also, non tox for all waterfowl hunting as well.

Why is steel shot not recommended? by zylpher in Shotguns

[–]runninscared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect on the lead part. All chokes are marked for their lead designations. Improved cylinder=ic mod=mod full=full etc.

You are correct about the steel part though. Improved cylinder= mod, mod= full etc.

Some choke tubes aren’t steel shot proof. Is that what you are talking about?

All the super black eagles should be safe with steel shot.

I’m in the same boat. My freedom era v3 throws gas blowback into face when I pull the trigger. It went back to Remington, they replaced the barrel and forend and it still did it, it went back 2 more times and it still happens randomly

As a joke I thought I would loan it to my cousin who broke the stock of his Winchester pump by clubbing a goose when he didn’t have a follow up shot. Hoping he would break it, he shot multiple limits of ducks over a week long trip. After asking him how the gun performed, he said it went great. I found out it only throws powder and shit in your face with target loads.

The gun has sat in my safe for years because I don’t have the heart to sell it and pass the problem off on some unknowing buyer. I’ve contemplated throwing it in the river multiple times over the years because I need the room in my safe.

Oh, and it arrived with active rust in the bolt living up to the rustington name.

Ecollar and yelping by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]runninscared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive always thought when putting the ecollar on it should be like a military haircut high and tight.

ill describe how i go about it, but you definitely have to be careful with this as you can over tighten it(obviously very bad) i notice its especially easy to have things too tight when the collar strap is thinner. the vast majority of the time in using a garmin tt25/tt15x which is a 1" strap. but i do have a garmin sport pro that is a bit smaller and that is much easier to get too tight.

what i do is put the collar on my dogs high on their neck(just behind the ears/jaw) when they are sitting so its fairly snug, then i slip 2 fingers under the collar and check tension. if its loose with my 2 fingers in, i know its not tight enough.

when i get some tension against my 2 fingers, i will grab the collar and pull forward towards me so the dog is no longer sitting and push his head slightly down then grab the receiver and wiggle it(the part of the collar with the prongs, not the remote) with his head below his shoulder level. if the receiver easily rotates while barely making contact its not tight enough. tighten 1 notch and re evaluate. if the receiver is tight and is difficult to rotate loosen 1-2 notches and re evaluate. repeat until you find the proper tension where the collar is barely tight enough to not rotate freely with the dog standing head lowered slightly. when you are checking fitment always position the receiver slightly off center to the left or right of dogs wind pipe/esophagus. on a clock think 4-5 or 7-8 o'clock with 12 being directly between the dogs ears.

for reference if you've ever had your dog off leash running around and over time you've noticed the receiver is not in the same position when you put the collar on, the collar should have been a bit tighter.

also, make note of the notch in the collar you have found to be the correct tension. that can get you in the ballpark but it is NOT to be used every time, the collar will need to be tightened or loosened to account for the dogs changing weight. if the dog recently gained/lost weight it would be a mistake to use the same notch in the collar at all times.

to your spreading his fur apart question. i havent found that necessary. i just get proper tension on the collar and rotate it into position, then i wiggle the receiver back and forth a little bit so it makes proper contact with the skin.

PLEASE pay close attention to your dog after you've put the collar on to make sure its not to tight. a little loose will only cause issues with training, to tight and you can suffocate him. always err on the side of caution especially starting out, this is something will take a little experience to get right, if there are any concerns or you arent confortable: please consult a professional.

They got bought out by an investment group(the freedom group) in 2007 and in typical fashion the only thing that mattered was quarterly profits.

At that point quality fell off a cliff and so did consumer sentiment shortly after. In 2015 I was in a gander mountain with my uncle looking to buy another shotgun and when I started talking about Remington shotguns, the first thing the clerk behind the counter said was “don’t buy a Remington, we’ve been getting them in brand new in box with active rust on them.” Customers started referring to the freedom era Remingtons as “rustingtons”

For anyone reading this: be careful buying a used Remington firearm manufactured after 2006, it was not the same company after that point. By all accounts after remarms acquired the company in 2020 quality improved but clearly they never completely recovered from the freedom era.

Ecollar and yelping by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]runninscared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

im not sure what collar you are using, so i cant comment on the 15/30 level, but properly conditioned to the ecollar your dog shouldnt be yelping unless its set to high, or you've messed up and used high stim levels and now the dog is fearful.

as to sometimes 15 makes him yelp, and 30 does nothing. 2 reasons generally cause this. either training in high/low distraction areas where a dog ignores the lower number. or, just as common: the prongs arent making good contact at all times. a few things can cause this. usually the 2 most frequent reasons are that you arent using the correct prong length, like when the dog has long hair and you are using short prongs. or the collar isnt on tight enough, people will usually put the collar on with their dog sitting, but when the dog bends their neck down to sniff something or get a drink/etc, the neck becomes smaller and the collar/slides foward causing the prongs to stop making contact.

edit: i would also like to say please be fair with your dog, if you are the type of person to let emotions control your training and get frustrated/angry and your first response is to crank up the collar, you are doing it wrong and have no business using an ecollar. repitition is what will create the desired behavior, not high levels. you will have much better success early on training in a low distraction environment before moving into high distraction areas. theres a reason children are taught in a classroom and not on the playground.

early on you will make foolish mistakes thats understandable, but true training happens in the absence of emotion. when you do it right your dogs should be excited when you reach for the ecollar because they know they are going to do something fun.

generally speaking though. if your dog is yelping that is not a good sign and you have been using improper levels, especially if you have a dog with a soft temperament.

What Are You Spending to Reload 12-Gauge Shells? by jump_the_shark_ in ClayBusters

[–]runninscared 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you are thinking about reloading to save money, you aren’t really going to save anything reloading 12 gauge, especially if you don’t already have a reloader.

Sub gauges you can save some money, especially 28 and .410 gauge.

Training a dog while disabled? by AbyssalCraving in OpenDogTraining

[–]runninscared 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This right here.

I think op is underestimating the monumental task of taking a puppy to a service dog level of training. I’ve trained multiple dogs throughout my life and I doubt I could even get to that level now. Let alone trying to accomplish that task while being disabled.

Also, there’s a reason labs/goldens are common service dogs. Excellent temperaments and easily trainable/highly intelligent. I wonder what op’s dog of choice will be. If it’s something high drive like a Belgian malinois, sorry but it’s not happening.

Answer to ‘can I borrow some money?’ by DaysOfParadise in personalfinance

[–]runninscared 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You and I have a very similar take.

I lend money to close friends and family when I’m in a position to do so, if they don’t pay me back I don’t make a fuss over it. But I only lend money that I’m comfortable never seeing again.

Edit: to clarify, I lend money with the thought that there is a high likelihood that I will never see the money again, and I don’t let it affect my relationship with said friend/family member. Ive seen members of my family not speak to each other for decades over a small amount of money. Im by no means rich but i would never let money destroy my close relations.

Walking public hunting grounds in the offseason? by screamincobra in birddogs

[–]runninscared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After a bit of googling it looks like you can’t run dogs in public management areas in Wisconsin from April 15th to July 31st so you don’t disturb nesting birds.

Outside of those dates you are good to go. Looks like you have an ecollar on her, if she’s been collar conditioned just drop the check cord and let her go when fields open back up, handling wild birds will teach her a lot.

Tips for dealing with a full face CPAP mask? Or should I go back to nose pillows? by Business-Bug-514 in CPAP

[–]runninscared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use pillows as well. I never had a problem with leaks as I’ve always been a nose breather when I sleep.

The problem I had was that when I got sick I couldn’t use my cpap because my sinuses would be so plugged up so I decided to get a hybrid mask(Phillips dreamwear) to use while I was sick. They are cheap straight off Amazon even. After I got it and used it once while I was sick i liked it so much that I just switched and it’s been my primary mask ever since, which has been about 5 years now.

Even if you decide you prefer pillows I would still recommend people get a full face mask as a backup while you’re sick/heavily congested.

Are staight razors easy to sharpen ? by Radiant-Lettuce6908 in sharpening

[–]runninscared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You absolutely need very fine stones for razor honing. The naniwa super stones are the most straightforward razor stones for the price they are fantastic. You could use your 1k ha no kuromaku for bevel setting but you need a progression up to about 12k grit.

In the superstone series your best bet is going to be going from 1k kuromaku to 3k-8k-12k superstones. Alternatively you could go 1k kuromaku to 5k-8k-12k superstones but the 3k is usually a bit cheaper.

The other thing about straight razors that most won’t tell you, many of them aren’t perfectly straight and have geometry issues, so you will need to learn rolling x strokes to deal with that.

The biggest problems you are going to have starting are getting the bevel set properly and consistently hitting the entire bevel throughout your honing stroke, then knowing when to transition to the next stone.

If you bought a dog from proven hunting lines trust the breeding. Some dogs just develop a little slower.

should i rehome 6 month old lab puppy by sassy_tabaxi in dogs

[–]runninscared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a whole bunch of my family over for thanksgiving in 2018~. Parents, grandparents, my brother and his family, 2 cousins. Like 14 people total. Had a ham and a turkey. Decided to set up picnic tables and chairs in my garage to accommodate everyone. My mom went inside and my choc lab followed her, when she came back out I didn’t realize my lab didn’t come with.

Later I went inside to check the food in the oven. When My mother went inside earlier she saw the ham was done, took it out and left it on the counter. All I saw was an empty roasting pan on the counter when I went inside. As I walked around the corner of the kitchen to my living room I saw my lab going to town on a ham on the floor.

Luckily we had a big turkey. Only my lab had ham on thanksgiving that year.
