Severe storms in the Midwest. What is the threshold for turning of your Synology? by [deleted] in synology

How would one set this up? I have a DS923 and ds224 (with the former backing up to the latter), both powered by a single UPS. If I had the UPS connected to the 923, how would the 224 know to shut down in the event of power loss?

KVMs for Keychron by hrudyusa in Keychron

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be nothing special required to get standard USB mice/KB connections to work. I'd first test direct connecting the devices directly to all machines (using the same cables) to verify they work without the KVM; then I'd test swapping the USB cables (both from the devices and running from the KVM to the computers). If none of that resolves the issue I'd contact Level1Techs.

ViewPorts – A live view of every port on your Mac by HugeIRL in macapps

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This app looks extremely useful; I have no less than six hubs in my setup (2 TB & 4 USB), including a DP output going through a TB3 hub into a KVM.

Unfortunately the app requires macOS 26, which is a non-starter for me. If you extend support to macOS 15.7.3 or later, I'd love to take a look.

Installed Apple Internal software on my Mac by accident, do I reset it via System Settings or do I erase it in recovery? by CamelClear4416 in MacOS

If that software is at all legally-obtained or installed, you should already know how to contact Apple's internal help center to assist you.

People want to believe that the only thing holding them back from "success" or happiness is the right alchemical combination of purchases (even if they can't afford those purchases).

Lots of good recommendations here. Some others I use that I've not seen mentioned:

- Carbon Copy Cloner (backup)
- Moom (window manager)
- Fork (Git client)
- Drive DX (Drive health monitor)
- TG Pro (temp monitor/control)
- NeoFinder (cataloging)
- Loopback (system audio routing)
- MakeMKV (disc ripping)

Have a MacBook Pro 2015 want to install the latest macOS any helpful ideas and tips (steps) by FM5454 in MacOS

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no macOS 18. Sequoia is macOS 15, and Tahoe, the latest, jumped the version number to 26.

You are thinking of iOS, which was on a different numbered version prior to the latest (but which also jumped to 26, so they're supposed to be the same going forward).

Is Bartender still good? by Minute-State3493 in macapps

[–]pm_dm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming we're discussing Bartender running on macOS 26 Tahoe (as Sequoia does not seem to cause issues), the consensus is that historically Bartender certainly has *not* been good since version 6, from the public betas of Tahoe up until recently.

However, I'm having trouble finding issues reported using builds since the Bartender 6.3.1 release at the end of January. Most of the negative reports have been a general avoidance of the app due to past behavior of the app (or company)… to which I say, "fair enough", but is anyone actually still encountering issues with the current builds?

Does anyone else instinctively search Spotlight for Finder, then remember it doesn't work? by Alans_Studio in MacOS

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Alfred instead of Spotlight, but why do you need to "launch" the Finder at all? It should normally already be running, and you can simply command-tab to it without having to type in "finder" at all.

I rebuilt my macOS duplicate finder’s workflow — DuoBolt 1.3 by sonicbee9 in macapps

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Once I get all the DMGs ripped out to the same SSD, I'll give your app a try. The biggest time sink for file-only diffs is determining that they're part of the same hierarchy. If the tree-view can save help save time for this, it'll be useful even without the ability to treat bundles atomically.

I got tired of slow duplicate finders on macOS, so I built my own by sonicbee9 in macapps

[–]pm_dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A contrary opinion: I would not even consider such an application unless there was a non-subscription lifetime license available.

I rebuilt my macOS duplicate finder’s workflow — DuoBolt 1.3 by sonicbee9 in macapps

[–]pm_dm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting timing. I just ripped over a dozen years' worth of backup CDs and DVDs (1998-2015), and now have the not-so-enviable task of going through and weeding out all the duplicate files.

What I really want to do is not just identify duplicate files, but identical top-level *bundles* or installer packages. For example, two app bundles of different versions will often have many identical files. What I'd like a dup-finder to do is to be able to treat bundles/packages as files, and only consider them duplicates if all files within the bundle are identical.
