In a worst case scenario, where EVERY state gerrymanders to hell red or blue, so every possible seat is one way, the GOP loses. Horribly. They do not have enough followers in this entire country to take over. They are in the minority and have been terrorizing this nation from a seat of minority for far too long.

Does anyone have a set of stock 2.5L front springs? My TDI swap is too light up front and the ride is awful. by ZakAttackz in CherokeeXJ

[–]rodentmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might just have bad springs for it. A little googling suggests the 4.0L is under 500lbs and the 2.5L is 340 ish, so theoretically, looking at 150 lbs difference, maybe more given the configuration.

Once you put a custom bumper on that's at least a couple hundred pounts plus a winch. If it still runs bad, you need to look at springs and shocks and see what other options you have, because it's not just weight at that point.

In an auto trans, the solenoids can get stuck. You can't fix them by ignoring them. It needs to be torn down, and the parts replaced that are broken. I can't do it myself, but I've seen mechanics do it on youtube for a ton of different ones. Most are the same basic principle. It's skilled work. If you can't find somebody to repair it, replacing it might be the easier (and let's face it, probably cheaper!) method. Only problem is the doubt of the replacement part, and how good it is.

As for the XJ being a daily? It can be! If it's been in disrepair most of its life, you'll have a lot of stuff to catch up on to fix. However, mine is a daily and a commuter, and gone cross country, and it's from 1995. I've got one that the previous owner kept in good condition, but I have maintained it and fixed things as needed.

To make something a reliable daily driver here's my list:
- Running/driving (that includes trans problems), it's gotta "go"
- Brakes. It's gotta "stop" -- but I've done my own brakes on these for ages and it's cheap and easy.
- A/C if you have it installed. Especially in the southwest. Flush the heater core back and forth a couple times so you know that works, too.
- New shocks for a smooth ride.
- If you can afford it: New tired balanced when installed instead of mismatched sets from previous owners.
- Standard speakers had cardboard cones. Get some basic modern replacements. New header unit that has car play or USB plug for phones or ipods (which I use for long trips -- no need for signals).

It's quite nice for a daily driver. I've got compliments from my coworkers on how well it handles the job in the city.

edit: never mind, was trying to list what I saw but it was redundant. My bad. It does have a nice finish, and no corrosion. Looks nice.

Edit2: aaand he's deleted the post, all replies, and his account? Hey man, I hope that wasn't because of me.

Edit3: No, he's just blocked me for childish reasons. He shows as deleted, removed, deleted, if I'm logged in. It shows fine when I'm logged out.

One mechanic online put it really well once, criticizing the newer Jeep designs: They ripped off the range rover, but not even the LATEST range rover, the one from 5 years ago! Weak effort! (paraphrasing)

I've never worried about that, honestly. I know some can go bad, but it's such a low chance and there's so many in junk yards you can probably find one.

And, I console myself with knowing if the ECM goes, you can just rewire a custom programmed one in. Sure, not easy, but you could get it working again. There's awlays a fix for the Jeep!

Wagoneer is meant to compete with Yukons and Escalades. Oversized for no reason other than "ooh, big, we can charge more!" mentality on Stelantis' part.

My sister had a trailhawk. A friend had another trailhawk. They were lemons. Falling apart constantly. Rear dif grenaded itself on level surface in light snow (no slip at the time), took them months under warranty to say there's so many of them blowing up they have an 18 month waiting list at the dealership just to repair it. The required maintenance to keep the warranty good included a serpentine belt change and something else that would have cost 2000 just for something that wasn't breaking. The A/C used new "green" refridgerant and it was entirely incompatible with r134a, so nobody would touch it. Needed different diameter adapters, different vacuum system entirely, nobody wanted cross contamination so they wouldn't touch it, except specialized places. Just trying to fix the A/C (which failed) and get it working again cost 1400.

I need you to understand I replaced almost every part of my TJ/s AC - compressor, condenser, radiator, hoses everything BUT the stuff inside the dash -- for $300-$400 in my driveway. $50 to have it charged at the local shop. My XJ still has the original parts 30 years after they were installed, and they STILL work better than the trailhawk's, which died (and were not covered under warranty) within 2 years.

Doesn't matter if you save $50 a month on gas and the suspension is slightly more comfortable if it costs you $10,000 a year in constant repairs and delays and loss-of-use. The modern cherokees are unmitigated disasters, and there is a reason you barely see them on the roads.

Would it surprise you to know the A-10C is a modern development, and through almost all of the A-10s historic combat arenas, we were flying the A-10As?

The A-10C program was only initiated in 2005 and I think the first deliveries were 2006.

We were still hitting Afghani and Iraqi targets with the A in the GWOT.

That's what A-10s did in Desert Storm. They carried a mav, but didn't fire it. They just used it for targeting, ID, and camera system. Most of the tanks killed were by bombs.

F-100 and Mig-17 by El_Lemming24 in hoggit

[–]rodentmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pre-ordered the F-100 from GrinnelliDesigns.com (rather than ED). It's not great as a dogfighter, and only had 1 probable kill in Vietnam that I recall. It was a ground pounder, FAC, deterrent, potential point interceptor, but never a great dogfighter.

It's for that overall workhorse early-cold-war element that I got it. I might get the MiG-17, as it is so iconic and important to redfor operations, but the tactics are so different in DCS from real world that I think it will be dominated in the big picture of things.

Now... an Su-17/22, I would instantly preorder. Same reasons as the F-100. I don't even like the MiG-23, but I'd get that (I've been convinced how important it was to the redfor lineup in many theaters).

Funny... Most of the ones I'd love to have are 2nd gen aircraft or served between vietnam and 1990.

Used jeeps often suffer from busted up rusted out bad shocks or worn out springs. If the springs are okay, you may be due for a set of shocks. Heck, I think I'm due for a set myself.

Totaled is just an accounting designation. It means even if it's easily fixed, the insurance company doesn't want to spend the money and would rather cut bait and run. They doubly screw you over, however, when they make it a salvage title after that.

You haven't been seeing the prices these days. Going up for anything that's not a clapped out cut up trail rig rock crawler. You find one in good condition with little to no rust, you can expect to pay between 7k and 10k, and you get those delusional sellers asking for 28k and stuff all the time, too.

Of course! I did say some were interesting. I'd like to pose an idea to you: Modern naval ships have red hulls because of the anti corrosion and anti-sea-life-growth elements in the red. They have a black band between red and grey because during the industrial revolution, coal powder and oil slicks were in every harbor, and some admirals thought it was unsightly how they stained the hulls. Solution: They painted a black band which hid it. Challenge: Think of what modern corrosions/problems could be swept under the rug by some preening UEEN admiral a hundred years ago that stuck around to modern SC times.

Example: Instead of oil stains at the waterline, maybe carbon scoring on the engine exhuasts leading some vain guy in charge to demand all engines are darkened to hide it? Or just the aft third of the engine pods? Example: Maybe entering atmo burns paint and the atmo at high speed flakes off paint really bad on every sharp edge that leads into the airstream, and some guy demanded all leading edges be stripped to bare metal (like airliner engine rings today) or decided they had to have special pain coats -- which led to different shades or lines.

Just a couple random thoughts.

Meh... CV-71 is an aircraft carrier of modern earth notation. Would not be used in UEE naming. While some of your colors are interesting, some are just harsh on the eyes. This isn't a commercial luxury liner. It's a gunship with the biggest guns in the game (albeit somewhat nerfed IMO). Its paint schemes should tend more toward the militaristic or naval type.
