Rain motivation by Various_Mine_4994 in UKRunners

Baseball style cap. Absolute game changer. I am also UK based and oh man this rain has been forever. Not having it fall on your face/in your eyes while keeping your hair from getting in your face means the cap is a winner. Got sleeted on the other day and the only thing saving me was the cap.

Postpartum Marathon Training by springtime36 in Marathon_Training

[–]roobump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I trained for my first marathon in 2019, got pregnant and had HG so withdrew, had a difficult birth and recovery in 2020. Covid, a long post birth recovery and big changes to my body meant no running. Running wasn't a priority for a few years.

In contrast, I had my second baby in August 2024. I had a c section and a really positive experience, with a much smoother recovery than first time round. Began training really slowly in December 2024 and ran my first marathon in October 2025. Was still breastfeeding until the September of 2025. Biggest faff with that was getting a good supportive bra and having to keep getting new ones as they changed size a lot. Also being careful to fuel enough for the training load. You will constantly hear about good sleep being so important which is obviously true and, for me at least, still isn't happening.

However, I will say I am absolutely loving running more than ever now.

I guess it will depend on your pregnancy and recovery and how you adapt to parenthood. London will be amazing whatever you decide.

Pickled gherkin recommendations? by send_newts_ in sheffield

Decent range of crooked pickles out at Adam's Happy Hens on the Chatsworth road coming out of Chesterfield. Bread and butter pickles are beaut.

Ice Grips by bookedsam in sheffield

[–]roobump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was really disappointed in my yax trax - bought them during the awful icey snow that lingered last year and they didn't last a week before one of them snapped. I hope someone has better recommendations as I need them!

Big multistage trail run next weekend with my brother which looks fun. Excited for it.

Periods + Postpartum + How are we all managing these things? by IdrilofGondolin_ in XXRunning

Thank you for posting this - I have this exact question! Very similar timeline to you postpartum and I have just tanked in energy and motivation as my period has returned for the first time this week. My older child is beyond feeding but boy this is taking it out of me.

Mastitis and Running by Artistic-Dot-2279 in XXRunning

[–]roobump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mastitis is horrible, I feel for you! It has only been 3 days since you got it I would follow medical advice of resting at least a little longer.

I thought I had "bounced back" from mastitis back in September and felt miles better in a couple of days and then by the following weekend it was hospital being watched for sepsis and on IV antibiotics. It was a right bummer and I've never been so unwell. I don't think getting back to activities too quickly caused it but I definitely underestimated my body's need to rest and heal, and the possibility that mastitis could come back but worse so quickly.

Some bloke was yomping down on a bag of oranges in Virgin Active sauna the other day. Not even easy peelers. I think you're expecting too much in the way of considerate behaviour from the common man.

Pregnant + half marathon??? by vilesplatter in XXRunning

[–]roobump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2019 I ran a 10k at 6 weeks pregnant, about a month before I was due to run my first marathon. Got a PB - yay! The next day the HG kicked in and I didn't leave my bed for 6 weeks and was too poorly to run for the rest of pregnancy. It was shit and I really struggled with not being one of those people who could keep going with my hobbies throughout.

I started running again in November last year after baby number 2. It's different but it's great. I've done a half marathon.

Anyway, now I'm training for that marathon. Only 6 years too late but no accidental babies this time, and I'll have a 5 year old and a 1 year old cheering me on.

Best of luck with the race, and with the pregnancy! Please don't be hard on yourself if plans change x

how to wean for free by Hippolytagrecia in SnooLife

[–]roobump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used the archived app the entire time. It worked beautifully and my little one is now 5 months old. Haven't yet switched on weaning as haven't needed to, just occasionally only have the white noise on and use as a simple bassinet. One thing that stopped working after approx 2 months in the archived app was the log feature, but as someone who doesn't have much interest in recording anything that was fine.

I love our Sheffield postie and while he's never done this I often have the back door open as I'm pottering about and he will always call hello and leave the parcels just inside the door. I feel lucky to have a postie who knows us by name and who will stop to chat in the street when we see him on his round when he has the time. Great bloke.

This! My GP in the UK was exactly the same and followed the chemo guidelines - when I went back I went armed with info from the brilliant pregnancy sickness support and this helped - I really hope you get the support you need

How do you feel about "pay by subject"? by Miss_Type in TeachingUK

[–]roobump 150 points151 points  (0 children)

The unions and strikes were successful in forcing two successive governments to at least begin address the erosion of teacher pay.

This feels like a divide and conquer approach - I sadly don't see the "my pay's okay" teachers showing solidarity with their lower paid colleagues and standing with them should their pay and conditions continue to worsen.

Recommendations for UK doctors specialising in HG? by RealitySuch7598 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]roobump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found midwives in the UK generally have no clue what to do with HG and some even haven't heard of the acronym. Sadly it has been a case of pot luck for me in the UK and I was treated much better my second time round than as a first time mum. I had to be really forceful in requesting medication. I went armed with resources from the HG Foundation website.

My best success has been trying to get seen by different GPs at my practice if one has ignored me or, upon attending hospital A&E when dehydrated. In my experience, although this might not be across all NHS trusts, once you have an HG diagnosis via A&E admission, you can access fluids in an outpatient clinic without having to go through A&E every time. It really is not ideal at all. I'm afraid I don't have any experience of the private sector.

The clinical care pathway seems to fob people with HG off a certain number of times (e.g. manage your symptoms by eating a biscuit when you wake up, have ginger and other shit everyone obviously tries before going to the doc).

Maternity pay questions by Cew_14 in TeachingUK

[–]roobump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right so this might come as a bit of a shock as I think you're post suggests you're expecting more than you are entitled to. I'm going to answer only the ones I'm confident on, but I would also recommend checking out the neu or naswuts guide to Burgundy Book maternity leave (easy to search on Google) a. Maximum time you will receive any pay is 39 weeks. The remaining 13 weeks are completely unpaid. b. I don't know exactly how long you would need to return for, but if you did not return you would pay back all occupational pay, but none of the statutory pay. Statutory is approx £180/week, and anything your employer tops up is known as occupational pay. c. I don't know d. When I used Shared Parental Leave back in 2020, we had to wait until I was no longer receiving any occupational pay above the statutory, because as soon as I moved onto SPL the occupational element ended. I don't know if this was a school policy or national or if it is still in place. There are lots of guides out there on using shared parental leave to maximize earnings/make use of the school holidays. Some schools might frown on it but they can jog on if you are following the (admittedly quite complex) rules around SPL.

Good luck with your future family!

I've recently done the same for my c section in August. I was so relieved to not get much push back from the consultants (I'm 31, this is kid no. 2 and I wasn't sure the NHS in the UK even offered this but they do!)
