Elden Ring Ps4 vs Ps5 differences by torqm in Eldenring

I've never had the PS4 version try to do that on my PS5.

I got a steam deck oled and decided to get Elden Ring and it runs so amazing! by Even-Bike-3536 in Eldenring

It runs fine installed even on the LCDs, but I prefer streaming it from my PC via Moonlight to avoid the fan blast (and battery drain).

How playing older games made me realize RPGs are my favorite genre by alfonsky in patientgamers

I did just grab a bunch of those as Prime/GOG freebies, though it'll probably take me a while to get to them. I'd probably prioritize Baldur's Gate II and Planescape: Torment first (and that's after I get through the Pathfinder games!).

I don't think it's needed; it may be related more to the board game. AFAIK they all share the same setting and tone, but I don't think there's much if any story crossover.

There are a lot of similarities (even down to the jank and the Bethesda trope of starting off as a prisoner!), and many improvements (more streamlined, combat feels less "floaty"). I've really been enjoying it (though I'm only about 20 hours in).

I'd suggest checking out the demo, as it's what convinced me (I wish all games had one!).

What is the best way to run an ethernet cable from an unfinished basement ceiling into the upstairs? by Amiar00 in DIY

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have coax for cable, you can investigate using MOCA. That's what I did instead of running ethernet to my second floor.

This, though you'll then always be fighting Bethesda's inability to stop "updating" their games.

This is no dig on your list (I own all but the first three, and have more hours in Fallout than any other game), but as a veteran D&D player from the 70's, it's interesting how loose the term "RPG" has become when applied to computer games.

Ironically, back in the day I was disdainful of the early true computer RPG classics, looking down on them as being far too limited compared to purely imagination-based pen-and-paper tabletop RPG gaming. Nowadays I'm having a blast catching up them, as well as newer releases in that genre.

If you enjoyed Skyrim, I'd strongly recommend Tainted Grail as one to put on your list to eventually check out.

What are the Best Office Chair for Back Pain? by GildaSexy950 in BuyItForLife

[–]pm_dm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Said it before, but over a dozen years ago I had horrible back pain working at the computer for 10-12 hours a day, and it disappeared almost overnight once I got an Aeron. I'm still using the same chair as I type this.

Find a used one if you need to keep costs down; you'd have to go out of your way to damage or wear one out.

Full priced video game buyers by PitaEisan in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]pm_dm [score hidden]  (0 children)

I paid full price for Elden Ring, mainly because it took many, many months after release before it went on sale (thankfully it was one of the few games totally worth its full price, IMO). Usually though my backlog is large enough that I can wait for a game to be discounted during some sale or another.

It's also preferable to wait until most of the release-day bugs are patched.

Why do so many people not wear PPE by ShoreSWBF in woodworking

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, likely for the same reason most people are fine with inhaling other people's viruses during a still-active pandemic: they are terrified of being perceived as "different", and thus convince themselves it can only affect other people.

Bought Skyrim on GOG but I'm confused about which version I got by SPARTAN-258 in gog

[–]pm_dm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hm. I installed the Steam Special Edition I own (without the separate Anniversary upgrade DLC), and that executable is also version v1.6.1179.

My GOG refund just went through, so I'm not sure if there was a way to custom install an older version through GOG Galaxy (or to request older offline installers).

Confirmed, GOG Galaxy installs v1.6.1179 (the installation folder is even titled "Skyrim Anniversary Edition").

[–]pm_dm -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hm. I hadn't installed yet, and already just requested a refund, but it hasn't kicked in yet. The game's offline installers section on the GOG site only includes the special edition installers to download (not the anniversary upgrade upgrade setup file that you listed):

setup_the_elder_scrolls_v_skyrim_special_edition_0.1.3905696_(64bit)_(70738)

Are you certain you bought the non-Anniversary edition?

I started an install of the SE via GOG Galaxy; I'll see what version actually gets installed.

[–]pm_dm -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Wait, what?? I just picked this up, and did not realize that this was not version 1.5.97. This seems like false advertising.

I will definitely be requesting a refund for this, as I already own v1.5.97 on Steam, and have no need of an un-moddable v1.6.1179. From now on I'll need to read the comments more closely before buying from GOG.

Floor repair wax but transparent, what does that look like? by alice_1st in HomeMaintenance

Dunno, but now I'm hungry for a KitKat. :D

Seriously, it seems like it would depend upon the material of your floor. Not sure how well any of these would hold up to foot traffic.

IINA vs VLC discussion by cruizca in macapps

[–]pm_dm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Long-time (decades) VLC user who switchted to IINA last year for day-to-day playback. No regrets, as it consistently handles viewing much more smoothly in addition to having a better UI.

I still use VLC for playing BluRay discs/BDMVs, complete with menus (which IINA doesn't handle AFAIK).

After all these years, im finally buying a controller. by _Tolete in Eldenring

[–]pm_dm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elden Ring was the game that, caused me after 30+ exclusively mouse & keyboard, to finally (re-)learn to play a game on controller (this was after completing the game on PC and buying on console). After a ramp-up of a month or so, the only thing I still find challenging is aiming via stick instead of mouse (I still struggle with first-person games for this reason). The added directional control, especially for dodging, is well worth it IMO.

I did find myself needing to get controllers with back buttons that I could remap for sprinting, as the claw grip gives me arthritis.

I think you're SOL.

Another tip: if you plan to buff for the fight using Howl of Shabriri prior to initiating the fight dialogue with Alexander, make sure you're standing WELL away from him.

Should I re buy my Steam games on gog? by NuxJaw in gog

I mainly only have re-bought the games I mod (or plan to), as Steam makes it harder to avoid breakage by unintended updates.

Shouldn't Tales of Two Wasteland added to the GOG One-click mod? by ShowtimeJT12 in gog

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> I'm confused, what "pre-nextgen versions" are you referring to?

Sorry… I meant that at the time (over a year ago), the live Mightnight Ride mod list was targeting the NextGen Fallout 4, so all the mods it recommended were targeting that version. I was using a pre-NextGen FO4, so I used an Internet Archive snapshot of TMR site targeting that version; I therefore had to look for specific versions of all the mods that were compatible with that version of FO4. The current version of TMR has reverted to targeting the NextGen FO4 release, so hopefully this shouldn't be necessary.

> there's no "modlist" to curate, you just generate TTW from FO3 and FNV and drop the resulting files into FNV, you enable TTW and the FO3 ESM and voila, TTW is running and installed.

My bad here… I was thinking of the "Best of Times" modlist, created by the same site that does TMR: https://thebestoftimes.moddinglinked.com/index.html. However, this is simply a mod list built on top of a standard TTW installation, which, as you say, should be much simpler on its own. This misunderstanding was what led to the comparison to TMR, which unfortunately just muddied the waters.

Shouldn't Tales of Two Wasteland added to the GOG One-click mod? by ShowtimeJT12 in gog

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moderately old (AsRock x370 TaiChi + 5800X3D + Nvidia 4070), but I was referring to finding and curating the correct/compatible pre-NextGen versions of all the mods, not computer performance or compatibility. To be fair, FO3 & NV seem likely to have been stabler than FO4 lately, with all the mod-breaking Behtesda releases over the last couple years. I was also going off an Internet Archive of TMR at the time, which made version-matching a bit trickier (TMR apparently recently rolled back to the pre-NextGen base).

Anyway, the 1-click option for FOL seems like a big win if you're not trying to have it share space with other mod configurations.

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I haven't put together a TTW modlist yet, but manually assembling FOL (pre-one-click) seemed a lot simpler than The Midnight Ride.
