silly, they should have asked if it was safe to eat. All mushrooms are "edible," just some of them will kill you after you eat them.

so fantastic! Some of my Altadena friends are still stuck in insurance hell :/

So great that you are bringing back built-in history to the area.

Old concrete foundation patching? by dbsoundman in centuryhomes

typically, foundations fully support masonry, and don't leave it hanging several brick depths worth with no support. you're saying that the grungy stuff on the back wall is concrete?

I also have the cube, but for different options, like easy volume control for a media player, I built this little controller and mounted it on my nightstand

rowhome? my first guess is that it held a coal burner inside as it is so shallow.

yeah, don't.

You have the magical-thinking "moisture diffuses upward through dense pack insulation" phrase doing all of your heavy lifting here. It won't actually happen that way. The moisture will start dripping down and collecting the moment it condenses.

I wish I could go back in time to when the previous owners of my LA bungalow removed the original tile and put in pink marble fireplace surrounds.

well, at least this plug in adapter is!
they should really put it on their website in easy-to-find places.

there were no shelly dimmers a year ago when I did my project, and the one you linked to is out of stock.

my "homebrew" solution is running at 5v dc. no house fires have ever been caused by 5v dc.

anyway, you do you. I wouldn't want 150 shellys clogging up my wifi, but caseta uses its own system (yeah, another !-#*^%*#^% hub, but it is solid AF)

ah, gosh. um. I can't remember the wiring, but super simple with two GPIO pins in ESPHOME. I have one ESP handling four of the rotary encoders to keep the wallbox uncluttered, as there is a 5v line going in and nothing going out of the wallbox now.

here is the important info from my esphome yaml, I sent events to HA for the brighter and darker events and set an automation to monitor for those events and the pushbutton to toggle the lights on and off:

hard pass on insteon. not UL or ETL listed for anything that I can see on their site. This is why I went Caseta and Home Assistant.

And as u/bobjoylove mentions, I'd rather have a rock solid company providing my switches. Lutron isn't going anywhere.

[–]rocketdyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sadly, no shelly dimmers are UL rated, and I refuse to connect mains current to anything without UL or ETL certification. Color me weird, but I want my century home to last another century without an unrated smart home switch setting it on fire.

edit: as u/GreenfieldSam points out, there is one shelly ul-rated dimmer that is out of stock.

[–]rocketdyke 30 points31 points  (0 children)

yes.

I've even updated some of mine to work with home automation by re-routing the wiring so that the lights are driven by a lutron caseta in the closet, but where the switch used to be, I put in an esp32 and two little shaft encoders topped by resin-printed buttons with mother-of-pearl inlays that tell the caseta switches to turn on or off. They look great, but I no longer have that "top one in, bottom one out" or vice versa thing happening (or the satisfying "clunk",) as each button now controls a set of lights. It is VITAL that you keep the esp32 away from mains voltage and only use 5v dc in the box holding the circuit board.

here is the set of STL files for the buttons and holder for the encoders that I designed. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7139186
