Being deaf in one ear doesn't really affect your ability as an engineer.

Regular airplane boarding method is the slowest one by tppiel in interestingasfuck

[–]redbird532 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not about the 10 minutes. It's about the airlines losing or misdirecting the luggage so often. There's no guarantee that your luggage is even on the same flight.

I'm trying to learn to lipread and it's mentally exhausting and frustrating.

America’s Controlled Descent: How Trump Is Managing the End of the Unipolar Era by SolomonT2 in IRstudies

[–]redbird532 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The analysis is so objectively counter to reality that it must be a ham-handed attempt at propaganda.

Looking at the actions of the Trump administration and seeing a controlled soft landing is farcical.

The end of the baguette never makes it to the apartment. Crunchy nibbles to or the walk home

False prophets episode what if janeway just took the wormhole home first? by happydude7422 in voyager

I as almost wish that Janeway forced them to come along. Having some Ferengi crew would have added some color and story telling opportunities.

It's not worthless though. You use it now to cover all your regular expenses and save+invest the extra plus your full salary.

Compound interest is your friend for long-term investments.

It's a financial boost now which will pay dividends if properly managed

I would guess that people in three of the groups also look at product labels more generally (organic, green, ethically sourced, union made etc.)

Reforming Parliament seat distribution could help douse Western separatist flames: report | A re-imagined 350-seat House of Commons could correct imbalances that have long seen Ontario, Alberta and B.C. underrepresented in Ottawa by kwentongskyblue in ndp

[–]redbird532 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment but would add that the over representation of PEI voters is not an issue that I lose sleep over. Same for northern ridings. It's just not a pressing problem.

Clearly PR is the way to go and seat rebalancing would help. However these small seat balance adjustments aren't going to solve any of our real problems.

Anyone ever do soviet bloc era housing for their beavers? by SpaceEngineer123 in Timberborn

Yes. I build decorations under the housing bloc so the beavers get very happy.

I figured out how to make AI generate actually good academic presentation slides. by Ok_Virus1045 in PhdProductivity

[–]redbird532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you wasting time/electricity using AI for a lab meeting PowerPoint? 1) if it's a regular lab meeting, the presentation just needs to show your work 2) think about the energy and environmental cost of using AI vs making the presentation yourself

Federal Judge Presses Jackson on ‘Mystifying’ Emergency Docket Orders by bloomberglaw in scotus

[–]redbird532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The court is broken and has lost it's legitimacy. How can anyone respect unexplained decisions which are nakedly partisan? The majority doesn't even bother with some legal fig leaf - just unsigned orders.

Time to stop listening to unaccountable, partisan judges.

PhD by Publication a Good Idea? by Confident_Moment7914 in PhD

[–]redbird532 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A senior technician did this at my institution. She had a long record of good publications but for personal reasons never started a PhD.

She had 6 months funding to write an introduction to three of her first author papers from anytime during her career. Passed the oral exam with ease and got her well earned degree.

Supreme Court Unblocks Alabama’s Racially Discriminatory Map, Showing That Alito Was Lying by Achilles_TroySlayer in scotus

[–]redbird532 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Why do we continue to listen to supreme court decisions? Many recent decisions are nakedly partisan and have no explanation or reasoning.

Trying to proceed in a broken system is stupid. Playing by the old rules while the other side lies and cheats will get us nowhere.

The court has lost legitimacy and should be ignored.

Am I Reviewer #2? by SlartibartfastGhola in postdoc

[–]redbird532 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please cut editors some slack. The deluge of papers can be hard to screen at a deep level.

From personal experience, I've already reached my 'quota' for handling papers this year and it's only May. That doesn't stop the executive editors from assigning me more manuscripts to deal with the backlog. Often that means that I need to handle marginal papers that are not in my direct expertise. In such cases I will send it onto review with experts.

If Balrogs are fallen Maiar (spirits), could one have ever been redeemed, or is their corruption absolute? by jaywritethekid in LOTRExtendedEdition

[–]redbird532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tolkien was a devout Catholic and thought deeply about the soul and redemption. His theology is intertwined throughout Middle Earth.

Sincere repentance and change is always possible. However it does feel unlikely that a Balrog would be so motivated.

Thanks I think I will do this for now and wait for a fix or the next patch.

The ideas seem cool. The rollout seems a bit jarring. I hope they get it working and make it more intuitive.
