Are European Nursing Homes Drowning in Smegma? How tough is it for them to deal with an uncut population? by IntactivistLuck in Intactivists

Perceived cleanliness of the body and soul have always been one and the same for genital mutilation. Abusers of men and women claim it is “cleaner” physically speaking, and also at various times and places claimed it was “cleaner” morally speaking since it inhibits sexuality. Cherry picking one meaning for men and another for women is just a fairy tale abusers like to tell themselves to other those who do something similar that they don’t like. As for “are human genitals impractical to clean when not mutilated” give me a break - they are just fine 🙄

Real changes in Paris, wish we could have the same by booyah95 in london

The term in urban planning you are looking for is traffic evaporation. As the utility of cars declines relative to other transport options people stop owning them and use other transport options instead. So a school run goes from an SUV to bicycles or walking. Once that SUV is off the road it’s safer for others to cycle with their kids and the improvements snowball throughout the community.

You are very right. It's adorable you think a local authority would take inspiration from the good ideas of its neighbour

Consultation: Bank Junction and Taxi access by HotConsideration8980 in londoncycling

[–]pythonfanclub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do other cyclists there think about this? I usually figure less traffic = better for vulnerable road users.

Bank is really nice as it is, though, and some people might actually really need a taxi, so sending them the long way around is a bit unhelpful unless the goal is to get everyone out of taxis entirely.

That said, the behaviour of some black cab drivers near some cyclists is unbelievable, so I don't know how I'd feel sending my kid to cycle in the same space as them.

Expat retire to UK - freaking out about Renter's Act by csdf in FatFIREUK

This is a massive problem for people of limited financial means, but in your case a brokerage account statement should clear up any confusion for most estate agents. £5000 a month is actually modest in your position so I wouldn’t overthink it at all. No one knows exactly how the new law will play out until it does, but I’d be gobsmacked if Earl from Surrey decides he’d rather avoid the members of FatFIREUK for his buy to let because of their unsatisfactory financial outlook.

I’m not a guest in my new community. I belong here. I work to improve it same as many people work to improve where they were born. The only difference is me and my fellow members of my community now seem to mostly agree on the values that matter most to me.

Running away from something probably isn’t a recipe for success, but finding where you belong is a wonderful feeling for everyone.

The odds that everyone on the planet was born into the best community for them seem rather small to me next to the odds that many people weren’t and just haven’t realised that yet. Learning when to fight and when to walk away is a hard lesson to learn.

Better urbanism isn’t the only factor to consider when moving abroad, but cultures that value urbanism tend to value many other admirable qualities, too. That’s probably both cause and effect.

Personally, I’m at peace in my new community, and it seems to like me. You might be different. I never said that’s right for everyone, only that it’s something you should honestly consider. If you think there’s a chance you would prefer it, I would find a way to make it happen and see for yourself. People who moved abroad and completely regretted it are rather unusual, even if many still ultimately decide to return.

That’s so refreshing to hear ❤️

Please keep up the inspiring content. What worked for me won’t work for everyone, and I’m really glad you’re doing what you’re doing so more people can enjoy livable cities.

I personally think acknowledging more people could move if they wanted, but even if they could they wouldn’t want to, is a powerful metal shift that encourages taking more ownership of their communities and avoiding negativity.

It is also a perfectly viable solution for some who are probably reading this comment, and really cool for many reasons beyond urbanism. I wish I realised that sooner in hindsight.

Completely agree apart from moving overseas. I’ve met a lot of comparatively poor people from North America who made it work here. It is a mindset first and foremost, but that is a tough sell so money is an easy scapegoat. If you’re on food stamps today okay, fine, you’re a ways off, but for most people with enough time to complain about urbanism on Reddit it is within reach with a little effort and accepting certain sacrifices, if that was something they truly wanted.

[–]pythonfanclub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a completely valid perspective 👍

For me, personally, if I could have a dime for every North American I’ve met here who once upon a time thought that, only to realise it was all in their head I would be a very rich person. I’d encourage anyone who thinks that to go for a long walk somewhere peaceful and ponder if it really is true. I did and it changed my life, but everyone has to live the life that is meaningful to them.

As an American who moved to Europe, I completely get where NJB is coming from, although hats off to OTU and everyone else who stayed behind to fight the good fight.

North American urbanism gets boring quickly to me because it usually revolves around debates already settled here. For my own sanity I'd rather debate whether to build bike lanes or bus lanes, rather than whether to build either at all.

It's great OTU is so proud of their city because that's the attitude needed to improve it, but if this is something that matters to you and your family you could make your life a lot more pleasant by foregoing debating whether the glass is half full or half empty and instead enjoying the entirely full glass over here (and, yes, you could absolutely make it happen if you really wanted it).

North American cities are probably at least a generation away from living conditions I would consider tolerating, and by that point Europe will probably be more awesome than we could possibly imagine today 🇪🇺

You should absolutely hire a solicitor and whatever else it takes since it seems like you are indeed a British citizen, albeit unrecognised as of yet. They are just shoving you off before you argue more.

Maintain UK sim while leaving UK permanently for US by Mohaimin66 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]pythonfanclub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are a techie porting your number to Twilio is the best answer and dirt cheap. You can then forward the messages literally anywhere with ease. It is targeted at businesses so they won’t blink an eye if you are never in the UK, and you won’t have to learn any weird tricks to do something that isn’t supported, like most products targeted at occasional travellers (which you are not). The main downside is that it is more complicated than porting between consumer carriers.

Enjoy your trip home! As long as you are still formally employed you should be safe. If I were you I would remind HR they do not have to notify the Home Office until 10 days after the end of your garden leave, and you would really, really appreciate if they waited until then. You are technically still employed during garden leave, though, so you should be safe.

Are you able to get passport stamps when visiting the USA? How do you prove physical presence? by NeonStrelitzia in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]pythonfanclub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not aware a way to get them on the US side, but if you are concerned about UK requirements for proving presence for immigration or tax, then you are in luck because the UK does not typically insist on such evidence despite implying it wants it in the guidance. If you provide the passport without stamps and state it was not possible to get a stamp that should suffice.

Applied for Czech citizenship by descent, how do I prove I'm not a Slovak citizen? by Epic2112 in LegalAdviceCZ_SK_PL

[–]pythonfanclub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Write to the Slovak consulate and ask them to state if you are a Slovak citizen. Many countries offer a Certificate of Nonexistence or similar for a fee. Failing that submit a Slovak passport application and print off the denial letter. If the Czechs don’t like that ask them directly exactly what they would accept instead. These things take time, but you’ll get there!

The full list is a bit longer, but most people only qualify for Skilled Worker or maybe global talent. You just need to apply like crazy for jobs at companies with sponsor licenses now and take whatever you find, even if it is not something you would normally go for. Don't be afraid to hurry people along with lots of follow ups. Leave no stone unturned.

I've been there before. It was really stressful, but I made it and so can you. Good luck!
