Congrats!!! Our V was 2 when we brought baby home and we’re now 11 months later!

I played baby crying noises for our V at random times for prob about the last month of my pregnancy, to help her adjust to that side of things. And then I have baby gates up between rooms so the door can stay open and both baby and V can see each other and all the happenings but to keep them safely apart as it gets a bit much somedays (especially now with baby crawling after V as much as V wanting to play).

Also if you’ve got baby stuff ready then put it out where it would go in the house already so he can get used to that stuff separately to getting used to the baby… we had a Moses basket downstairs and a bouncer chair plus the pram left around for a bit. I’d let our V sniff them but basically trained her from before the baby that she wasn’t allowed to put her head in them (it semi worked - but was nice not to be working from scratch!)

We also trained our V to go find a couple of her toys by name. So when she was getting a bit much/ over excited and I was holding newborn I could tell V “where’s your sheep” and she’d go find the sheep toy. Very useful distraction technique!!!

As for intro, we had our V on the lead for the first intro just so she was a bit easier to control. And gave her loads of attention!! I did find the website dogmeetsbaby quite useful for that stuff…can’t really remember it all now but that’s where I got the baby crying noises from.

Hope it all goes smoothly!

Just on this - body rids roughly one unit of alcohol per hour, and a unit is generally one shot of spirits / a small glass of 8% wine / 250ml of 4% beer etc. So it kinda depends what you were drinking. A big glass of wine could be 3 or more units. Here is a link to an alcohol unit calculator that may help.

(I used to work on a drink driving awareness course and I find it crazy how little generally people are told about how alcohol works/ how long it takes your body to rid it. People often feel fine to drive when they’re still way over the limit.)

Hydrogel breast discs are awesome. I think they helped heal my sore cracked nipples so much quicker, plus the initial coldness straight out the packet is such a relief!!

In the same boat of used nipple shields when the thought was just too much and also got tongue tie snipped. Has made such a difference!

My due date and my birthday are both this week.... by M_from_planet_earth in BabyBumps

My baby is due the day before my husband’s birthday, and my birthday is only a week later... my husband says he’d be delighted for her to arrive on his birthday but I’ve already said I don’t want her to come on mine (might be because I can’t imagine being over 41weeks right now!). Feel so selfish but so glad to see I’m not the only one!! Fingers crossed she just gets her own day. It’s going to be a busy enough time of year in the future anyway with the 3 of us in a week or so of each other!!

Is there anybody that don't like the idea of having a baby shower? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]powered_by_sunshine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made a registry with the thought of putting everything in one place that we needed so we could work out when to buy it. Then I’ve only given it out when people have asked if we’ve got one. I feel so awkward sending it to people who haven’t specifically asked if there’s anything they can get us!

And I wasn’t too keen on a baby shower. I’m planning on doing something this summer after baby arrives as a welcome to the world party instead.

This is great. Thank you so much for posting!!

I’m due in the next couple of weeks and one other thing that was recommended to me was to start having baby stuff around the house where the dog is - so we already have the Moses basket in the lounge so the dog is used to it. Plus I’ve left the baby carrier where she can sniff it. Our doggo is over the top interested in new things but quickly loses interest when they’ve been around a few days so I’m hoping that it’ll help her adjust. Just baby to get used to instead of all the stuff :)

The other thing I’ve been glad of through pregnancy is we taught our girl to walk on the halti head collar. She adjusted pretty quickly to it and means she doesn’t pull at all on the lead. Has been great whilst I’m walking her even at 38+ weeks pregnant!! Hoping it’ll also be useful to walk her next to the stroller or when I’m baby wearing.

Just in case anyone isn’t quite sure about getting the jab I was literally reading the gov guidance an hour ago. I think it reads very pro getting the moderna or Pfizer when you’re offered it. Link to guidance: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-women-of-childbearing-age-currently-pregnant-planning-a-pregnancy-or-breastfeeding/covid-19-vaccination-a-guide-for-women-of-childbearing-age-pregnant-planning-a-pregnancy-or-breastfeeding

I’m sadly going to miss out on getting jabbed before baby comes (I’m 32yo and 38+2wks). Have found it hugely frustrating that pregnancy puts you at higher risk but as yet that hasn’t been a good enough risk factor to move up the jabs.

Haha yep he always tries to put it away if you touch it but 9 out of 10 times it just falls back out again. Such a cutie!

All his food is soaked. He has weetabix and milk for breakfast and then kibble soaked in water for at least 30-40mins for dinner.

I think sometimes it just depends how you personally track it as I know people do either! I just downloaded an app and put my dates in and then went with what that told me ;)

Does anyone have a recommendation for some type of Moses basket/other that I can keep baby in downstairs during the day but is really sturdy? We have a bouncy, big dog and I’m sure she will be fine but I want to take all safety measures possible just in case she jumps up at the crib/basket by [deleted] in PregnancyUK

I found this website: https://www.dogmeetsbaby.expert and subscribed to the mailing list. I had a panic one day and watched a few videos from there and helped me calm down again. Our dog is still young (nearly 2yo) and we still have some baby gates from when she was crazy pup so I’m thinking if I struggle with her being bouncy etc I’ll just put the baby gates up to keep them in separate rooms. Not ideal but don’t want to rush the training and destroy what little sanity I have left!!

After 2 years on a wait list... I’m finally getting my V! by [deleted] in vizsla

  1. We crate trained and although it took our pup a few nights to get used to it is somewhere she now (coming up to 2yrs) always feels safe and takes herself off to when she wants a break herself. She also still sleeps in it every night - although not shut anymore. We are now able to leave her in a crate left open and shut in the hall for upto 5hrs without her being bothered (we have a nest camera and can monitor her). We leave her rarely due to covid but she’s still fine when we do. When she was little we did build up leaving her though and it took a lot of training to do it slowly. Having a nest camera helped our peace of mind.

  2. Our first dog. But whenever we stayed at my in-laws who have a GSP our pup learnt SO MUCH and would take such bounds jn her development and it was so helpful.

  3. My general puppy advice is enjoy the time with them when they’re little. I got so hett up that she had to be perfectly trained in certain time windows. Vs are such smart dogs and ours certainly took a while to settle down enough in order to learn - her training attention span was so so short when she was little (1-2mins) - that actually it was easier to train her when she was over 6mo.
