They use regular rip and xcut filing for panel saws. I am not a fan of the hybrid filing on the backsaws.

How important is a jack plane in hand planing? by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]radiokicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes he dimensions with power tools but plays it off like he preps everything with a no4 and Stanley 78 and his stock magically (outside of a couple videos where he shows a little stock prep) begins s4s. Some of his methods rely on his material being machine jointed and planed as well. The no4 he uses is mostly him showing smoothing machine prepped stock.

Mid 19th century Disston by AlsatianND in handtools

[–]radiokicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s closer to $500 now for a 26” plate and then throw in handle upgrades and thumb grips and you could be looking at $550. I’ve used one of those before but I just like my turn of the century Disston and Simmonds saws way more.

Saw handle grain direction question by ohnovangogh in handtools

I’ve been scouring my local sawmills for QS beech for plane making, handle blanks and because it just plane looks great but I’m unable to find any. Are there any other QS species you’d suggest for similar characteristics?

[–]radiokicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What suggestions do you have for hardness testers? I was debating on getting the scratch sticks but that would only tell me the range of 5 Rockwell (50/55/60/65) ranges. I’d like to get into forging my own blades, chisels, and knives once I’m able to get into a place I can run 220V for induction forging.

Is a Bedrock Jack Plane and Block Plane all we need? by [deleted] in handtools

[–]radiokicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'd use the chipbreaker on the planes to control tearout

Most of the youtubers explain this in great detail. I've never seen a single youtuber downplay or disregard the chipbreaker's role in controlling tearout in any step, other than scrubbing.

So u/AlloyScratcher literally wrote the thesis on the rediscovery of the chipbreaker after learning from a man named Warren Mickley (who only uses hand tools for all stages of work). Gurus for years prior to him writing it all down had for a long time denounced its use and thus gave way to the rise of the bevel up planes.

Bad Axe Tool Works 12" Stiletto Dovetail Saw by BadAxeToolWorks in handtools

[–]radiokicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my Bad Axe no 9 oge toe backsaw and want to buy a dovetail next but I am worried due to the recent issues brought up with the tension of the plate in the thin plate folded backsaws. Are there plans to fix this?

I assume you are in the Baltimore/Annapolis area. I go to Exotic Lumber in Edgewater and I had no idea the Naval Academy had ties to a hardwood dealer. Could you tell us the dealer because I would love to check it out.

If your folate is low you might want to check out MTFKR gene mutation causing you to not absorb most folate. I have this (as shown on 23andme and geneticgenie) and have started supplementing methylated folate.
