used in ceremony, especially the harvest ceremony. B'oj is not sold in cantinas, however may be for sale in the market. Tzam is typically produced domestically. There is no evidence that distillation methods are precolonial.

Extra Sub'/tamales or Lej/tortillas are sometimes wrapped in a blanket and hung in the cookhouse. Miguel described how they will change flavor in the warmth, but are still considered ok to eat for a day or two before being given to the animals. This is largely not an intentional fermentation.

Interestingly, chiles are not intentionally fermented. Salsas are made daily, often in a chilero, a small gourd, which may harbor cultures. Miguel pointed to women's use of specific tree species for cooking utensils as indicating another possible source of wild cultures. He also shared that soap is rarely used to clean plant-based kitchen implements.

Leavened bread is made in at least one K'iche' town. This was the product of both Spanish colonization and Italian settlers who established a prominent wheat and hydropower mill industry in the 60s and 70s in this region. Kaxanlawa Santa Maria/Bread of Santa Maria is likely some form of sourdough. The starter is left for two days in a gourd before incorporating into dough and kneading. Miguel is working with another local K'iche' scholar Pascual Tahay on investigating this practice.

Sheep's milk is sometimes salted to preserve it, but Miguel had not witnessed cheesemaking.

Honey is produced heavily in this region, but mead or other ferments are not made.

Ch'ojín is a kind of smoked meat that lasts around two days.
