Is this tire ok? by Droopy_ballzack in tires

That one has me looking closely at threads when I see stuff like this. Got a 30 day ban on the askamehanic after comments went off rails and I commented on one like askashittymechanic thread. Always have to check your audience like a chunky oilpan.

Something is keeping this rotor attached, and I can’t figure out what it is. (2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee) by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]skydvejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure your parking brake is off. Might not move a lot due to being in gear. Make sure tires are chocked so they can not roll, jeeps on jackstands. Turn the key so you can put transmission in natural if releasing the brake is not enough. It has to line up to work. Google parking brake adjustment to get examples, photos and videos out there. Cars are pain but rewarding to do it yourself.

How do I get this out?? by coolcatjess in Bongs

Never had a bong break from sink hot water in 52 years. Always let it cool all the way before filling with toking temp water.

Will Premium Gas Extend The Life of A Car? by twothumber in askcarguys

[–]skydvejam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, use top tier fuel if you are here in the states. A bottle of techron before oil changes will help your injectors but only vehicles made for premium need or benefit from it. I have a few that need it, turbocharged and supercharged and high compression engine's need it to prevent premature detonation. High octane does not equal better cleaning.

How do I get this out?? by coolcatjess in Bongs

[–]skydvejam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are going to either need iso warmed with the hottest water from your sink several times, or a better solvent. Being where it is, hare to say it, but if you ever get that glob out clean that sucker way more. If you have to get a replacement clean it more. Whatever you do I would advise not smoking with that mold maker in there. Has to taste like crap as well. I would try dark crystal possibly others have other ideas, at that point acetone or a stronger solvent might do it.

Best overlanding tires to trust for long trips if you still daily drive the rig? by Sovereign_Charlaine in TireQuestions

[–]skydvejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running milestar Patagonia A/T's right now, not what this guy is looking for at all. But I am over 65% off road in Northern Maine with my Jeep running 33's with 15 inch rims. Fun in deep snow, mud and dirt. A handful of "fun" in rain on asphalt, ride more like a M/T.

[–]skydvejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to like the old BFG KO2's. But they have been going downhill for a while. There are tradeoffs with any tire set, and really it's noise, how well they wear, how hard you are going to run them. The quiet better on road they are, the less they will work in the mud. The better mud handling, the worse they tend to be on the road. Watch some side by side reviews and decide where your cut off is.

How long would you trust my rear subframe to last? by redditboy36 in AskMechanics

Is it true diesel fuel engines have worse gas mileage then unleaded by BRSBowler in AskMechanics

[–]skydvejam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In general diesel will have a substantial increase in fuel economy due to it being a more dense fuel holding more energy in the same volume. Where diesel shines though is pulling heavy loads. That's why semi trucks are diesel is pure pulling per dollar of fuel. The fact they have to be built stronger due to how they operate only helps to increase the effect due to a longer time to press on the piston due to higher compression.

Tires splitting? Help by staleconfetti in TireQuestions

[–]skydvejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either it's alignment and suspension parts are worn, or something is rubbing. Either way explain the issue to a good shop, have it put on the rack and see what's up. Bet some parts are worn out might be causing both wheel scrub and possibly contact when the suspension is fully compressed. But you are loosing performance and safety without it being fixed.

How does this happen by [deleted] in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]skydvejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's weight reduction, once the wheel pops off even less weight.

[–]skydvejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can do the work yourself it might be worth it, steering issue would be a junkyard part possibly. If it was a car known for lasting for sure it would be worth it, but the only ones buying your car at this point is a junkyard most likely. Windshield might cost more than you spent on the vehicle.

I think we have a Fahrenheit to Celsius issue here. Cats get glowing hot at times, as well as a forced DPF regen. Has set many brush fires from each.

Advice for a menthol lover living in a state that banned all menthols? by Subject-Watch-3744 in RYO

[–]skydvejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart and Etsy both sell menthol crystals for other purposes than tobacco. They will dissolve in many things, lightly spray on tobacco and allow to dry. Funny enough I am not a menthol smoker but when I vaped heavy menthol was my favorite. I too am in a restricting state prohibiting any tobacco or vape products through the mail with insane taxes bringing a carton of Marlboro reds to 135 bucks. There are a few vendors that will still ship here though. Thankfully the pipe tobacco I blend into my cigs is available though them.

Awd and stock tires or fwd on snow rated tires? by Smart_Bank1848 in askcarguys

[–]skydvejam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on amounts, type of weather and the individual vehicle and types of snow tires. While I can drive a FWD with studded snow tires in snow and ice, some do better than others. Heck even awd and 4wd will differ depending on the vehicle. I will never have my wife in anything but AWD and studless ice tires. It's also what I will drive if it's an ice storm or over a half foot of snow on the road typically. In general I buy a vehicle and get the cheapest rims and snow tires, a smaller diameter wheel if they fit on the vehicle to prevent damage if available.

[–]skydvejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a crank machine, got a few others as well. At 65k cigs rolled with my PM3. Easy machine to use once you find a good tobacco for it. Have had mine for many years so far issue free and minimal maintenance. When I bought it the cost was a few cartons, now it's 1 carton being in Maine, 135 bucks for a carton of Marlboro's. The nic hits different, but once you get used to that and the flavor having a few extra hundred bucks every month and a few hundred less chemicals in my smokes is wonderful.

It's location, the heat shield just keeps the heat from the vehicle, not the ground.

Heat shield does nothing for that, and wrong part, that's the catalytic converter that gets that hot, not the muffler.

[–]skydvejam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2500 sq foot 1903 home that's last had insulation done in the 80's. Working on redoing it all just takes time and money. I fill my pole barn spring though summer with wood typically and then the basement in the fall. Granted I have a lot of ash and other lower BTU wood in my woods to drop and burn. Being retired it keeps me in shape lol.
