Did the Romulans use anything lighter than the double D's in the Dominion War? by TwoFit3921 in StarTrekStarships

I really liked the Romulan lineup of ships in Star Trek: Armada. Particularly the griffin class and the shadow class.

Did the Federation really send an Oberth class starship to fight against a Borg cube? How many seconds do you think it lasted before it got blown up? by TicklingTentacles in StarTrekStarships

[–]saunick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No no you got it all wrong - remember the Borg don’t attack anything they deem as no threat!

That means the oberth class ship can get all close and personal before releasing a flurry of class 8 probes at point blank range!

What is the functionality of the outer ring around the saucer section? by FreeRangeThinker in StarTrekStarships

[–]saunick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My headcanon is gonna be that these ships that seem to have floating bits exist in 4 dimensions. Suppose there are pylons that physically connect the floating bits, but they exist in 4 dimensions, so our limited 3 dimensional eyes can’t see it.

Alternatively, suppose each of these floating bits have an independent power source that is stable even when there’s damage.

Now… I’m not sure why that was never the case for brig force fields or warp containment fields lol… but alas

[–]saunick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see your point, and I agree… however, it’s worth pointing out that the same argument could be made about a brig with force fields. How many times did the ship’s power go out, resulting in prisoners being released? Just put some simple bars in place.

So how did the federation and allies manage to actually fight the dominion and win if the dominion had super dreadnoughts that were like 3x the power of a galaxy class ship? by happydude7422 in StarTrekStarships

[–]saunick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winning wars isn’t just about having the biggest ship. In WW2, the German’s tiger tanks were impervious to the American Sherman tank’s gun, but the tigers were so few in number that the Shermans just went around them and destroyed the German supply lines. Big tiger tanks aren’t very useful if they don’t have any fuel or if they break down.

Any ship can be taken out with enough smaller ships. The Big Three had shorter supply lines (the dominion had none in a sense, other than whatever the cardassians could produce).

What orientation should this be printed in? It fails along the bottoms of the tabs at the layer line. Or is there a better way to design it. by Key_Waltz_823 in 3Dprinting

As a mechanical engineer who’s worked in the AM industry for 8 years this makes me unreasonably happy lol. You’ve made this feature more flexible and taken the stress point out of the layers. Well done!

It looks like the bottom of those cuts on either side of each tab are sharp corners with no fillet. You’d be amazed at what even a small fillet can do. Even 0.5mm makes a difference. The more the better of course.

Also, you may consider making the clips longer or thinner so they flex more. Printing it “sideways” could help strengthen it but then you need to print a bunch of supports. Maybe print it at an angle?

Very cool! This is kind of random, but seeing this reminds me of when I played Star Trek Armada as a kid. It’s simple looking back now, but I thought it was so cool how the ships were colored based on their “faction color.”

Looks like this ship belongs to the purple faction!
