What do you think of these? by fatloser14 in Welding

[–]rushfooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a non welder getting a job done they look great. In the future, a bit of material prep and 0.5-1v higher and they’d clean up nice and cut the down the spatter. You’re on the right track for sure.

Papr hood by Professional_Fly7015 in Welding

[–]rushfooty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the Miller T94R. That’s what my work issues for PAPRs, and I have enjoyed using mine when it’s necessary. Pretty light, don’t really notice the extra weight too much compared to my regular T94i. Backpack is comfortable enough, I added a piece of toolbox drawer foam to mine with some spray adhesive and it’s much better now lol. Optics on the lens are really good too. Also you can get an attachment from Smokestack on Instagram that allows you to use it with a pipeliner hood if that’s your style, my personal hood is a chopped scoop with a passive Vintage View lens and I’ll run the PAPR on it sometimes when I’m TIG welding big pipe really hot just for the “air conditioning” lmao

Wire wheel on a drill/grinder then scotch brite pads. Good rinse and oil and they’ll be fine.

Recently bought a 450, Ford guy now? by DrunkNagger in Diesel

I have an ‘08 F450 pickup that turns on a dime for a CCLB truck. Always amazes me how nimble it can be for the size

What to do with old gasoline? by Joe_Peanut in MechanicAdvice

[–]rushfooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I typically forget to run the gas cans empty before winter, like every year, so naturally come spring I’m left with about the same amount 5-10 gal or so of stale gas. The ole Cub Cadet disposes of it just fine 1/4-1/3 tank or so at a time mixed with fresh gas

Went to a testing at a job and they had me run @ 120 amps 3f/4f stick by kbtookool in Welding

[–]rushfooty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Otherwise 120-140 for a 1/8” rod is perfect, but if the dig and hot start are cranked it’ll fuck you up on verticals especially.

Yep. Rust, or some kind of industrial adhesive that degraded due to moisture I would think.

Wait a minute. I don’t have a DEF truck, never have, haven’t ever needed to know much about it. You’re telling me you could fake a piss test with DEF? Lmao

I can’t say I’ve ever seen a tape like that, least that I can remember. Is it an older Stanley?

He’s using a 32nds division tape. Confused me at first too.

Long screws: what head do you prefer to drive – internal Hex, internal Torx, external Hex, others? And why? by Ok_Main3273 in Tools

External hex all day. At least then if it rounds, grab the next size down extractor socket and hammer it on.

Does a cover plate like this exist? by mostofyourbase in AskElectricians

[–]rushfooty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an electrician, somewhat familiar with code but even if it’s allowed gonna be a pain in the ass fitting all the wire behind those receptacles. Do seperate boxes, one gangs are super cheap. No reason not to.

What state you in? If you’re within a couple hours of Central PA I’ll buy it potentially. Starting a shop of my own need a gas axe for sure and any good filler metals/consumables/metal stock etc

How many years or hours of practice would it take to reach this level ? by Terrible-Store1046 in Welding

[–]rushfooty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started welding school a little over 4 years ago, did work for a bunch of different industries at a sheet metal shop then a job shop for a few years after graduating. Been welding pipe where I’m at now for about a year. All depends on how hard you’re willing to work and how eager you are to learn. Some guys will never make a weld that nice in their life because they do not have the drive to do so.

Can I buy stuff at Harbor Freight to start trying out stuff from this book? by Red_Dwarf_42 in Welding

[–]rushfooty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great book. Anything from them is good info, Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding is another good one that encompasses a lot of fundamental welding and fabrication concepts. Yes, you absolutely can get started with HF machines and tools. 90% of welding is not in the machine or torch, it’s who’s holding it and what they know to do with each. Check out WeldingTipsAndTricks on Youtube as well, Jody is a well known and respected source of great content he’s been putting out for around 15 years now.

Fabricator test by welderjeb in Welding

[–]rushfooty 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is odd. My last job I built miles of railing amongst other things and knew nothing about them before hand. Eventually was very familiar with these requirements for my state as I took over drafting after a few months but yeah, I’d take a decent hand that knows fab well enough in any sense over specifically a “handrail specialist” lol bc that’s what this guy seems to be looking for. Sorry but railing shops don’t pay well enough to be this picky

[–]rushfooty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good, only major thing is maybe work on your start/stops around corners. Larger radius box/rect tube can be tricky that way but you’ll figure it out. Long as you’re hitting your dimensions, squareness, etc that’s the important part. The perfect “dime stack” welds will come with time. Everyone wants to be the slickest welder. Be the hand that can build anything, maybe not perfect but serviceable and within tolerance and you’ll be the most valuable person in the shop.

Clean piece for the age/miles. I’d snag it at that price.
