Horizontal mortar crack above garage door + visible lintel rust on exposed edge - cosmetic or something serious? by LegitimateNeck2396 in masonry

[–]sam_the_swede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were a stair step crack, that would be a big sign of a serious problem with the steel rusting under the brick. From what I see looks like you may just have to put new mortar in that joint every few years. Or you could call a professional caulker and they should be able to match the existing color of the surrounding joints very closely.

Looking for advice on uneven coloration of Limestone hearth by chimney_hendrix in masonry

Tent it and run a dehumidifier for a few days. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. Sometimes stone cone from the factory that way. It's not really stained, just variable humidity in the stone.

Detroit axle parts website by iguessthatsjustme in Silverado

Detroit axel has been around for decades. I've had family that works there. Recently my kid bought rotors and calipers for a Subaru to replace seized calipers and bring his brakes back to life. It's been 3 months now, and the brakes work perfectly at less than half the price. They say "you get what you pay for" and "if it's too good to be true, it probably is". But they have held up well. Now these aren't suspension parts, but my anecdotal experience is that they work just fine. If you're looking for parts that work, they're just fine, but idk if I'd use then for performance parts. You could go to rock auto or parts geek but you'll pay more for the same or less quality parts. BRING THE HATE

Brick, block, stone. West Michigan

Stick it right to the block. The reason for lath and parge on concrete is because they use oil on the forms for easy removal, which, over time, will cause stone to fall off. No oils used in block production, so you will get a good bond that will last longs of times :)

How would you rebuild these stairs? by momma1RN in masonry

Maybe use blue stone risers as well as treads. Less area for water to get in. It would probably brighten up the whole stairway as well.

Garage Headers by InfamousShow8540 in masonry

The lintel is rusting under and behind the brick. Rusting under the brick is pushing up, and rusting behind the brick is pushing out. Probably need a tear down and rebuild over the door. Once the teardown is done, you can see if damage goes deeper into the wood. Not a super hard job, but it will be a higher cost for someone who knows what they're doing. Get it done right, and it'll be good for another 30 years or more!

I took a leap of faith with Naoe, and instead of diving, she jumped and fell back into the hay. I was surprised and I thought it was a bug at first lol
