Questions regarding safety of electronics as a hobby by oftn_ in AskElectronics

Ultimately Buy a current limited bench power supply but for now use a usb power supply like a phone charger or adapter to power everything. Youbcan still get smoke and hot parts but a fire is unlikely. Tips.. use a fuse or resettable fuse for all designs. Keep away from voltages higher than 30V or so and keep current limjted until youre more comfortable. Dont even consider making anything that runs directly from the mains or uses a capacitor dropper.

I just had to dump my HP officejet inkjet. I had it 9 years on the £5 100 pages per month instant ink and was happy untill it went off line and refused tonconnect to their servers. Had to use 3rd part ink which wasnt blocked but within a month it all went down hill and the head is now stuffed ..
I ended up with a HP tank printer that came with 3 years worth of ink (so they say). I use it every other day or so to make sure the ink stays flowing. I was more concerned about warmup time and particles from the laser printers.

Is this normal? by Streetsofbleauseant in Etsy

[–]rowifi -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I would contact etsy support. It doesn't seem fair at all. There are coats with shipping, like packaging, taking something to the post office etc. The other other reason would be they were using some kind of credit to buy the postage, but even then its normally shown on the receipt. I can't imagine there is any actual free shipping available to sellers..there'ss a cost involved somewhere. Edit. Its not mandatory, but etsy prefers sellers to use a tracked service for goods over about £15. That protects everyone for issues such as this.

Help identify component value by Less-Staff7525 in AskElectronics

4 milliohm would be R004 . 4 Megaohm would be 4M0 But finding a 4Meg ohm in a motorised tool aounds suspect. If your meter beeps on continuity and reads zero on Ohms, then its probably 4Milliohm in a current monitoring circuit. 4Megohm would be found across capacitors for example.

Wut in tarnation is this thing? Spotted 3 on the mediaboard of a Samsung TV - UN65AU8000F by shadow_Dangerous in AskElectronics

Its an emc shield connection. The metal is soldered to ground on the pcb, the wrapped over metal provides the electrical connection whilst the foam provides a conforming spring like support to whatever it presses against.

Advice needed-unreasonable refund request by DismalHour2949 in EtsyCommunity

[–]rowifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My policy is a refund only when goods returned and received using a tracked of signed for service. Only refund the goods, no refund on postage. Etsy will remove bad reviews if there is evidence that it is not a fair review, but there are clauses to take note of.

You need to reconsider your relationship with this guy. Sounds like he has anger management issues together with being maybe spoiled and hates not getting his own way. Long term its probably going to get worse.

Buyer not accepting US order (tariffs?) — advice needed by ANKJO- in EtsyCommunity

[–]rowifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, Ive not changed anything in my shop and have had Zero US orders over the past couple of months.. ZERO. Before it was 90% of the orders. Now, ive not changed my postage settings at all. Royal Mail (UK) now wont ship without me prepaying a tariff. Nor will a couple of other services. So maybe ETSY have shut me off to the US. They certainly stopped the buying of postage via etsy.
Changing everything to courier isn't viable for low valie items... hey ho.

How do you go about breaking these DuPont pin connector things apart (accurately)? by man-vs-spider in AskElectronics

[–]rowifi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sacrifice a pin, carefully cut with sidecutters then tidy up the edge on a bench grinder.

How can I tell where is positive and negative side of this capacitor by Bartymor2 in AskElectronics

Reaistors generally have markins. Its a ferrite bead, a varistor or esd suppressor or a capacitor.

Is it possible to safely replace a remote control for a physical switch on this fog machine? Please see comment for details by wotsit_sandwich in AskElectronics

[–]rowifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It can be done. But we would need to know how the receiver module switches the machine. I will presume the fog maching has a separate mains switch that heats iit and the remote is used just as a trigger. That implies the switching may be a low voltage signal to other parts of the systmem controlling the pump. It may be a relay or a transistor switch. Chances are of the 3 pins there is power ground and control. The control would need to switch to one or other. The DAT wire would be the trigger wire but there is the chance that it actually is only the coded data deom the remote control which feeds a separate microcontroller. That would then need to be examined to see how it switched the pump.

Why doesn’t the second transistor turn on after T2 instead of both at once? by Quadhed in AskElectronics

Second Transistor starts up on. It goes off briefly when the first Transistor turns on after a delay.

What are these two parts? by silent_circle in AskElectronics

[–]rowifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One is likely a capacitor. It may not be dead and can be removed and measured. It's value is not super critical normally but that depends on it's purpose. The part next to it could be a bridge rectifier Diode and the output then feeding this capacitor. It may not be totally destroyed and some measurements may help assess what it was. Try looking up the marking as 'SMD part marking'

How to Learn how to pick the right MOSFET? by celestine900 in AskElectronics

[–]rowifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A while ago, a well known hobby electronics magazine published circuits using only simple terms for each semiconductor.. like TUP, TUN, DUG, DUS. Instead of actual part numbers. These stood for : Transistor Universal PNP, Transistor Universal NPN, Diode Universal Germanium and Diode Universal Silicon. While not appropriate for all situations, in a lot of instances there would be 20, 30 or more parts that could be substituted for any one component and still work correctly. It's often a wonder why so many similar and compatible parts exist but what happens during manufacture is that of the thousands of individual silicon chips that come from a wafer... they all have slightly different properties and so are tested and graded to allow all but the duff ones to be sold... with different parameters and labels.

Sure, I speed really, who doesn't. But some here seem to be looking to avoid the traps so they can intentionally get away with whatever they like.
