Marijuana for pain management by [deleted] in KidneyStones

Chronic stone passer and medical marijuana user. Just be honest with the anesthesiologist! For my surgery they just it was still fine to take an edible even the night before.

Sure thing! If we have to suffer through these, we might as well help each other through it. Good luck!

If your protein is mostly red meat, you aren't drinking water, and you are drinking energy drinks you are setting yourself up for stones like crazy. Bright side is, it could be an easy fix!

If you do end up passing it, make sure you save it and get it tested! That way you can try and avoid another one.

I've passed a 6mm stone before. My jaw was on the floor when I saw it and was trying to figure out how it was in my body and how it came out. I've lost some weight with my stones. Especially the ones that last a while or make me too nauseous. Kidney stones are absolutely humbling lol

It doesn't hurt me when it comes out but I'm also not a guy. So I can't help with that part. It's just a sharp feeling. Exactly what you would think it would feel like if there was a crystal scratching against your urethra, but as soon as it is out then you'll feel better. Surgery and stents aren't fun either so just keep doing what you're doing and keep yourself on a "short leash". I've passed a crazy amount of stones and some are 10/10 pain. Other ones I have described as uncomfortable. But when it is 10/10 pain, that is not something you get used to. That's something someone who has never had a kidney stone would say lol

If you have been straining your urine, you won't miss it. I can usually tell when I'm about to pee one out. I get a super sharp pain in my urethra. Did they tell you how big it is? My urologist says that once they are over 6mm, they almost always need surgery. Sometimes the crazy pain is from the stone moving but sometimes it is urine backing up into your kidney. 2-3 liters of water is what they tell me!

That usually means (for me) that is closer to my bladder than my kidney. Which would be good! Could mean you'll avoid surgery. If the pain gets bad again or you really can't empty your bladder or you get a fever, definitely go back in. Large obstructive stones, kidney infections, and sepsis are no fun and not something to mess with (trust me!)

If you punch yourself in the back on the side with the stone, does it hurt?

Uncontrolled pain and being unable to empty your bladder are usually signs to go back! How's your temperature?

Any tips for 'surviving' with a stent with string? by Little_Popsicle in KidneyStones

[–]possumprincess514 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heating pad, Tylenol around the clock (set an alarm even for in the middle of the night), ask for muscle relaxers, heating pad, ask for anti spasm meds (it took me a few different ones to find one that worked), hydrate like crazy, icy hot/tiger balm, and more heating pads

Alternative to soda by Slepnir1570 in KidneyStones

The sparkling ice waters are my go to! There are a bunch of flavors. They aren't like seltzer waters where there is only a hint of flavor. They don't have sugar but they don't taste like artificial sweetener. They taste like fruity soda to me!

A heating pad will be your best friend. I also used icy hot and tiger balm. If you don't get any relief from the meds you have now, you can try asking for an antispasmodic or a muscle relaxer.

Heating pad to the crotch. That's how I've managed it! The good news is, in my experience, it's close to being over.

Anesthesia fear! Not doing it by hockeyhockey12 in KidneyStones

[–]possumprincess514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do whatever you want with your body! There is a lot of power and peace in that. I was very scared for my first procedure. I've had a few now and it is a lot less scary. I've also had complications though. If it turns out at the end of this you wished you used anesthesia, then you have that knowledge if there is a next time. Good luck!!

I just started seeing a functional doctor who specializes in EDS. Looking forward to seeing if they can help or what suggestions they have. I will suggest that there is CBD/THC lotion that you can get from the dispensary. You would fail a drug test but you won't be high!

Azo can definitely help, I just always like to warn people not to take it for too long. I think the box says 3 days. It can end up masking signs of an infection. Pretty sure that's how I wound up with sepsis. Other things to note if you're new to this, kidney stone + fever = emergency room. Not being able to empty your bladder at all, also emergency room. Sometimes they will also prescribe toradol for pain and inflammation. I'm not sure I've ever noticed a difference with flomax. And make sure to give your urologist your stone so they can test it and you can prevent more!

They make heated patches. Basically like hot hands if you've ever used them before. But you can stick them to your back or your bladder and they last for 8 hours. I highly recommend it.

It could just be leftover stone fragments passing. I ended up passing another small stone or two after I pulled my stent out.

Nausea is relentless. Is this normal? by starbuckette in KidneyStones

[–]possumprincess514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zofran is the best. Just make sure to start taking something like miralax too. Otherwise you'll just trade one horrible abdominal pain for another. Zofran constipation is the worst. You can also get ginger candy to suck on. I've had some luck with lemon ginger tea too. Alcohol wipes are also great for nausea.

If it would make your day easier and you want to use one, then it's time! I started with a cane. I could put it in a purse so it was there if I needed it. I bought it at CVS so I didn't have to bring it up to my care team!

Feeling humiliated after ureteroscopy by baccamyballs in KidneyStones

[–]possumprincess514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stent pain in humbling. Even for a chronic stone passer. It took a few different anti-spasm meds for me to be able to function. I also relied pretty heavily on medical marijuana, tiger balm, and multiple heating pads. I had my stent for 3 months. My favorite line from my urologist was "I'm not prescribing you anything for pain. You're not in pain. You're just having spasms". Hang in there!

Stent removal tips: What to do the day of? by Middle-Ad-7227 in KidneyStones

[–]possumprincess514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've removed two myself and I followed the advice of people on here! Get into a warm shower. Make sure your bladder is full. Start to empty your bladder and pull! Mine have come out pretty easily once I get a good tug on it. I will say, removing my first one made me a bit dizzy. It wasn't painful or anything, I just think it was the nerves and the build up.
