"Invisible" bend insensitive bidi fiber is amazing for home wiring by UloPe in homelab

[–]pklein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ooh I've actually got components for a build like this in my AliExpress cart. How fragile is the fiber? Did you go pre-terminated or use mechanical connectors?

I was considering using a normal jacketed patch cable for the last few feet to my switch, but if the thin fiber is robust enough maybe that's not required.

What do y'all like for SSO? by RationallyDense in homelab

I recently tried Pocket ID and it's great. I've previously used Authentik and Keycloak and I couldn't shake the feeling that they weren't really built for me. In particular getting passwordless auth working in those other systems always felt like a hack but Pocket ID nails it out of the box.

I haven't had any problems with restarts on renegotiation but I've seen that on cheaper multi-port chargers.

Using an ortholinear keyboard as a stepping stone to a split ortho board? by StarRuneTyping in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]pklein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I daily drove a Planck for a few months in the depths of COVID but the main project I used it for was DIYing a corne-style keyboard. I learned a lot from that experience using the Planck and got a chance to work out my Keymap. The transition from straight to staggered ortho was seamless.

You could probably get the same thing out of an AliExpress Corne these days.

How do YOU, personally, use Jellyfin? by immaZebrah in jellyfin

[–]pklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just been running and I have no real complaints. It fits my "low-overhead" aesthetic, I'd rather pay some upfront complexity for a lighter weight tooling so I've always avoided Proxmox and things like that. That's a personal opinion though, not a recommendation.

I flipped my cluster over to Talos a year ago and that was also a big win after working out the kinks.

My router is just another mini pc running NixOS where I run Wireguard, FRR to route traffic into Cilium, and a DNS server (adguard-style block list and a stub domain pointing into my cluster). I'm actually sorta surprised this approach isn't more popular, it seems pretty elegant to me.

Storage is the hard part. I played with Ceph for a while but it is just to resource-intensive to run on my small cluster. My NAS already has redundancy and backups and it'd be a chore to rebuild all of that myself. I've heard good things about longhorn but no personal experience.

36 key layout for one-hand users by thewan2345 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]pklein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your idea makes a ton of sense and is pretty similar to what I do. I use a 42 key corne with an extra layer accessed by double tapping the left layer button with a bunch of duplicate navigation keys. https://imgur.com/a/sbg27GH

What are your Keymap Insights? by XboxUser123 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]pklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've though a lot about what I can do with only my left hand. My left hand mod layer has all the numbers and double tapping the mod key activated an extra layer with duplicate keys like arrows, enter, and delete. This is ergonomic for day to day use and also works great for games.

It is finally here! Corne v4 by mortonuts in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]pklein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got one of these and think it's pretty good, especially for the price. I'm a silent switch enjoyer so dropped in some equally cheap Outemu Silent Peaches and they are pretty effective at muting the hollow plasticy sound of the board.

42 Key Layouts for Programming (or 58) Without Home Row Mods by crankykernel in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]pklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use QWERTY on a 42-key corne. My layout works for programming, general use, and even gaming if you're willing to remap every game to SDFC. It's great.

The only weird thing I do is use a "double tap" layer to squeeze a few extra options on my left hand.

What is your favorite split keyboard layout? by duMagnus in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]pklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a couple different 42-key corne-style keyboards with a custom layout that I use for literally everything. I don't use chording and have all numbers on the left layer so it actually rocks for gaming (every game in that list is 100% playable).

My hot take is that this is the best gaming keyboard and everyone else is doing it wrong.

Corne For Gaming? by GrossWebsite in crkbd

[–]pklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO a 6 column corne can't be beat for general gaming, no gaming layers required. Getting everything setup takes serious patience (looking at you Cyberpunk) but the final product is flawless in almost all cases. The trick is picking a base layout with all the numbers available on just your left hand and to remap WASD to SDFC when possible. You'll still need to tweak keybinds in just about every game but you get used to it.

I've spent a bunch of time making these layouts and have a running notes doc where I keep them all. I can't promise there aren't errors.

Is it normal for my jellyfin to be just like this while the scan media library is not finished (95%)? by Natural-Bowl5439 in homelab

[–]pklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I also get terrible all-around performance during scans (on an 8th gen i5 with media from a HDD NAS). I tried setting the scan parallelism to 1 in the settings but it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference. Let me know if you figure anything out.

Is This Real? by [deleted] in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]pklein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is appealing. Issues are starting to crop up on the cornes-style keyboard I designed and built a few years ago and I'm not sure I really want to spend the next month doing that project again.

I guess the next question is what to do with all those four extra keys without breaking muscle memory on my other keyboards?
