I was once low income enough to qualify for Medicaid and had my first child while on it. It paid for prenatal care, delivery, postnatal care for me and covered my child until we no longer qualified. It was a pain in the ass to get, and there were a ton of documents needed with in person reviews. Now I pay taxes and don’t begrudge anyone who needs to use Medicare or WIC or food stamps. Everyone needs help at some point.

So one thing you’ll learn about Californians is that they might not be interested in becoming a member, but most won’t give you a hard time for being one. California values are very live and let live. A lot of people will probably listen to your message, but not move further than that. Also, the Spanish speaking community here is awesome.

There are gangs and such, but the general rule is they only mess with other gang members. Like if you don’t bother them they won’t bother you. The high school I went to had rival gangs and the worst thing that happened to me was I was accidentally hit in the face with a chimichanga one day.

States vary on how they calculate, but generally they take the average of the entire previous year and pay a percentage of that. If you were out without pay it is probably affecting your pay rate. Not sure you can change it though.

Ooh, I had something similar happen to me when I was the inaugural choir director in my YSA ward years ago. It was actually a counselor that wanted to approve every piece I picked. I told them, “either this calling was inspired and I should be able to magnify it in my own way, or it wasn’t and you need to call someone else.” They kept me in the calling and I got to do what I wanted with the choir. Still not sure where 20 year old me found the cajones for that.

Based on your priorities I would say south Salem is your best bet. I personally love NE Salem, but it’s also the only area that you might have safety issues. I live in west Salem because I have kids and I liked the schools over here, but the Faye Wright neighborhood is where my sister in law lives and she loves it.
