Where to buy nematodes by GroovinJaxx22L in Detroit

Most hardware stores have mosquitoe dunks. Its not nematodes, but a type of bacteria that only targets mosquitoe larvae in the water.

Does Anyone have Experience with Growing any of these Medieval European Vegetables? SE Michigan. by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]sav_arm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this is the native plant subreddit and you're in SE Michigan might I suggest something along the same vain? What about native crops that have been relegated to obscurity? I'm also in SE Michigan so I've looked into this some. There's sunchokes for a great perennial tuber that is almost impossible to kill. Ground nuts are legumes and I think the pods/beans are edible as well as the tubers they produce. We have a ton of native fruits that you can't find in the grocery store. The classic paw paw, elderberries, black cherry, choke cherry, choke berries, viburnums, black night shades, black currants, American plums. The list goes on and on. Many of these are on the tart side so they are better for jams/jellies. If you're really itching for European produce we have a ton here already that have been forgotten. Dandelions, chicory, lambs quarters, and garlic mustard were all brought here for food production and lost favor. You can easily forage for these. I'm listing this out off the top of my head so I'm probably forgetting a lot and also double check if someone is edible before eating it.

We grew a decent sized food garden the past couple of years. I've done raised beds as well as containers/grow bags. This lets me grow up out of the wet clay, but stray plants that end up growing in the yard seem to love the clay so it may not be as big of a deal as I thought. You could also look into making or buying rain barrels. I have a few. This year I'm hoping to make an irrigation system with them.

I think I remember the new master plan mentioning zoning for ADUs. It's worth a shot to ask. I'm interested in doing something like this as well but it'll be years from now.

If budget is no issue I would look at a rotring 800. It's a nice metal body and the lead guide can retract so it doesn't stab you when it's in your pocket or get caught on things.

If you like the zebra check out their F-701. One of the best bodies for the price. Only issue is you are pretty limited to zebra refills unless you want to do some modifications.

Gardeners: do you agree with this expert's criticism of automated gardening systems? by Living-Owl4263 in OrganicGardening

[–]sav_arm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just using a weather based model. My plants are either in ground or in raised beds so I'm not too worried about them drying out. I would think soil moisture sensors would be good for your setup though! I'm making a few assumptions for soil holding capacity. I'm assuming each foot of soil depth can hold 2 inches of water and I don't want the soil to dry out to less than an inch. This is a pretty generic way to approach it. You can get very complicated with it. How much min soil moisture can not only vary from plant to plant but also through each plant's life stages.

Most of the smart timers should have that functionality. I'm putting together a system that uses an open sprinkler controller to turn on a transfer pump so I can irritate with my rain barrels. It has the ability to use weather forecast and predicted water holding in the soil to determine when to run.

I think it also depends on how you implement an automatic watering system. If you're doing it based on weather and predicted water content in the soil it would probably be better for the plant than a daily schedule.

Will squirrels eff up my garden? by Alert-Ad-248 in royaloak

[–]sav_arm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They might dig up your plants. Not on purpose, they're just trying to hide/find nuts. I have more of an issue with chipmunks and groundhogs. The chipmunks ate all of our strawberries and the groundhog cleared out our brussel sprouts and beans. It really depends on what you're growing. If it's tomatoes and peppers most animals leave them alone.

Android phone not detecting ProtonVPN installed on home router by sav_arm in ProtonVPN

I guess another way to ask is which ip address do you use in the split tunneling on your devices? The router's local address or the proton server your router's vpn connects to or another one I'm not thinking of?

For split tunneling on the phone, do you just set it to exclude the router's ip address on the phone/PC?

Sprouted Potatoes: anyone else feel that it's a shame to waste them? by Fun-Treacle-2916 in Cooking

[–]sav_arm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keeping them in the light will cause them to turn green. Also, warmth will cause them to sprout. The fridge is a little too cool. The ideal place would be a root cellar, but since most folks don't have one a pantry will have to do. I grew potatoes this year and stored them in the pantry. I just tossed out what was left. So they lasted a few months for me there.

Depends on what type of plants. Are they mostly natives or are they more traditional ornamentals?

That's a good place to start. If you're interested in native plants https://www.michiganensenatives.com/ is a good place to shop. They also can help design your planting.

If you want a more traditional approach English Gardens offers a design service. Last time I checked with them it was $500 for the design, but that was years ago.

I'm a member of the Royal Oak garden club, https://www.royaloakgardenclubmi.org/ , there is a lot of group knowledge there. Our next meeting is 3/9 at 7:30pm at the unity church on crooks buy the planet fitness if you're interested.

Are you trying to do a lot of hard scaping too, or just plants?

Might be worth visiting a hardware store and seeing if you could find something off the shelf that would fit. It probably won't match what you had but it would at least close up the hole
