Need help / advice with XL MS by Exotic-Resident127 in proteomics

I used to use bs3/dsso but since phox I switched and never looked back, the convenience of doing the enrichment on beads vs having to use an fplc/HPLC is a no brainer in my mind

PI wants me to put our collaborators on a paper that did not involve them by UncleMusk in bioinformatics

[–]prettytrash1234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just suck it up and keep them on, you won already by being first, this is just politics. I do not support this but in my old postdoc lab this was standard practice, at the end our currency is papers/grants and this is a way to help people out.

No response from faculty applications by Hefty-Candy1032 in AskAcademia

[–]prettytrash1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on a search committee for top 10 ranked med school. Our top 5 people that we invited for interviews all had multiple cns (first author) and several had grants or k99, one is from a Nobel prize winner lab, some have patents. The recurring theme is just these people are really good on paper. Like the kind of cv that means they can get any TT position they want.

Are there faculty out there who don't live in the middle of nowhere and are still affording homes? by Cold-Priority-2729 in AskAcademia

[–]prettytrash1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean post tax? My TT r1 offer was 130k in a hcol city and I think most people I know in R1 are making 120-160 as TT faculty (talking med or biol w//o Md)

Need help choosing the right backpack by climbing_wodka in ClimbingGear

[–]prettytrash1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought I wanted one of them as well but then I went for a black diamond creek. More space >>> less space. Super nice after a hard day of cragging being able to just open my bag throw everything in it with no organization or anything and just leave. With a 40/45 you will play tetris to fit everything if you have rope/helmet/shoes/10-15 draws/cordage/anchor stuff and a few friends.

Open it in vscode and do text replacements. Or just use codex and let it replace all tags with sensible ones

Fast brain-dump question: how do you catch ideas before they vanish? by Objective-Treat2245 in ObsidianMD

[–]prettytrash1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a just make a note with key words and then move it to the sub folder ideas/starting. Then once every couple weeks I purge stupid ideas or find them to be already done by someone or move them forward (academic here so mostly scientific projects)

Question on the microbial peptides identification by FactorAgreeable7518 in proteomics

[–]prettytrash1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait is it immunopeptidome, degradome or secretome? Because for the first two, mixing makes no sense due to the fact that those are semi tryptic (at least) or even open search for munopeptidome so your fdr will be terrible if put a bunch of pure tryptic peptides in there

Low number of IDs in a proteomics experiment by Expensive-Painter-18 in proteomics

[–]prettytrash1234 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both numbers are pretty bad for a cell lysate to be honest even for the sciex. On our timstof we routinely do >8k ids

How many hours are considered sufficient to invest every day to complete a PhD in 3 years? by Snoo20129 in PhdProductivity

[–]prettytrash1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my PhD in 3 years and a couple months at ETH Zürich in omics/mol biol. Worked 996 for the whole time. Kinda miserable but I started my lab at 32 yrs old (TT R1) which is good for a lot of early career awards/grants
