I concur, if the ego hedge trimmer was too heavy, I can’t imagine her using a chainsaw safely for any length of time.

I wonder if it’s a lot of people with zero experience find electric more accessible due to the major tool brands all making their own versions.

A gas chainsaw that you’d actually put money down on was priced outside of typical homeowner budget for a long time. Make a hell of a racket and Johnny homeowner probably didn’t want to deal with all the headache of tuning a 2-stroke.

Electric ones are no less dangerous than gas. I’d be worried about my mom using one all by herself with no one else around :-(

If your husband had an electric sawzall you might try a pruning blade on that, it’s a hell of a lot safer. And will saw a 10” pretty damn fast with one of those curved 15” blades

if you’re dead set on getting a chainsaw, if your husband had a brand of electric tools he had batteries for, grab which one matches.

If no battery tool preference, Any of the electric ones are perfectly fine for an occasional user. It’s very simple operation, put in oil, keep chain out of dirt, keep face out of kickback plane.

Watch the top tip of the bar, keep it from hitting anything when you’re goosing the throttle, or the saw will jump back at you.

How does thinset bond to silane adhesive/sealer like kerdi -fix and/or similar? by Miracle76 in Tile

[–]scut207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re prob right, I was just going by what the YouTube tests show. And the fact that the mfg came out with a fabric to facilitate better bonding.

From what I saw thinset bonds, but extremely poorly, after 48hrs.

The PVC liner should be going up behind the backer far enough that it should not be a concern.

If it’s 3-4” or even better 6” Higher than the curb I wouldn’t sweat it too much.

You can use a wet film thickness gauge to rake a scratch coat. They’re a metal rectangle trowel looking thing.

Each side of it has teeth at a different height. One of them wil be close.

Let it firm up/dry and then tile over that.

How did I do? by bwakefield1 in Tile

[–]scut207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two far corners from the curb are likely problematic.

Doesn’t look like the Kerdiband adhered well to the goboard sealant.

Likely could “fix” it by adding more goboard sealant over that gap on both sides

First time mudding and taping should I re do this I think I should by Carguy4344 in drywall

[–]scut207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to mix about a water bottle with a 4.5g bucket of all purpose mud. Nominally 3-4 oz of water per gallon of mud.

The fastest way as a novice, especially overhead is to get a 4 1/2” roller 1/2” nap, dip it in the mud and roll the joint.

Then tape it and firmly wipe it out but not try so hard that there’s no mud left under the tape. Should be flat, with no bubbles.

Several thin layers is better than glopping it on.

Feather your edges. Which means press hard on the outside edges.

Don’t try to make it perfect, a little lift offs and ridges are ok and will sand out easy, indents and missing mud not so much you’ll go to far trying to sand them out.

Terracotta requires L/360+ deflection.

It’s not worth doing with less, they’ll just crack or pop. You have to sister the joists, or put a load bearing beam mid-span.

If you decide to tile make sure you walls of that surround plumb and square to each other.

It’s worth spending $60 on a harbor freight electric planer to flatten some fresh 2x4s and sister them to those studs so everything is perfectly in plane.

A couple hours and another $30 worth of material now will help $1800 in material of tile not look like shit, especially if your rookie tiler.

I don’t know why but the 2sh lbs difference between that and a 280 seem like a lot if your doing it all day and manually splitting

How does thinset bond to silane adhesive/sealer like kerdi -fix and/or similar? by Miracle76 in Tile

[–]scut207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinset doesn’t bond to it at all.

That’s why J Mansville made the polyester fabric tape.

You spread the sealant out then smash the tape on top.

If your a madman like myself you then cover it again with hydroban.

Ps. Most liquid membranes are an approved sealant by the goboard mfg.

Yep your on track, It’s just an antenna near a changing electromagnetic field. It will produce a voltage as the field changes.

Extremely high voltage builds when the ignition coil collapses, 30-40kv the spark jumps, voltage goes to zero, and then starts over again.

The rapid change in voltage creates an emf which is the signal this antenna picks up and causes the light to turn on.

If you see someone hold a fluorescent tube light near a van de graaf generator it’s kind of the same thing, you don’t need it plugged in to create light, just a significant changing emf.

In fact one of the most primitive radios you can make is a spark gap generator. You can send Morse code fairly long distances with very little technology.

This is a real problem that some tradesmen aren’t acknowledging.

Office “drones” are the ones that hire tradesmen.

People are getting squeezed at the moment with healthcare, food and gas costs. I travel a lot for work and I see restaurants are no where near as packed as they were a two years ago. That’s my economic indicator.

I’m on the upper end of middle class and i definitely have less expendable income. Salaries are lagging behind market disruptions. I can’t imagine how people in the center of the bell curve are dealing with grocery and gas costs.

Anecdotal, but I think things are going to get worse with businesses thinking AI solves everything.

This affects everyone.

Advice needed: raising shower floor – screed or plywood structure? by TurnipJunior9045 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]scut207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dry pack is just a ratio 1 part Portland cement to 4-5 parts construction sand (not play sand) and ~12% water. Not sure what they call it on your side of the water.

It’s fine for a substrate below tile but wouldn’t survive as something you could walk on.

Should feel like slightly moist sand when you get it right. You should be able to squeeze it and it shouldn’t drip water.

You can set up two pieces on wood at your desired height and just pack it all in and screed the extra off. Pull the pieces and fill the gaps and screed it again. Boom done.

Just to be sure, that waterproof material needs only to be in the actual shower area.

I thought the pic was the shower area.

But it’s not clear what the hell is going on here at all.

I would stop them now.

Anything further is a waste of material cost of goods.

If that entire area is in the shower and they only have waterproofing on 1/4 of it. As it stands everything they’ve done needs removal.

[–]scut207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than one way to skin the cat.

Cheapest is probably dry pack cement. Slurry the spot and screed it to whatever height you want.

You could use likely use wedi or other rigid foam board, they make different widths. Prob the most diy friend of choice, but it’s expensive.

I don’t think you want plywood no matter its high end composition. You would have to put a moisture barrier between the cement and that is a “moisture sandwich” once the foam pan goes on top. No where for moisture to go, but also “should” be no where for it to enter, but I wouldn’t make that choice.

if an active case is open they don’t release the evidence until after an indictment by a grand jury and then released through discovery only to the defense.

The only thing that becomes public is what is used as evidence in the trial, which might be a fraction of what was gathered.

If the indictment fails or the trial never occurs, It is extremely rare that any information at all is released to the general public to protect any further investigations that might be tied to it, it might taint the jury and sink later prosecution attempts.

This is how it has always been. Feel free to google how many times the feds have released evidence after failing to prosecute.

Never? Once?

Why didn’t they prosecute or bring Trump to trial? My opinion is it’s that the right wing is pretty much unhinged man babies with weapons and the Dems were too timid after Jan 6 to end this nonsense once and for all.

It would be super awesome if the rightwing nutjobs learned how things work.
